In my school days, around 1967 there was a line of electronic repair and surplus shop in Leeds on Meadow lane. I don’t remember all the names but there was M&B radio tv repairs the B was Brian and I cant remember the M. They were very kind to a poor but interested schoolboy. Around the same area was a surplus photography shop selling ex defence bromide paper etc. Another shop was Mac of Morley a treasure house of ex government electronic surplus radios test gear and components. I had a casual job there for a while as a kid. More toward the city was a scientific and chemistry shop Reynolds and Brandson and in an alleyway another electronics surplus shop that had working displays of transmitters etc. i remember seeing a neon lamp light with RF for the first time there. Lots of people liked making and experimenting at that time.

As well as H.R.Electronics, there were a couple of other places in Loughborough back when I was an undergrad in 1980s/90s. One was a larger shop on Nottingham Road (Taurus ISTR) that stocked loads of random surplus stuff and the other was a small shop on a road of terraced houses up by the train station that did TV repairs but also sold second hand tellies, radios and computers.

Fantastic! There used to be a similar shop in Bolton in the 70's - can't for the life of me remember it's name. They had floor to ceiling shelves stocked with every variety of valve amd component you can think of. Long since gone sadly, trampled by progress and Bolton University buildings. I actually remember that very Practical Wireless issue - I was 16 at the time, had no money but longed for a S-Dec. Eventually I got a job as an electronics aprentice at GEC in Trafford Park - so getting hold of components for hobby projects wasn't such a problem :) Thanks for sharing this Michael - I do hope Birketts can keep going. Happy birthday Michael!!! What a treat from your friend! Reminds me of the days when I began my working life in electronics, I was regularly down in London on training courses. So when the course was finished I went straight to Edgeware rd and tottenham court road to indulge in hours of browsing in the hundreds of surplus electronics shops. It was bliss! Unfortunately my funds were very restricted so I could never buy everything I wanted. Later we moved to Yorkshire, not far from Leeds, and there was a brilliant shop there called M&B radio. Their stock was incredible, everything from Nagra portable tape recorders in mint condition, to huge component assortment bags for a £1!! Again, I never had the funds to properly indulge myself but what a place. They closed down around 20 years ago I think. I wonder if Birketts has any battery charger transformers? I want to build an automatic battery charger project in a 70s PE mag, but the tx it requires are no longer available. I'll have to get over there sometime, with plenty of time to spend!!

We used to have "the shop on the bridge" that was an Aladdin's cave like this. And des (domestic electrical supplies) that would probably have the element/inner oven glass door you needed in stock. Both sadly are very much no more. With the rise of repair cafes in the area, it's only the older folk that really recognise what we lost. Sadly it's when I remind them that they've shut down for good.

Here in the States we didn't get Practical Wireless, but we did get Radio Electronics.
@michaeldranfield71403 ай бұрын
We had quite a few publications here in the UK , most have disappeared now and Practical wireless has gone to the dogs , I stopped buying it about 10 years ago now .

I new when you sed Manchester it would be new cross i used to go there at the end of Oldham road. I didn't think there was any shops like that left.

I have so many memories of going to New cross radio as a kid , and believe it or not I still have stuff in my collection today that I bought from them in the 70s , there was another shop I use to visit on the same day as new cross, it was on Tibb street , directly opposite a pet shop and they use to sell Norman Rose instrument cases, and of course I still have some of these too ! Back in the 90s I was a Sharp dealer and in the dinner hour while I was on a training course at Newton Heath I took a long walk down the road to look out new cross radio again , however when I got there there was just an empty space where the row of shops use to be so they must have been demolished at some point.

@@michaeldranfield7140 I have a feeling that my house would collapse under the weight of the amount of stuff that I would end up buying, those aviation meters/controls for example - they would be coming home with me!

What ever we do, do not let this stuff go to a museum ! I know it sounds harsh, but once donated many museums are unable to do anything other than display. They may have 10,000 rectifiers, but be unable to sell anything. Better they stay in private hands and be passed around and used.
