I do UX design and it is great. I think if you are a creative visual type it is one of the best careers available. I worked a crappy graphic design job and learned some skills outside of work to transition to UX. The pay is solid, the work/life balance is good, you can do it 100% remotely and it is a very hot field. Plus you get to design websites/apps which is pretty cool. I definitely recommend it for creative types. College degree helps but not required per say if you put in the time to develop skills on your own.
@sarahalkuwairan63512 жыл бұрын
what skills would you say are the most important to develop?
@frogturtle2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahalkuwairan6351good question…this is going to be a long answer, but I would consider studying these areas: UX PROCESS: this is the most important piece in my opinion…from identifying a problem, to understanding your target audience, what do your users like and dislike about existing products, how will your solution make their experience better, mapping out user journeys, interpreting user research, constructing prototypes, etc. Find some books or videos and try to get a grasp on this. It’s a lot to understand but you’ll get the hang of it after a while USABILITY PRINCIPLES: basically just understanding what good practices and bad practices are in terms of building a functional and pleasant user experience. Understand accessibility (making designs that are usable by people with various impairments such as color blindness) VISUAL DESIGN SKILLS: not all UX designers need to be skilled visual designers but they compliment each other very well. Once again watch some tutorials on graphic/visual design principles, particularly for designing interfaces SOFTWARE: I primarily use Adobe XD for building prototypes, but you can also use things like Sketch, Figma, Axure, etc. Try out a few and see what you like. Also learning Illustrator/Photoshop is helpful, maybe a mapping tool like LucidChart, Miro or FigJam as well DESIGN SYSTEMS: these are guidelines to help you build products, for example Human Interface Guidelines (Apple) and Material Design (Google) are giant libraries of components (icons, buttons, text, etc.) with explanations into how and when to use each one. Very good to know this stuff What I would recommend is first is just watch some videos or read some books on UX design basics. Understand the field and what it entails. As you get more advanced, test your skills by designing your own product prototype. Show it to your friends and get some feedback. It will just be for practice so don’t get discouraged if it isn’t great at first. I know that’s a lot but there is a lot of thinking that goes into UX! Like anything just invest time and you’ll develop skills and understanding. One piece of wisdom I will leave you with that I learned on the job…”cool” is a four-letter word (as in a naughty word.) A lot of inexperienced UX designers go for designs that just look “cool” rather than trying to solve a real problem and offer a great experience to their users. Think of Amazon. It doesn’t look that cool but it works amazingly well. Hope that helps!
@halahsmith99312 жыл бұрын
If we were to go the degree route, what degree would you recommend to get into this industry?
@frogturtle2 жыл бұрын
@@halahsmith9931 I personally went to design school which was a mix of fine art, design principles and technology (animation, software, etc.) and I just got a bachelor’s degree I actually did not specifically go to school to learn UX, but some of the skills I learned transferred over I’m not sure if you truly need a degree to learn UX, but I find the college environment helpful for learning, networking, and learning other skills that are useful in jobs. It will also help you stand out compared to someone who didn’t go to college, provided your skills are where they should be when applying. But I understand these days student debt is a problem for a lot of people I would look into universities that offer design programs, and see which majors offer a blend of visual design/graphic design skills, technology and design thinking. Or if a UX design major exists, that could be a good bet. They weren’t really a thing when I was in college Maybe take some psych classes on the side to learn about human behavior/response to stimuli, research methods, etc. just to broaden your knowledge…or read books on those topics at least UX is tricky because sometimes it is more visual, sometimes it is more about planning/data analysis, and other times it is about conducting research…I went a more visual route at first and learned the psychological/data aspects later. that is just my path though, so what was best for me may not be best for you and vice versa. I would just google “UX career paths” or “getting started in UX” or “best majors/schools for UX”, and see what makes sense for your interests hope that helps!

Luckily I was self-motivated and guided into college by my high school guidance counselor and got my bachelor's degree, but it was in Communications (I had absolutely no direction or clue what to study mind you this was in 2011). Anyways, your content has helped me pursue more strategic paths at work without having to go back to school and get into debt for a worthless master's degree. I currently work at a local government agency as a community relations assistant with a hybrid schedule and I'm going to double down on my technical skills rather than theory such as bilingual translation, project management, copywriting, and graphic design. I wish more high school guidance counselors or other educational pipelines were as helpful as your channel has been in finding upward mobility. Thanks again!

