The first video I put out on this radio a few months back got some backlash. Mostly centered around the radios lack of general 1-30mhz coverage and a lack of SSB mode.
While I felt that these are nice features, I was still please with my radio. Well, a few months have past and wow, the engineers over at Choyong stayed busy. First they added general coverage from .1 to 30mhz, then they added SSB modes to hear all the Ham coverstations. Then they updated the internet radio side of things, then they added voice search, now they have removed an issue with some of their radios that apparently caused harmonics on certain freqs. While I never had an issue with it, apparently they wanted it fixed, so they fixed it!
They also made a lot of minor updates to try and improve the AM reception, witch I find to be it's only real weakness. While still not a performer on that band, it sure is a changed radio.
I loved it when it first came out, and with these updates, I love it enough to have gone out and bought a second one with my own money. The truth is, there is no other radio out there like it at any price. The internet radio side is a constant gift of new and random stations that no regular radio could ever hope to receive.
I love it. If you are interested in getting one, here is the link:

I appreciate this fair, balanced and honest review. I’ve been following Choyong on Facebook and it’s clear they’re invested in their product by taking feedback and updating the product software. 👍 review. Choyong now sells an LC90 mini for $50 less and a smaller am/fm/internet model the A8W for $99.

You need to test that SIM card feature for us, that has some potential for being a game changer and I have never seen that in a radio. And the hart button is something I like if it is a one button press to add whatever I am tuned to to a favorites list. And can you add podcasts? Can it provide a menu of podcast episodes to choose from if provided a link? Podcasts are to radio what KZbin is to tv.

I enjoyed both your reviews of this radio Eric and I agree with you, it is a great radio. They do have a mini version and I’ve heard rumblings of an LC100 rolling out soon. I would like to see the LC90 with a kickstand, separate bass & treble, keypad entry for search, an adjustable display for brightness so at night it doesn’t disturb my wife’s sleep, better coordination on the display especially when you switch bands and tune with the knob, and yeah better AM but like you that’s why I like the Internet side to get those stations on the stream. I have a sim in mine and it works great! And I would love to have a tabletop version of this radio. Keep up the good reviews NC!

A “birdie” is an internally generated frequency within the circuitry that will present itself as you manualy tune or use the search function, by showing up as a strong yet quiet signal at various places along the frequency range, with no data on that frequency. Some radio’s and particularly scanners can have many, a few or none. Try a KZbin search on what is a radio birdie.

Interesting. Either my two units didn't have the issue, or it was so minor that it never bothered me while listening. Whatever the case, apparently they cured the issue with the 4.5 software update. Makes me wonder what other radios I own that have this issue. I am fairly deaf (80% one ear, 60% in the other) so perhaps that is why I don't notice it?

We're heading toward another firmware update in coming weeks, which will be aimed at addressing some of the shortcomings with the Internet section. As for SSB, it remains less than satisfactory because the radio was not built for that feature from the ground up and is firmware implemented.

I have one and love it. I use it mostly for internet radio, however I have used it for terrestrial radio as well. FM is excellent, SW is decent with the internal antenna, great with an external antenna. AM is pretty terrible, but I can get most of those on the internet part of the radio. Otherwise for terrestrial radio that is what my Tecsun PL-990 is for.

Yes, and if you are a shortwave listener it would be a problem interfering with stations you want to listen too. Glad they fixed the problem with firmware. @@FarpointFarms one other point I left out the radio doesn’t put out this interference on every frequency but just some that aren’t filtered out like current local oscillator mixed with particular intermediate frequencies and that special combination makes the birdie irregular and annoying another example a cheaper scanner will also have this quirk so I suppose depending on use case you may encounter depending on the design of the receiver and the proper shielding characteristics. There maybe a Wikipedia article on birdies and the math used to determine where and when a birdie will show up. I’m glad I could give you a starting point into the quirks of radios designed for our information and entertainment consumption. Have a good day

There is probably a school of radio enthusiasts who just love traditional radio and really don't consider internet radio to be real radio. I recently bought a radio and decided to go with the Tecsun PL-880. It's a terrific radio with very few shortcomings and does just what I want it to do. I did consider the LC90 in this decision, but I just didn't feel that the LC90 is a solid performer on the traditional radio end for my needs. Not having a radio stand and a logical location for the radio jacks is also a deal killer. I wanted a radio that would be very useful during times of emergency by being independent of the internet and cell towers. Though SSB is popular with ham operators, there is more on SSB than just hams. You can also pull in aircraft and air traffic control (ATC), ships at sea, military, spy network, clandestine, and pirate transmissions. Occasionally some shortwave broadcast stations use SSB as well. The LC90 is a nice beginning for an integrated radio. It can only get better and may someday be a radio I want to own. I would also like to see a base station radio in the future. For now it may be better to own two radios, a solid internet radio and a solid traditional radio until a better integrated radio is made.

