Mobile CB Radio Antenna comparison 10 CB Radio Mobile Antennas, witch one performs best? In this video I test between 10 Mobile CB Antennas, In this test I use a fixed roof mount on 19A so I don't bother any other stations, 4 watts out AM, at a range of 5.3 miles from my home Base Station. The receiver is a Connex Saturn on a Hy Gain CLR 2 5/8 wave ground plane...................................
NOTE..... I have the RF Gain on my receiver set at 1 0'Clock, otherwise all signals would read S-9 or higher and the radios AGC would not allow us to see the forward swing as much.

Nice video. I almost got a Wilson 1000 recently until I watched the 4' Firestick handily outperform it here. I'm happy with the triple mag base 3/8 connect because I can put anything that threads into it on my roof. My 4' Firestick is working very well with a 1.10 to 1 match across the band. Not knocking Wilson, just happy I ended up where I did. The 102" whip is still my favorite of all time. It worked great hole mounted on the roof of my old Saturn SL2. Thanks again!

One thing to remember is that one antenna make work great on one car and not so good on another car because of the ground plane. Half of the antennas performance is dependent on your vehicle. On my car before I got an amp and was just running my modified anytone 6666 I was running a mag mount wilson 1000. I went with it over some others I had tested with a friend. Now that I have a 4 pill I went with another antenna setup because even though the Wilson 1000’s power rating of the antenna itself is high enough the coax it comes with would be pushed to the limit and given how magnetic ground coupling works I needed more than just one magnet. It would work with that single magnet but I’ve seen where it gets hot and the paint starts to bubble. So I went with the workman Lpad triple mag mount that you can attach your own coax too. I tested a few antennas and the 6 foot skip shooter performed the best, but the Wilson 2000 trucker with the 5 inch base shaft was very very close. But like I was saying what works the best on my car might not be the best for yours. It’s always good to try multiple and go with what works best for your car. I know the people at my local truck stop must hate me because I’ll go in and buy 5 antennas, come back the next day and return 4 lol.

@@390WagonMaster I built a low-center loaded 7' total which actually beats out both a 102" SS whip and a full length Francis Amazer. - The coil has to be the correct diameter, correct height above the roof, correct number of turns, correct spacing of each coil turn, but when you get it all just right it's amazing!
@kingduckford
@kingduckford 3 жыл бұрын
I used to run the 102" whip by itself, not trusting any of the springs. Finally I bought the spring to get it to 108" total length, which is theoretically the correct length for 11 meter work. The 102" is technically for 10 meter work. SWR dropped from ~1.5:1 throughout the band down to ~1.1:1 throughout the band. How much does this actually improve real world performance? Does it really clean up the audio and radiate better? So far my own tests indicate slightly. I run 108" whip all the time, mobile. Never a performance issue. I drive old US luxury cars so my ground plane is terrific, which never hurts. I've been able to talk back home through trees 10 miles back to base station with 5 watts carrier. The other large antennas performed very well in this test. Very interesting.

I also ran a test many years ago. I used a solid tone to give a steady signal strength. I also used a triple mag mount with multiple quick disconnects on each previously tuned antenna. The time period I between tests was 15 seconds as atmospheric conditions can change. The results were noted on a video made of a TS-940's S-meter.... An antenna type you did not test won this test. Just by a small margin. It was specifically called the X-Terminator. Many clones of this antenna have since been made. Basically it is a dual coil thick conductor 5'5" antenna. The results of this particular test are as follow: Twenty four mile free and clear of obstructions. 108" SS .25 S-units 7' Firestik 1.3 S-units X-Terminator 1.5 S-units Very close but one thing that stands out is that the X-Terminator is only 5'5"

It may have not had the highest signal I still liked the Wilson 1000 which I am going to get to replace my Little Will. I used to have the Wilson 500 and that worked just fine on bot the 11 and 10M band. I had a flat 1.1 to1 SWR at ch 20 and about 1.5 to1 up around 27.865Mhz on USB and about 1.5 to 1 going down to 26.655Mhz. I had a 300 watt Dave Made Texas Star. I used it mainly for DX but then when i was on I-91 going through Mass and Vermont I used it on Channel 14 to mess with the French Canadian truckers who were running who knows how much power but they messed up Ch 19 splashing at least 10 channels to either side. They didn't like it when I told them that the FCC says you need to speak English on the CB. I wish I knew what they were telling me when they were cursing me out in French.

