Looking back almost a year after I watched this video. It was a year where I heard quite a bit of the albums mentioned. Tears for Fears and Porcupine Tree still favorites. Epic comeback for both bands who are favorites of mine. Both phenomenonal crossover Prog-Pop legends. I'm still listening to these 2 albums and probably will will for the rest of my life.

I like the debates in the comments. Prog is an interesting musical art form, that's how i think of it. Truly infinite approaches to it....something for everyone. Rarely an album appeals near universally like close to the edge.

God, I'm so glad I got out of my prog snob phase. So many same-sounding records that are mostly trying to imitate better music from decades ago. Just sad. The truly progressive music of today lies mostly in post-punk, hip-hop, modern classical, minimalist, and electronic.

To say that albums like this one don't necessarily reinvent the genre is not very accurate. Threshold are not a new band on the prog market, which is why they have been making their musical mark for a long time. It feels like it takes me 3 seconds to recognize a new Threshold song. That alone means that they fill their niche precisely and unmistakably. No band that has stood their ground for so long still has the need to prove anything to anyone.

there are or were plans to release music under the "Weather Systems" name, but that seems to be in limbo. Danny Cavanagh also was working on a new solo album titled "Cellar Door," but there also hasn't been much about that or Weather Systems in the last 6 months.

I'm in my 60s now and prog rock originally was progressive, that was the point and now it's become a style, very sad. All this stuff is very generic and it's all been done before and it's become very boring because of that. There is nothing new here with the possible exception of Elder's album, which is good. The rest is all a bit of a snores fest. PT's album is very average and that about sums up this year and the previous 5 or 6 yrs actually. Prog rock is no longer progressive anymore and new music in general bores me lately, very sad. It is all becoming very generic, everybody doing the same old, same old, just listen to your own descriptions, this sounds like this, this sounds like this, it all sounds the same. Boring, boring, boring, very sad. A very bad period we're going through.
@progreport
@progreport 2 жыл бұрын
You're right. Only listening to music made 40 years ago is much more progressive. We'll stop the podcast now.

@@progreport That's not what I'm saying. There is still great stuff out there. Two albums this year by Future Sound of London, Elder, Black Midi, Klaus Schulze, Cult of Luna and a few others. All very Progressive with a capital P but none of them are generic Prog Rock. Don't presume, just because I'm in my 60s doesn't mean I'm stuck in the 70s. Progressive music changed and I didn't stop listening to progressive music, just most of what is now so called prog rock. Most prog rock is NOT progressive these days. Not all of it but most of it. Your list is generic style prog rock and that's all been done, it all sounds the same, it's boring. Argue against me, prove me wrong but you can't, so you come back with, not an educated argument but a generic misrepresentation you presume because of my age. Listen to Andy Edwards KZbin, I'm not the only person who feels like this. Prove me wrong, please. Argue your point, if you can!

@@stuartraybould6433 But the counter is that just being different doesn't making something good. There is a lot of great music out there and something for everybody. Forget the label and just enjoy the music.

@@progreport Totally agree, the label does not matter but in describing music, labels are used and unfortunately Prog Rock as become a fixed style, it wasn't that originally and the style has become stuck. The bands in that style which most of the ones on your list are, are just repeating what's been done and that doesn't make it good, it makes it boring. There is plenty of good music out there, just none of it is Prog rock anymore, that's my argument. You have failed, as of yet, to prove me wrong.
@progreport
@progreport 2 жыл бұрын
@@stuartraybould6433 there is no need to prove you wrong. The label "prog rock" has far expanded what it once was and that is a good thing. You have your taste in what you like and you're entitled. Again, the point is, it doesn't make what "you" don't find interesting, bad or boring. Anyway, good debate and all in good fun.

Great show. I don't agree with all the choices but have 3 comments: 1. Nobody ever remembers that John Wesley was an official member of PT for the last 4 albums. Nothing short of missed by me from the band. 2. Jonas Lindbergh's 1st album was even better than #2. 3. Pattern Seeking Animals 2nd album was better than 3rd.