Good list, but want to make a note for anyone else without experience, the tier placement is highly subjective. I'm a game dev who now works remote doing art and engineering work. It does take more effort to collaborate remotely, but also gives me more time to focus on problem solving and getting work done. It can be easy to get bogged down with meetings and interruptions in a work place. It's a bit of a trade off, but I'd put engineering higher on my list. I've also had to do digital marketing for my own game I've made with a few other guys. I can tell you, with our personality types, it was absolutely the worst part of making a game for all of us. There are some people who enjoy that stuff, but as for me and my friends/colleagues we HATE it. I'd be D/F tier for me.

If this guys says "IT jobs are you're kind of waiting for something wrong to happen ...", he basically acknowledges that he has no clue what the majority of IT people are actually doing on a day-to-day basis... Far less than 10% of IT staff in any organization are on call to fix some problem (bug). The vast majority of IT staff on call are busy handling all kinds of service requests, like answering questions, new employees needing IT facilities to work, revoke permission to access systems of colleagues who left the organization, requests for something new, more, etc., but that's not fixing "problems".

Not a bad vid! One thing I'd say you're overselling is how easy it is to get some of these remote jobs to folks that haven't applied. Folks, remote jobs are not like your retail or fast food jobs in your city or town where you throw in an app and basically have a job offer. For better or worse, most of y'all are going to have to put in a lot of applications and time to land even one of the "easier" jobs this guy is promoting. It took me a solid 6 months to land my first remote contract as a part time customer rep through Upwork and another year to land an actual full time remote job -- and I put in A TON of applications through various job sites. It was definitely a journey but if you want it enough chances are you can make it happen -- whether you get lucky and land a remote gig out the gate you want or are like me and it takes some time...just keep pushing! 🍻

My job definitely can be done remotely, but we are so short staff they haven't converted us over. Really annoying but I just got a CS degree. I'm hoping to stay in the medical field but in IT position because I'm in a government job but if not I'll venture out. I'm trying to be patient though.

How do you even get jobs like these? Like I can’t find any remote data entry jobs.

I really want to get a remote job, but it looks like a lot of these jobs are going to be replaced by ai in the next couple of years. Do you know any remote jobs that have good protection against ai replacement?

Engineering as a remote job is difficult? dude is smoking something. The challenge of the job has nothing to do with location, so it can be totally remote. I've been remote 19 years, but it's sooo much easier to find remote work now... and, salary is only limited by your skills. 200k is not unusual, even fully remote.

@Btombrand well... thank you for saying I have a high IQ, but there doesn't have to be tuition costs. I went to school as a designer, started coding on the job, no tuition costs for me to become an engineer. And many imposters I know started the same way. There are so many resources online to learn how to code. The hardest part is just the hurdle of even entry level jobs wanting experience. If you can get the door open, find some company to give you a shot, you're off to the races, with plenty of remote work out there.

Depends on what level of IT. I work a remote Level 1/2 IT Support role, and I work 8 hours out of an 8 hour shift. There is zero downtime. Higher level roles; Network admins, Server admins, etc are way less busy throughout the day

I'm curious if your opinions on these positions have changed with the growing prevalence of AI. Seems like a lot of these can easily be replaced by AI.

The fun part about data entry was that you can just pay someone in a 3rd world country to get it done for you :D The sad part was I got fired

Depends on industry. Game dev is awful, low pay and long hours plus most companies layoff a mass amount of employees once a project is finished. Film can have good pay but same thing, long hours and layoff once project is completed, unless you are part of that core team. I’d suggest looking into ArchViz. It’s hard to get into a firm, however if you have great chops, vast software skills and enjoy design, then you can make a good career out of it.

Where can I look to find remote job work?
@Josh-ch3nv11 ай бұрын
I strongly disagree with your assessment of customer service representative and how easy it is to get a job. Every one I've looked at wants two or more years in the field specific to that call station. Others want to know that your previous experience has been "mostly phone or text based customers service and not in person." I was actually passed over twice by a company that does Payroll and HR as an app because my customers service experience has been in person with a rental house, in a pharmacy, in fast food, and Sam's club. Yes... I've worked that many different jobs and this entry level call station told me they didn't think I could learn their system and that I did not have the qualifications for their ENTRY LEVEL Customer Service Representative job...

I disagree with you about customer service rep being easy to get into. I have been trying to get in for over two years and nothing. I have twenty years of experience as a rep
