I used to instruct the use of flex cuffs for a private security contractor, just a different model. Four safety/legal points: 1) Especially if you do not have extensive practice in it, *do not* physically search or cuff without back-up present. Wait for someone to arrive to assist with control of the suspect, and as a witness. 2) Over-tightening the cuffs to the point of cutting off the suspect's circulation can cause significant injury if left that way. Check them after application. Besides that, you could get sued over it if they can prove damages. In the event you discover that they are too tight, apply a second pair to the proper tightness, then cut the first pair. 3) The best tool for cutting flex cuffs is EMT shears. First, they cut very well through a lot of things - very useful tool to have. Second, they don't have sharp points. You don't have much opportunity to accidentally cut the suspect, which can get you sued and will look really bad in front of a jury. They also don't make a good weapon to be used against you or someone else. Unless they've been incorrectly applied (per #2 above), you really ought to let a commissioned law enforcement officer or a paramedic be the one to cut them off. Then the liability for what happens is on them. 4) In some states, a citizen who is not a law enforcement/public safety officer can only affect a citizen's arrest. In some states, cuffing them is arresting them. You need to know your state and local laws regarding citizen's arrest, and what you can and cannot do. If you affect a citizen's arrest, you *will* be put on the stand as the arresting officer, and you'll be held equally accountable as a law enforcement officer, even if you're ignorant to the state and local laws, standards, and procedures. If you were wrong, you can be sued for false arrest. If you did something improperly, you could get sued for excessive force, or they could get let go on a technicallity. If you weren't a victim at the outset of the incident, you will be one by the end of it if you screw it up. All that being said, I would still favor having them in supply. Now that I know where to get good ones for cheap, I think I'll buy a few.

they're pretty bulky and have a potential to catch ...I don't doubt they're good restraints but I'd like to see a load out using them in different scenarios such as plain clothes, plate carrier, duty uniform etc

You don't even need to cuff the people breaking in to your house. Just call the police and tell them you've shot the intruders - the police will be there in no time! :D

I mean using these in a home invasion is straight common sense, but using hollow points to never touch them makes way more sense. if someone is bad enough that attacking my loved ones that needs to be in cuffs, that's LE's job. But its my job to stop it in it's tracks.

I hate these types of restraints, unless you are in a riot situation where they arrests are happening more than vegas hookers pick up clients during a spring break pay day. Other than that i do not use them at all. too big if set up like that in video, and takes too long to set them up when not preloaded as i call it. Regular smith and wesson cuffs work just fine.

How would u keep them from running? Threaten their life? You cannot take a persons life if they're not an imminent threat.
@Dcook85
@Dcook85 9 жыл бұрын
Zachary Schinbeckler Unless you have someone else with a gun backing you, I wouldn't recommend getting close to cuff them by yourself....that could get ugly. Just keep your gun trained on them. If they run, whatever they run. Don't shoot them running because that's not justified, only while they are an active threat to your life or your families. Stay safe.

879doogie Bad advice, that will likely land you in prison because you killed a man who was no longer a threat to you and running away. Your self defense and castle doctrine claims won't protect you there. I understand the temptation though.

550 cord works better. Two self tightening knots on a foot or so of cord will do the same thing, and you can repurpose some of those 1000's of feet you all have through your house.

I dont think these have a double lock feature to stop the arrested individual accidently furthur tightening them. Not sure I could trust that omission.
@davidwarren719
@davidwarren719 8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about it. I'm not entirely familiar with this particular model but I don't believe they are quite rigid enough to be over-tightened due to pressure applied from a superior angle relative to the cuff--as steel cuffs are. To do so one would have to further pull the tightening tabs from the posterior/inferior angle and I don't foresee that being easy to do unintentionally.

why do cops always call people subjects? I am NOT your damn subject. You work for me.
@davidwarren719
@davidwarren719 8 жыл бұрын
"Subject" as in a pivotal organism relevant to a specific incident at hand, not "subject" as in one who is subjugated by and/or subservient of another. Words have different meanings and police officers are obligated to use certain language for legal reasons--such as to protect their testimonies from being twisted by litigators in the courtroom and elsewhere. It's actually done to protect you from intentionally malicious interpretations being used to win civil and criminal cases against otherwise innocent and unimpunable citizens--that's what a lawyer's specialty is. So the use of--or rather misuse of--vocaulary to imply corruption or contention from the police forces who do in fact serve and protect you is asinine, and in my humble opinion--reprehensible.

I don't think I'd ever say it's difficult to use a cuff key. It is easy to carry a bunch of these or other flex cuffs. I've used both most for about 12 years, I'll always use metal restraints as long as possible.
