That was actually offside. There should atleast be two players in front of the reciever to be onside. In general cases, the goalkeeper plus one defender keeps the player onside. But in this case, the goalkeeper is behind the offside line, so there is only 1 player in front the offside line keeping the receiver offside. Imagine that the defender on the goal line is the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper is a defender. Now you can clearly know that it was offside.

As a referee myself, i can say, that the official was spot on! The rule is not 'behind the last defender' but 'behind the second last player on the defending team'. Therefore (since goalkeeper and defender now is swapped) they still play the same role. So offside. Edit: Removed "Refereeing degree" as there is no such thing. But I have been a ref for a long time now. And studied the rules for a long part of my life. :)

So depending if he is past the 10 outfield players and has only the goalkeeper to beat or if he is past 9 outfield player (one outfield player is perhaps on the line) and that he is also passed the goalkeeper, then there will be offside. On the offside rule, it just says that there has to be two defending players infront of the attacking player, for him to be ONside. But if he is in a position where there is only one player (goalkeeper/outfield player - does not matter) then the attacking player is offside. Makes sense? :)

Im a FIFA referee myself, so maybe I can explain, Offside position happens when a player is nearer to the goal line than the ball and 2nd last defender (take note, not last defender). So when the goal keeper moves forward, he puts the player into an offside position. Being in a offside position, may not necessary be penalized, unless you are interfering with play. And for this instance, the offside player took a shot a score, hence interfering with play. It is clear offside, and it is a good decision, since normally the 2nd last defender is a player and not the goal keeper. But for this case, the 2nd last defender became the goal keeper, so the assistant referee had to be alert. Good call!.

@@owen-jj8oj absolutely correct correct, alot of people take the term "defender" in this definition too seriously, here defender can mean both an actual defender or a goalkeeper. So usually the case is that the GK is very close to the goalpost and the defender is creating the offside line but in this case the roles are switched, the defender is closer to goalpost while the goalkeeper is out creating the offside line and this is what confuses alot of people and in this case the commentators

Now defender is the keyword, defender relates to any one who is on the defending team, now unless the goalkeeper is his own team, he counts as the defending team, hence the decision, offside... That is in the simplest I can explain. :)

Im a FIFA referee myself, so maybe I can explain, Offside position happens when a player is nearer to the goal line than the ball and 2nd last defender (take note, not last defender). So when the goal keeper moves forward, he puts the player into an offside position. Being in a offside position, may not necessary be penalized, unless you are interfering with play. And for this instance, the offside player took a shot a score, hence interfering with play. It is clear offside, and it is a good decision, since normally the 2nd last defender is a player and not the goal keeper. But for this case, the 2nd last defender became the goal keeper, so the assistant referee had to be alert. Good call!.

For anyone who’s not understanding why it’s offside, offside zone is the region between the second-to-last man to the goal line. Typically, the last man is the goal keeper and the second-to-last man happens to be a defender However, in this video, the defender in front of the goal is the last man and the goalkeeper is the second to last man.
