One of the most powerful scenes in the entire movie. Taraji deserves an Oscar for this scene alone!

AGREED! How did she NOT WIN? I only think sometimes the academy sees someone with so much talent- and they don't want them to win right away- because they want to see MORE. That's the only positive frame I can think of to see a "snub" in. Maybe BC she's still a relatively new star people are still just discovering? I don't know. She's a winner for sure.

I went and the movie with a friend yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon with a friend, and whereas I basically loved the whole movie THIS was the scene that did it for me. He had no concept how much she had to go through there JUST TO GO TO THE BATHROOM until she finally breaks and tells it to him like it is. Then that moment when the bathroom sign came down? OMG! Tears!

This is a great scene for sure. It was done to portray a common situation at this time in history. Costner's stunned reaction to, basically, "My time's being wasted because of WHAT???"... is timeless. True NASA back in the day. My dad was one of the first Native Americans promoted to management (UTC/NASA). At the exact time this movie takes place. William Gladden. NASA folks, being very scientifically literate, understood "race" doesn't actually exist in any of the Physical Sciences. Such as Biology.

Here's what Jim Bridenstine, one of the NASA directors, said about Katherine Johnson : “Katherine's work included key contributions to our early flights. Her calculations, such as those that helped Project Apollo's lunar lander synchronize with the command and service module orbiting the moon, have ensured the safe return, and the success of the mission " It should also be noted that at the very end of her career, after having made an eminent contribution to the development of the International Space Station, she was working on missions to Mars. 🌠
