That's a really good picture. I usually find they gave rather flat pictures compared to other sets of the era.

Absolute text book Michael. Thank you. Also a clear explanation of fault finding. One day perhaps I'll be brave and have a go ! Loved the milli Ohm meter approach

great video mate, im in my mid 20s and i have really gotten into vcr repairs, first is was cassette decks but i do both now, i have a teac mv550 in my hifi stack of black Teac components that i use to record music onto, its a 4 head with hifi stereo and has all three tape speeds. i have fixed about 20 vcrs so far. i also go a sharp vc-793 which is built like a tank, even got the remote for it, needed the idler reconditioned but other than that its fully working.

It is not possible for me to know what you are doing. You say "I unplug that" while not showing what "that" is.

Enjoyed it. Good old reasoning. Would add some warnings though. The power supply board can store dangerous voltages in the caps.

Could be moisture ingress causing the leak? And if it's been standing for a year, any moisture would have evaporated probably.
@scottgilson32473 күн бұрын
Most likely you're right. The newer display probably has better sealant.
@gadgetmind3 күн бұрын
I've found that moisture on PCBs in radios and kitchen scales can cause mayhem with buttons and rotary encoders. A good clean around with IPA works wonders.

Not sure quite how you figured out what the problem was, but nicely done. You could have bent each of the five retrofit diodes into a "Z" of sorts before fitting them, which would make access for soldering a little easier.

He’s a genius that’s why. He’s also done another video on diagnosing clock signals on these.

Another genius workaround from Michael. The fact that the display is no longer available shows the high failure rate. Samsung gear is not what it used to be.
@richarddunkling28074 күн бұрын
Well done Michael you are a clever chap who certainly don't give up easily, I really enjoy your videos and learn a lot. A while ago I spent some hours investigating a similar non start Samsung Microwave. Not having the circuit or knowledge of relay operations etc I tackled it by visual inspection, re-making various soldered joints, substituting a start switch and latterly substitution of a couple of relays. At some point it started to work again - but not reliably. On days when it failed I left it unplugged overnight and if it worked the next day I would carry on using it on a daily basis until it failed again. Eventually it fixed itself so I was left wondering what was the cause of the problem and expecting the problem to return. I believe in a previous video you mentioned it might be connected to leakage from the display. So when it was not in use I have been disabling the display by pressing the Eco button. I will check to see if the display has ghost L's but will dig out and fit the diodes.

Nicely done Michael. What lead you to this (correct ) guess ? I know decades of experience (same as me in IT), but was there something in the past? To me this is almost like an early start to the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures :) So Happy Christmas too, just a bit early .

8% VAT in 1981. They abolished the 15% rate in 1979. With the arrival of japenese sets and decreasing prices of electronics and higher integrated electronics bringing down the prices, the rentals business model was doomed to fail in the UK. I remember a black and white PYE we had that ran for years, and various models of Grundig, ferguson and Thorn EMi sets rented from radio rentals. We always used to have a guy that used to come out and try to fix them by repatedly tapping the boards in the TV with the blunt end of a screwdriver, but always used to take them away in the van. I don't recall him ever fixing anything on site. I supposed this is why people rented, because if anything went wrong you just got another to replace it.

Great Video! Dear Michael, would a Denon RCD-M41 (made in Japan) - Power Supply markings on back of unit : 100V ~ 50/60Hz work safely in the US? That is - would the Denon Power supply and components handle the US voltages without having to use an external voltage converter? Cheets

Hi Michael, thank u for your video. I have the Denon RCD M40, whenever I turn it off for too long (about 4 hour or more), it would not let me turn it on again, no light on the led. it happen using the power button and also by remote control. Until I unplug the power cord and replug it again, then I can turn it on normally. Could u please advise me what have happen with it?

Most of you guys say the same thing, either the backlights are working or not, so replace the backlights if there not working. But not how to definitely tell if it's the power supply and not the back light.

I started repairing microwave ovens in the early 1980s and got out of it just as the inverter ovens came on the market. With the fake parts, not all of them have sanded surfaces. When semiconductor manufacturers reject parts that don't meet specification, they divert them into a bin and these get sold off as scrap. They are diverted before the markings are applied so they look new and genuine, just with nothing printed on them. Unscrupulous dealers buy these parts and print whatever numbers on them they want so you think you are getting the real deal but in reality the device could be anything.

Panasonic don't publish the whole schematic of the board and the diagram I have was found on the Internet over a year ago but I suspect is was copied out of the back of a microwave service manual

@michaeldranfield71408 күн бұрын
Yes, this happened just the same when Sharp released the Cs chassis TV and we were told it was bacsuse Sharp wanted to build up a history of the problems to aid future development so I guess it was the same with Panasonic.

Could you do a follow up of WHY that missing earth turns the microwave into a useless metal box? Intriguing. Love your videos and your knowledge Michael. Thanks for your help!
@michaeldranfield71408 күн бұрын
Don't ask, leaving this out by mistake cost me a lot of money once , it completely wrote off the front panel of the microwave.
