How's everyone doing? 🫶🏾
I've read a total of 5 books for January, and three of them I rated 5 stars ⭐️ so I’m really chuffed with that! It’s been a fab month of reading. Let me know if you’ve read any of these books, or if you have any recommendations for any similar books that you’ll think myself, or anyone else would enjoy!
I'll speak to you in the next one! 💗

As people grow, interests and tastes change and even something that was your favourite thing a few years ago or in childhood can (sadly) become not so enjoyable anymore. I had a massive shift in my likes and dislikes a couple years ago and I honestly struggled to come to terms with the fact that so many of my childhood favourites were no longer there anymore. This year I've decided to reread all the books on my shelves because of it and see what I still like, now that I'm more understandable of that fact. But I totally hear you in feeling sorry for revisiting something and tarnishing your memory of it!!

Hi Nickelle, I think that the main character in Yellowface is meant to be annoying 😂 She is supposed to come across as a terrible human being. Looks like you had a really good reading month 😊 Hope that you’re well!

in yellow face,the whole point is that the characters are supposed to be insufferable. But i’d say you should give RF Kuang another try with Babel!! it’s such a fantastic book with a very big theme of tackling colonialism and racism within academia and in general. it’s so so fantastic

I love the gaming chat! I feel like there's such a crossover between gaming and reading, especially for more story driven games! I'd recommend Life is Strange: Before the Storm if you've just finished Life is Strange! I haven't played Life is Strange 2, because the reviews said it wasn't as good as the first one BUT I've played Life is Strange: True Colours which was AMAZING and I'd highly recommend that one! 🥳

1000% agree! It really goes hand in hand. Any storytelling games I'm ALL over! Ahhh I went ahead and started LIS2 (which I'm really enjoying so far) but yeah I'm definitely not expecting it to be better than the first. It's got a few easter eggs from the first one game though, which I appreciate!! I will 100% play Before the Storm and also the True Colours as I've heard all but good things. 🥰

What an amazing month! You've made me think about how I'd enjoy my old favourites. I've checked that with the Hunger games trilogy and it's still my absolute favourite. With Twilight I'm sure I'll have the same reaction as you. January was one of the best reading months I've had in years. I've read 13 books and it rarely happens with me, I don't even remember the last time it happened. My favourite was Convenience store Woman by Sayaka Murata. It's so short but had me thinking so much. Hope your February will be even better. I'll pick up Daisy Jones asap.

WOW!!!! 13 books!! That's incredible! I'm so glad you had a good reading month, it seems like a lot of us did in Jan too. ☺️ I've added Convenience Store Woman to my TBR, it sounds really thought-provoking. Feb is going okay, but I'm on the verge of DNF'ing a book unfortunately. How about you?
@AnnaShuk
@AnnaShuk 5 ай бұрын
@@NickellesNook damn, same. I nearly DNFed a book and I'm frustrated with myself for pushing through, because it was just okay in the end with a lot of annoying bits. I'm talking about "Lovelight farms" which most of the people loved... Now I'm in a bit of a slumpy situation after finishing amazing fantasy series (the Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty), I loved it a lot. And now nothing interests, even books I was really excited to read. Hopefully it'll pass. Happy reading!🫂

I love your attitude to content warnings - I am the same, I want to go into a book without preconceptions. 💯 Daisy Jones is definitely best consumed through audiobook with or without the physical book. And the show is outstanding. To me some characters were more prominent in one or the other, but both are excellent. The clips I’ve seen of how they cast it and made the show are super interesting. With the diligence they put into the show, the band is believable as a band. When you get a chance you will definitely be in for a treat to watch the show. ❤😊

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo is sooo good, if you can, try not to look too much into it as I loved having it as a surprise ☺️ I’d say defo listen to it as an audiobook too!! So sad the twilight reread wasn’t as good but I’m also kinda not surprised 😂

Absolutely! Such cosy game to play in the evenings. OMG, you’ve played it as well?! 🥺 ugh it’s so good! I’m still thinking about it. Yeah I think I’m gonna play the 2nd one soon. I watched the trailer and it looks like it’s an emotional one. Omg Deb, it was phenomenal! Loved every minute of it. Oooh okay, yeah luckily I don’t know too much about the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I will certainly be reading it soon. Haha, yeah let’s not talk about it 😂😂😂😂😂

i love life is strange! i havent played the other games although im super curious about the prequel! if you like choice games and want a bit more freedom in choices and more action DEFINITELY play Detroit Become Human, its one of my favorite games out there 🥰 i played it at the same time as my boyfriend and my friends and we all ended up getting different endings and we all saw and discovered different things! Cleopatra and Frankenstein is in my tbr and you made me wanna read it sooooo bad 🤭 this january was a terrible reading month for me hahahaha i had my finals and it was truly terrible 😂 only book i could finish was The Picture of Dorian Grey and i had a blast with it, i really wanna read more classics and more gothic novels 🖤 im currently reading Our Share of Night and oh gosh i am LOVING IT, anything culty and dark is an immediate yes for me 🤭 also hi again lol haven´t been able to watch your videos for the longest because if uni, i missed your content !! ❣

