Borgarfjordur Eystri is a fjord in Northeast Iceland. The harbor of Hafnarholmi is home to a large puffin colony and known for being one of the best puffin watching areas in the world! Here you will find thousands of puffins on a very accessible cliff from April-August. This place is the perfect detour off the Ring Road and a must add to your Iceland itinerary.

It is ESSENTIAL to mention that road 94 should be avoided at all cost until they finished the road works to Borgarfjörður Eystri, unless you have a fancy (modified) jeep. I would recommend to take route 925 (from Vök Baths) and then turn to road 944 which will re connect to road 94 AFTER the disastrous roadworks. Much safer and less stressful :)

is the alternative you described doable in a campervan ?

The “detour” is like I mentioned much better for every car (and camper). A “regular” gravel road where you can drive easily with a regular 2WD..

Hi there. This is a very important information for us, since we are in that area right now and thinking about going to Borgarfjörður on Monday (Aug 1st). On the map, the 94 looks quite convenient, so we intended to take exactly that road. The 925, is that a gravel road, or a paved road? Thanks for your help.

Beautiful! We did not get to see any puffins when we visited Iceland, but this is exactly what it was like on the cliffs on Shetland Island. 🪶

We were there last week and tried to get to this place. But unless you had a vehicle with tougher tires, you might get a flat tire and that’s what happened to us. Route 94 looks normal on the map, but a gravel road is not too far ahead. Luckily it was in the middle of the day. We went back to the town and quickly got a fix. Thanks for your wonderful videos! I was literally looking for you at the Costco😃

Been there and it’s fantastic!! I arrived two days after the puffins left in 2017, but was able to catch up to them on cliffs near Vik! Great to see you highlighting this place!

Been watching you for couple months. I am trying to plan a ring road trip and will definitely be buying your kit. I was curious your thought mid September what I gain and what I might lose. Looking like maybe September 11-20 time frame. Love to hear your thoughts. Also I do have some mobility issues I can walk but have some difficulties usually under a kilometer and stairs I can do but difficult. I would love to see you do a video describing some ring road attractions and distances from parking lots stairs etc.

We were just in the Westfjords and went to Latrabjarg Cliffs and there were 0 puffins. They leave in Mid-August, so I am told. Many people walked away disappointed that day...

My girlfriend and I will be in Iceland in mid Sept. I hear you state at the end Puffins are only there between April and Aug. Is that only for that area or all of Iceland? If all gone, is there anywhere in Iceland you know of there could be, even in captivity? Not best but I'd like my girl to see one if possible. Thank you for your video. Subscribed

How exactly do you get to the watching area: is it after Borgafjörður Eystri Village? And do we need a 4 X 4 car to get there? Would be very grateful if anyone could reply!

Funny my girlfriend and I just spent the weekend here driving around southern Iceland after watching your videos for the last 2 weeks. One tip that really helped was about the one-lane bridges, but I can't figure out why they built so many of them when they seem to have ample room to make a real two-way one. Any insights? I can't figure it out and it has been bugging me for 4 days!

One lane bridges are easy! Wait until you find yourself in the one lane tunnels that are 3+ kms long.

It cost less to build a one lane bridge. The one place that I wish they had a 2 lane bridge is at Jolkulsarlon glacial lagoon.