Hi WagonMaster, Good Video. Unfortunately you would need to be parked or you will can opener your roof with some of the larger antennas you tested. If you do not mind blowing a few bucks. I would like to see a test with the top load Hustler HQ27 (that antenna has been around since the 1970's) The HQ27's were frequently seen on tractor trailers (also available in dual twin trucker set ups). As the quality on some of the newer antennas has cheapened and the CB shops frequently buy the junk they can get for the lowest price, Most CB'ers usually need to hunt for the Sirio's, Wilson 1000's (they usually out perform the 5000's), and the K40's. I am under the belief that the HQ27 should out perform the 4' FireStick and ALL antennas of similar size. I am in the process of upgrading to a Breedlove 3" Puck mount for the strongest roof mount available.
@390WagonMaster
@390WagonMaster 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the HQ is a great antenna, Dad had one on his company car. I have a Mr. Coily mount ( 6+ inches in diameter )that I need to install up top. But even that will be shaky as the metal is Toyota thin. The basis for the test was that i would have the most unobstructed and highest point for testing, real world fender and mag mounts seem to be the norm now. In my testing and owning wilson base loads since they were introduced, the 5000 has much better RX than the 1K.
@arlenewolf5260
@arlenewolf5260 2 жыл бұрын
Hi WagonMaaster, You are definitely correct when you advised that Toyota has super thin skin. There are some rugged mounts, but other than the 3" Breedlove puck mount I would stay away. For the Toyota I would go with the UHF/SO239 three inch puck and go with the Sirio Turbo 5000 as that whip is probably the thinnest & has the least wind load and retire the Mr. Coily. That Mr. Coily will over time fatigue the roof (and probably crack the metal), I wouldn't risk it. The Sirio is definitely wide banded and has an amazing TX & receive (unless you want to try the HQ27 top load), I give the top load 2 thumbs up). On the Mag mounts, the heavy magnet mounts pull the metallic flakes through the paint and totally damage the paint over time. Also I would go with LMR 240 Coax. It has a 100% foil wrap shield over the insulator with a 95-98% braid shield over the foil. Also the next holes in the roof will be going in my 2022 Silverado Crew cab, 3.0 Duramax with 6 1/2 bed. I will put a NMO (3" puck mount)for my NMO 2/70 ham antenna and a UHF SO239 for the CB with a Sirio Turbo 5000 or an adaptor for the HQ27. On the ham radio I am currently running a Motorola DMR Mototrbo (spelled correctly) 7cm all in the mic radio (I am not currently running 2M).. For the CB I am having some difficulty with a mount as the Silverado has the full console and no place to easily mount a CB. I am going to try to mount a CB in the side pocket in the console.

