Agree! I use mainly my Snap-on Zeus & Autel Ultra. I wish Snap-on would put topology on their scan tools which I keep asking them when, but they say they are discussing it for the last 3 yrs. If I need topology, I use my Ultra. Each one has pros & cons & capabilities. The price of subscriptions & updates is getting insane. Autel Ultra was @$1600 for my last update. I bought my Zeus from the Rock & Roll Express truck when they first came out & I got a free 3 yr subscription with it b/c every time they came out with a new scan tool I upgraded to it plus I help out shops when they had questions or problems with theirs & my SO dealer asked me. I agree for DIYers just buy a code reader unless they plan on working on it themselves and understand PIDs & bi-directional controls and their capabilities. Great advice for Scanner Danner subscription b/c he has videos from Rosedale Tech when he was an instructor there. Best $11 to gain access to hundreds of in-classroom trainings! Great video!

It sounds like I made a good choice in scanners. I went with the TopDonAD500. I thought I had a problem with my pickup. Check engine light and ABS light came on, message on the dash said to service the electronic braking system, disabled my 4x4 and the steering wheel lacked some of the power steering. I decided to buy my own scan tool because, if I can diagnose the issue myself, I can fix it. Unfortunately my truck fixed itself before I got the scanner. It was a couple rainy days when it happened so some water must have got somewhere it shouldn't have. Oh and whatever happened was draining my battery. She sat for about a week, my friend jumped it and poof, lights were gone. I did hook it up to my truck to see what I can see and from the looks of it, this basic little scanner will deal with most of the issues I might face in the future as a DIYer. I didn't look at the stored code real close but it said something about losing communication with my ABS system. I will hook it up again and take a more thorough look later.

Can I start by saying I understand your frustration but I think it’s misplaced on the creator here. I too have been on this hunt before and it sucks. The short answer WAS in the first minute of the video: “All of them. “Techs would love to get a silver bullet in a scanner but it’s not the case. Also note that techs have a basic understanding from school but after that it’s the advanced training from experienced techs and hands on experience which gives them their knowledge. Being a tech is a lifelong education career and tomorrow there will be something new as the modern day vehicle changes daily. So to close my opinion on the matter I would say start with one and be prepared to buy another. It’s an expensive career and maximizing your profits on these flips will be key to ensuring your roi is worth the work and money. Good luck to you pal.

Thanks for sharing this. Probably my biggest takeaway is to have a really clear idea what features you need. Definitely disappointing to learn there's no all in one, and frankly I'd place the blame for that at the feet of auto manufacturers. There should be a reasonable access to any manufacturers vehicle information, and a global standard of how that information can be accessed by scan tools. Corporations locking up access to specific applications squashes competition and is very anti Right to Repair.

I replaced my Snap On Modis Ultra that is completely updated for the Topdon Phoenix Smart and it definitely does more than the Modis imo. I've noticed you said some will scan modules or look at them when they are not fitted. My Snap On when i would hit display fitted systems only it would actually skip some. Overall for me it's Topdon. Not saying Snap On is bad, but they're way over priced for anything. Especially for any add ons which topdon has so many that i believe can be used with all the Phoenix line. My Modis helped me through a lot of stuff, but change is inevitable and hopefully they'll take note of the other companies.

The biggest question I'm having with after market scan tools is the bidirectional capabilities. Im a GM technician and am thoroughly experienced in GDS2 and Tech2. I'm having a hard time trying to find how aftermarket compares to them. I'm not interested in programming, adas, key fobs. It's simply the Pids and bidirectional functions. So my questions are for example, does this brand and model generally (reguardeless of vehicle manufacturer) have 50% or 75% or 90% pids and bidirectional features as the oem tools? Is there a rescouce that answers this in a specific manner?

Nice video thank you I think for me what is lacking here is a ScanTool rating system. A system set to classify the type and level of system a ScanTool can access the cars systems and what it can pull from. It is hard to know which or what options you’ll need to work on a car until you have a car with an issue and have the ScanTool you purchased to then later find out that it doesn’t offer the options you need. When you try to compare ScanTool models, you have service types that it does and whether or not it offers bidirectional capabilities. But their should be a rating level system like, level 1 is your basics code reader, level 2 is code reader with the power to clear those codes, level 3 abilities to access other important parts of the cars system and run basic diagnostics and have bidirectional abilities, level 4, level 5, level 6 and so on. But the service manuals and tech data for the car should also reference these levels so that you are an aware that this repair will require a level 7 ScanTool. This would make it much easier to know what level tool is needed for the type of repair is required. Plus an important piece you didn’t mention about ScanTools are their price of renewals, this could be a big deal for DIYer’s since they might not be making lots of money working on many cars.
@Enrightauto2 ай бұрын
That’s because every vehicle, every scan tool and every brand are all different. So to make a scale like you are saying you would need every scan tool, every brand of car and to try every job which would be quite literally impossible sadly. But I love the idea

Was looking at the d10 I have heard of launch top don, and autel. In my general area there are predominately American pickups and SUV’s as well as a few higher lower end Europeans. 2 Chanel lab scope is mostly all used. Just looking for best model and brand without having to have 4 like my last few shops had. Well atleast not off rip.. thank you any info would be much appreciated. I do like the guided component tests that is a plus

Save your money. If you are starting as a Mobile diag tech or even mobile mechanic then either don’t take diag until you can afford a couple or save up the money before you start. You will most definitely run into issues with only having one. I would start with at least an autel and a snappy and a pass thru module
@danielmiller74398 ай бұрын
So would you choose a topdon our autell for transmission work
@Enrightauto8 ай бұрын
As mentioned in the video it depends on what you are working on and what exactly you are trying to do with it. There is no simple answer outside of buying the one you want and trying it out

Great video packed full of some very good insight. I have to say one of the best ive watched over the last few days on this topic. I ended up going with an OTOFIX PRO. seemed to be best bang for buck. Time will tell though.
@Enrightauto8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. I’ve heard good things about otofix. If I just had a bunch of disposable money I’d snag one to try out like the icon t8. I wast hoping it would be better than it was to share as a good option for people but it’s not
@TooljunkieDave52153 ай бұрын
is the icon just rebranded launch or autel? i have heard it was rebranded launch i think but i honestly have no clue. I am looking at buying one and right now topdon is looking pretty good to me. But honestly i have no clue which one i will buy yet. help me lol

Autologic and Opus drive pro do actually have programming through the scan tool itself.
@Enrightauto6 ай бұрын
They are using a jbox with them so it’s the pass thru modules but yes I understand what you are saying.
@justcompton6 ай бұрын
I’m not sure what a jbox is. All I know is I can go into CIP and select the module I want to code and it does it. That’s with both the autologic and with the drive pro.

I’d like to understand more about the subject but at this point I’m not sure how I would go about it. I’ve worked for a shop for 8 years using both Autologic and Opus drive pro so that’s the only method I’ve ever used to code a module or do anything scan tool related. I’m looking to get my own scan tool so I can step my game up with diagnostic. I can humble myself and accept help anyway I can get it. Thank you for responding to my comments.

I am trying to get a diagnostics and I know my code reader does not give enough information. I will give a code of CE001068 example and that can be 4 different things (made up code.). Also looking for one that I can change codes like for speed. It use to be a DHL Van max speed is 70mph not great for highway were speed limits are 75mph.

Most basic code readers will have live data on them. You will have to check the specific tool on whether it’s able to see that data on your Nissan. Honestly it’s just cheaper to pay a shop to service the transmission. It’s inexpensive and the intervals aren’t insane