Omg it’s so good! Ive just started LIS 2 and im really enjoying it so far! Ahhhh I SOOO want to play Detroit Become Human! I watched Keke Palmer on twitch play it, but sadly I don’t have a PS4 or a PC with enough power/space to play. I only have an Xbox, so I’m unsure if it’ll be available on there. That’s so amazing though that you all had different outcomes, that’s some great writing! I love when games do that! I’m sorry Jan was a rubbish month for reading, it’s good that you finished a book and enjoyed it! Hopefully Feb is a little better for you 💗💗💗 Ooooh I think our share of night may be on my TBR as I thought it sounds pretty interesting! I may have to pick up a copy Awww honestly don’t worry!! Enjoy all the time you have at uni as it’s so short! They truly are some of the best years in life. 🥰🥰🥰 Thanks for the support 💖 xxxx

Speaking of games… Always with the strong mug game! And the strong sweater game!!!! I have Sugar, Baby on the shelves, gonna have to get to that soon. Yellowface, super overhyped and could have gone harder at the industry and that ending WTF!!!???!!! You’ve sold me on Cleopatra and Frankenstein, I’ve been so undecided now sold, sold, sold. Loved Daisy Jones and the Six, love Taylor Jenkins Reid. I didn’t love the show TELL NO ONE!!! Hahaha. What a corking month you had!!!

I finally got to checkout Jay Kristoff's Lifel1k3 audiobook. He always does full production audiobooka as well with robot and space sounds for his fun, fast-paced, YA leaning sci-fis. They are a lot of fun. Daisy Jones is a favorite contemporary lit book of mine too. I will read Sugar Baby now, these themes are interesting to me to read about. Great recs!

I feel you about Yellowface! I also read it this month and it will be in my wrap up when I film tomorrow. The thing about this book...I gave it 2 stars, because like you, I could not stand the characters. And I know the point is for us not to like the mc (she's such a trash person) it made me dislike the book completely.

I also thought Yellowface was just okay...I also rated it 3 stars. I definitely have read better books than it, but i do think it would be a fun one to discuss with a book club. I did get the sense that the author had fun writing it, that it was therapeutic for her. But the book itself was meh
@ceeveegee

totally agree. I thought Yellowface was one of the most overhyped books when meh was how i felt about it too. Plus there is a book that came out before RF Kuang wrote it with a very similar plot - the irony!

It's so funny because the thing I loved about YellowFace *was* how insufferable and annoying the characters were it was comedic I couldn't stop laughing and the justifications June had were so bizarre lol unfortunately Daisy Jones and the Six were the opposite I hated everyone (looking at you Billy Dune) except Camilla, of course, I had to power through for the sake of the show 😭

Haha that’s so interesting!! Yeah I can’t lie, she wrote her characters well. I don’t mind one or two annoying characters, but when the whole book is full of them, I just wanted to throw it away 😂😂 Oh no way?! I really like Billy! I mean yeah, he was problematic as well, but I defo had a soft spot for him. Maybe I’m messy 🙈

I know I'd give the Twilight series low ratings today. There are a lot of things that I ignored when I first read it. Their relationship is just toxic. I even remember rolling my eyes, but still enjoying it at the time and pushing through because it was an easy read and by that I mean a lot of people who aren't fluent in English can read Twilight. Not a dig, just a fact-from what I've observed some fantasy are on a different level in terms of vocabulary and worldbuilding. Now that I've read books where it-the world, characters, and development-was done better, I can't look at the series the same. Are you going to continue? I can imagine New Moon being even harder to get through.
@NickellesNook
@NickellesNook 5 ай бұрын
I completely agree! 😂 I’m not too sure if I’m going to continue to be honest. I thought it was gonna be super nolstagic rereading, but it really wasn’t. I may just stick to the soundtrack and films for the time being 😂
@sophilozophy
@sophilozophy 5 ай бұрын
@@NickellesNook The soundtrack are good. I discovered some new artists that way, but the earlier ones were better than the later releases. I can't watch the movies anymore. The first was my favourite, but I don't even watch that one anymore. Kristen Stewart wasn't acting-in my opinion-as I thought at first, just being herself since watching other films she starred in and realized the mannerisms are her own and not of the character. When I see her in a movie I see her as herself and not the character she is supposed to portray like other actors-which takes me out of the film. Again, just my opinion. I respect that others see it differently.

I've heard that Yellowface is meant to be insufferable to emphasize how horrible it is to steal other authors works and especially when it's racially motivated. Also if you weren't aware Twilight was written by Stephanie Meyer who is a very famous Mormon. If you didn't know Mormon girls grow up being taught that their only place in life is to grow up to marry and have children young so the fact that Bella is so obsessed with this Edward and settling down into a long-term relationship, doesn't have sex until marriage, and doesnt think of anyone else is very Mormon. In fact there's a song/chant at Mormon sleep away girl's camp that literally says "I know a Mormon boy, he is my pride and joy...I'll be his wife...". Bella is obnoxious on purpose because thats how Mormon girls are raised to think about and behave around boys.

Daisy Jones and the Six is an amazing book, such an original and well-executed concept. The TV show unfortunately isn't. They didn't stick to the documentary set-up, and they changed quite a lot to make it all a lot more stereotypically dramatic. A real shame. I stopped watching because it's just another drama show, it didn't have any of the appeal of the book. But maybe you'll feel differently, I know a lot of people liked the show.