I had a real problem with stray reflections from solar-panels on my camper (caused high SWR even when disconnected). After numerous trials the ONLY antenna that overcame the problem was the top-loaded Firestik 2 and Firefly. Great bits of kit! Aw the (friendly) argument of all time. Anytime a "coil" is intruduced you have some sort of loss. Idc how much those fancy coil antennas cost. they look pretty... 108in SS whip will always be king for performance (cb band) (102in was for 10m band) . The only reason for "coils" or "loads" was because folks didn't want a 108inch whip on the mobile!!! lol I get that. roof mount, center of vehical, "drill the hole!!" On a beater ol junker car back in the day? sure, why not. On todays newer rides? esh!! never know whats under the skin to drill through. and the resale on a mobile after you "made it yours"? good luck. Antenna theory isn't anything new. 1/4 wave is.........1/4wave. Now, top load vs mid load vs bottom loaded antennas? that would be a good "show down". all have there place when it comes to install. Open coil antenna sucked azz on the semi truck when they iced up or freezing fog ect. Fiberglass always had some sort of "static" when cruzing down the road talkin' trash... they made fun of my 108in on the bottom bar or my west coast mirror leaning slightly fwd when parked (82 359 peterbult, 89 FLD120 Frieght liner). looked goofy, but talked best (back when semis where made of steel and aluminum, not composite/plastic) I guess same goes for cars and pick ups these days. I always had some sort of set back running a magmount. rf feed back into something, vehicals ECM or the famous fuel pump or alternator whine... (late 80's - 2000's fuel injected cars/ trucks) Now, I get to hear RFI when a fancy loaded Denali passes me or something of that nature. Mobile radio life is tuff these days. Anyone rememeber someone running "race spark plug wire set" and non resistor spark plugs? could hear your buddy on your CB coming 2, 3 blocks away on your CB radio!! lol aw good times... anyways, good stuff 390.... I'm still not "drilling the hole" in my Camaro Convertable, I can't even get a simple "old school" trunk mount lip to fit on that thing!!! or I would roll into Planet Utah with a 108in swaing on the trunk mount lip, talkin' trash on the radio for a visit. Stay cool bro, catch ya on the next Thurs live vid or? on air? Peace 2-351 NColorado "talkin trash on the sideband" or "just SandBaggin". 73

The 7' Skip Shooter was the strongest, at least for this local groundwave test, but for short (~500 mi) DX you may find one of the full 1/4 waves may be a bit better due to their higher TOA from their maximum current being at the bottom with a more upward TOA than a top loaded.

Interesting to see the difference in the 4’ skipshooter and 4’ firestik….I’ve always been partial to the firestik2 and by these results it has nearly 1s unit above the ss of equal length….in fact it seems to run with the 7’ ss and 8’ straight whip and is half the length….the half breed is surprising as well…for a shorter antenna it did well….For a shortened top loaded I’m still loyal to firestik….I own several skipshooters (2 6foot my 7 foot fell apart) and several firestik (3 4foot 1 5foot 2 7foot) and for some reason I prefer the firestik….not sure why other than they don’t disappoint they just work….also have 2 96” Francis that I don’t run much due to not any replacements if I broke one….but they do great when I do decide to use them….have one 108” and plenty of 102” stainless….everyone knows how they do….thanks for doing this it’s a great video…..shows real results and shows even the pro comm stuff can be decent if you have a good ground plane….set that a10 up and run it against the 5k….I’d like to see how close they are

I have always liked the Skipshooter and the Firestik's and honestly did not think there would be any difference, but as we can see there is, sure wasn't expecting that:) The Half Breed has always been a decent antenna, I have installed them on a lot of mobiles, mostly big rigs, they hold up well and perform good, I have had some trouble tuning them on mirror mounts from time to time. I used to run a Francis 102 back in the day, it was a great antenna however when I would pump 3-400+ watts through it, the SWRs would climb as it heated up. Hahaha, I got a kick out of that! It would sure be a lot easier to read the difference in signal strength on the meter if you'd just say, *_''AHHHHHHHHHHHHH''_* and hold it for a full second or more.

Nice comparison. I'd like to see a Sirio Performer 5000 in that test. Also the real 102" steel whip is actually a 108" steel whip. MFJ was selling them a few years back. I also like my 7ft skipshooter when shooting skip stationary in the mobile.

Research "End Effect" - if you had full 108" it would tune flat down around 26.000 MHz

Greetings friends In the car ..What do you have to do with the surplus cable? If the base has 4 meters of cable, but my station is only 1.50, what do I do with the cable that is left over? Rolling it at somewhere? , short and weld back the pl again? ..
@390WagonMaster
@390WagonMaster 2 жыл бұрын
I roll my cable up as close to the antenna as possible, or just zig zag the cable in a kick panel or on the side of the carpet. But, not under the carpet where people will smash it with their feet. But IMHO, don't cut it.