They are really missing the boat on Internet Radio. It's the KZbin of radio. Anyone can broadcast for free and reach a worldwide audience. I've been "On the Air" since late 1999 and still enjoy it to this day. So many channels out there and those don't include all the smaller mom and pop AM stations scattered around the USA that I would never be able to hear over the air. It's what sold me on this radio and it's why I continue to feel it's the best radio I've reviewed.

There are only two things that come to mind that would be awesome. FM narrow on 25-30 MHz would be useful. A simple walkie talkie app like Zello using the mic and a push to talk button. Allow the walkie talkie to interrupt the current radio or internet stream just long enough to send or receive a message.

Zello because a lot of Ham Radio remote controllers use Zello. So, ya see, with Zello app they could be anywhere in the world listening on shortwave but then transmitting back to the world from their home radio station.

I do have one issue with playing certain internet stations. Some stations load quick and show no loading time, and begin to play, and every 10 seconds it buffers. It seems to be with certain stations. One station that does it is WAXQ 104.3 in New York. I wonder if it’s doing that with anyone else’s. I appreciate any input. I did update to the latest 4.5 firmware.
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 2 күн бұрын
As someone who broadcasts on ShoutCast. I can tell you that issue is from the source. The stations that have longer load times and buffering are usually suffering from one of two things. 1st is too high a bit rate. If they try to send out CD quality sound to many listeners it bogs down the connection. 2nd. Too low of a internet connection. The faster the connection speed they have, the faster they can get a station sent to your device. For my tiny station the solution was to lower the bit rate to a very low setting and I changed it to mono. Now? No more buffering and almost instant connection. You can reach out to the stations that are buffering and see if they are aware of the issue.

I don’t think hate is the right word, it’s easy to bang about haters these days and this seems to have got a little personal for you. Since the old days of Sony and others being involved with portable radios the market has been quiet for decades. China has awoken to the wants of people for radios today so we are going through a phase of almost reinventing the portable world -band receiver again with new technology. Unfortunately the fundamental point is still radio reception so of course consumers want better and cheaply made radios with birdies and other issues should be pointed out so that the manufacturer can do better. We’ve had great radios in the past so there has been a benchmark set so why do we have to accept less? Manufacturers need to try harder to make better products and we should not accept ‘it will do”. Of course there needs to be a cheaper-end product as consumers can’t always pay the price. Myself I have the Qodosen SR-286 BUT it will never be a replacement for my JRC NRD-535DG, the Qodosen is what it is a little portable radio not in the same league as a professional receiver.

Comments like "Your not qualified to review radios" and "You don't know anything about radios". These are garbage and were deleted as they are totally uncalled for. I make videos for people interested in products. If they are not, I assume they were raised well enough to know that they should just move on, but some apparently were not.

I had the first one and I liked it, but felt it was a little complicated and instructions were poor. Also their website needed a lot of work and it was a pain to request different podcasts to add. Sent it back. Dont know if the upgrade addressed these issues. Thanks.

The updates did address some of the complaints- They are still working on more updates as needed. The company is really listening to what people were asking about

@FarpointFarms But I agree with you that as a all in one radio, it's hard to beat.

I can’t understand why anyone would want a shortwave receiver or transceiver without sideband.
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 7 күн бұрын
For non-ham users (99.7% of users) SSB is not a feature they want or need. No commercial shortwave stations broadcast on sideband, nor do AM for FM stations. That said, for the .3% of us that complained, Choyong added full band coverage and SSB modes.

@@FarpointFarms I really love my sideband so I can listen to the hurricane net , those hams on 10 meters and freebanders north of 11 meters from my home in Michigan. Radio is a hobby of discovery and I don’t like being on the outside looking in.
