I really enjoyed the start of Convenience Store Woman. I'm not taking the "usual" route people my age am, I have always been different. So I really resonated with that feeling of having to try and fit in, but also I've never been able to. I loved that Keiko was herself and loved what she did. I want to get to that point, because atleast then I can be happy truly, even if people think I am weird

The "hysterical woman" thing is definitely still alive and well - when I was a kid, my doctor labelled me a hypochondriac and never listened to anything I said, and yeeeeears later I found out I had an autoimmune disease all along. Now I'm stuck being chronically ill for life when it could've been nipped in the bud, and a lot of my family and friends still kneejerk react to my health problems as being in my head. 🤷♀️ I mean, maybe that happens to boys/men too........ I loved Yellowface! (And oh dear, I think you've made me want to read Earthlings.)

Mannn seeing how excited you got for Yellowface, I’m BUZZING to see how you react to Babel. From what I’ve seen and even in my own opinion, Yellowface is weaker than her other works (altho I really enjoyed it tbh). You’re gonna be blown away when you read Babel. Also, patriarchal is pronounced pay-tree-ar-cal 😂 I had to break it down myself cos I got confused.

What are your thoughts now i have read a lot of her books not a fan of the smut and language, but overall, i thought the characters and stories were good.

If you enjoyed The Yellow Wallpaper you might like The Haunting Of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. (If you've seen the TV show, they're both great just VERY different stories and themes). Hill House was published in the late 50s and is ostensibly a story about a haunted house. However, I'd argue the story is more about the doubting of women and female repression in that era. IMO Hill House is a book where you get out of it what you put in. Common complaints are that its not scary, boring, nothing happened, etc. and to me that's because they go in expecting a typical horror but when you read between the lines it's more a feminist commentary like The Yellow Wallpaper. And since you enjoyed The Yellow Wallpaper you might really enjoy The Haunting Of Hill House and get invested in the character of Eleanor. It's another short read and there's some really great audiobooks for it out there!!
@JohnSeney11 ай бұрын
Your plot descriptions are always succinct and effective 👍 In an opposite situation of what I said about "American Psycho," consider that the conclusion of "Earthlings" might be literal 😏😼 Similar to Easton Ellis, Murata has never confirmed or denied this, so readers can draw our own conclusions. For example the body morphing of the three friends I think is apparent in the flabbergasted reaction of her sister and the "rescuers." I think it is a very happy ending, even her reliable alien toy Piyyut remains with her! Westerners have only just met Murata but she has been writing such novels in Japan for some time now, and has a large cult following there. Her short stories collected in "Life Ceremony" are even more bizarre and show a longtime great eccentric talent at work. She and the almost entirely unknown Missouri Williams are two women who write in the most underappreciated ways imaginable. But considering the mediocrity of the Western mainstream that rejects them, maybe this is best!