Believe it or not, some 1/4 wave magnet mount antennas will do a very good job. I have a Wilson 1000 that I've done very well with on both CB (11 meters) and on Ham (10 meters). The Wilson 1000 & 5000, Stryker and the Sirio magnet mount antennas are very good performers (must be placed on the center of the vehicle's roof. BTW - Before buying any magnet mount mobile antenna, check first to verify that your car/truck/SUV has a metal (steel) roof. A friend of mine has a Kia SUV and sadly, the majority of his roof is either plexiglass or plastic. Consequently, he had to return his magnet mount antenna for a refund.

Out of all the mag mounts I have used over the years I like the Wilson 5000 the most. I know you can buy 3 and 4 magnet mounts and put on a whip or a coil type that would possibly work better (not by much) but as an out of the box antenna the 5000 is my favorite .. IMHO

@@VicGreenBitcoin no they make a magnet mount. I've used the 1000 and very happy. The 5000 and 1000 are same just the 1000 Handel's 3000 watts and 5000 5000 watts but either out of the box is great.

I have zero problems with FireStik antennas, sold them and the Skipshooters for years. They are both top performers and very few comebacks. IMHO I would rather use a Cobra 29 ( not the new 29 AM/FM) over the Richard. Richards and Walkers have low transmit audio.(modulation)

I want to put a cb on a camper van that has 400w of solar on it. Can I mount a antenna up there without getting any interference. Thinking about the Radioddity cb-27 what antenna would you recommend.
@390WagonMaster
@390WagonMaster 3 жыл бұрын
Well I would "try" a top load antenna, so your transmitted signal wont be blocked by the panels, (stay away from any base load antenna) You may have to experiment a bit. Also by using a top load antenna you should have less reflected power (SWRs) . One last bit.. Get a real CB Radio. Use a Cobra 25 or Uniden 68 at a minimum. The "radio" you are looking at will have a terrible noise floor and more that likely have a hard time filtering out any noise from you solar setup. IMHO Great question and thanks for watching.

@@390WagonMaster ... I own a CB-27 and it works just as well as my Cobra 25 LTD Classic but has better audio than the Cobra with a stock mic. The Cobra (neither radio has ever been opened) puts out a 3 watt meter reading while the CB-27 puts out almost 4 full watts (no modulation for both tests as a modulated signal changes the results). The Cobra shows 75% modulation while the CB-27 shows 90%. With modulation (signal generator per factory alignment specs) the Cobra shows 4 watts while the CB-27 shows 5.6 watts. (note: The difference in output is insignificant at the receiving station in the real world using the same antenna on both radios.) Both radios shave similar wave forms on the scope with little to no spurious artifacts showing up outside of the allowed bandwidth. I get good signal reports on both radios (the Cobra does have a power mic on it for on the air use) but the CB-27 with it's stock mic gets the edge in the audio department. As for the noise floor, both radios are about the same with the Cobra having an edge due to the switchable filters but the CB-27 is still quite usable! Disclaimer: All test results are dependent on quality control at the respective factories at a given moment as a radio made on one day may have different actual specs (real world verses factory) to one made on a different day due to variations in component quality/manufacturer from run to another. Plus testing variations from one local to another. My actual on air results will be different that someone else's in another location, antenna, power source, etc being taken into consideration. So, get advice but use your own judgment and never take anyone's word as gospel and get the radio set-up that best suits your needs! By the way, nice video! 73's John, N1WOM

The brand, "Solarcon" makes the A-99 Antron 99, 18 foot fiberglass antenna. It comes in three 6 foot pieces that screw together. It doesn't corrode like the aluminum antennas can. There are smaller antennas available if that is too large.
