Started doing this last year. Did exactly what you said guys do. So last year i started hunting the outskirts not going into the middle once. Some stands 40yards off the road. I saw more deer in 1 season then I have in 8 years before. I went back after the season to pull cards and the amount of beds in the middle that haven't been there was insane. This does work we saw more 2.5+ bucks last year then all the other years combined.(2.5yrs old in my area is a good buck)

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yea excited is an understatement. Between that and a huge amount of public land I hunt in my area I'm getting pumped. That property I hunt the out skirts is an east wind only maybe south wind do I don't hunt it much. When I switched to hunting the edge it was an almost instant payoff.

Yes it absolutely does work! I started doing this years back mostly off of Jeffs advice. When you use the wind, minimize what you touch and give the deer the majority of the property good things happen right away. I lost my farm lease and eas notified of such the day after i shot a nice 8 point last year. Fortunately i picked up 55 acres about a 1/3 a mile away that is as prime as prime gets. Its not a 200 acre farm like i lost but it couldnt be better positioned and its all woods surrounded by crops. The problem i have is we pretty much have to enter from the west. So ill be hunting the outskirts when the wind allows with maybe one set up in the middle for fire arms fun. It'll be very tricky but this place is across a field from 100 acres of woods that knowone hunts and it holds 100 deer on any given day and most of the neighborhood booners. Cell cam sent me a pic this morning of a 8 or 9 point thats gotta be close to 140 already That was a nice surprise! Tomm I'll be going down there to pick trees for stands maybe set a couple and do a couple of mock scrapes. Good luck to all and thanks Jeff for sharing your wisdom over the years. My hunting is much better for it!

Good stuff. As a public land hunter this video couldn't be more true!! I used to be the inside out guy and only seen does, fawns and young buck because at some point during entry I would cross the older wise bucks trail and be busted or blow out the whole area. Now I am using the old clear cut roads on the out side to access And hunting the clear cut edges where it meets mature timber finding the pinch points, travel corridors, funnels, inside corners and so on. I've made this change from watching your material. As a young buck I learned to swallow your pride and watch and learn what some folks have learned in a life time others can grab that knowledge and run with it and gain even more, then passing it on to future generations to come 🍻🦌

I try my best to control my scent without going all "John Eberhart". Winds seem to shift constantly here in mid Michigan probably due to lake effect. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but I've had much better success overall by being conscious of human scent and doing my best to minimize it. Access is huge and your video is spot on.

Really how you smell on stand isn't much of a concern...which is a good thing! But man so true the access to and from your stands is the real hunt killer. If I said scent was important on your stand it would be to sell a product that you can't live without 😉

I used to obsess about scent control. I've tried it all, including: various odorless detergents, body washes, showers at 3am, placing my clothes in bags with pine needles, scent elimination sprays, cover scents and more. Now, I laugh every time I hear how Rutgers University determined a particular scent control product was effective in eliminating human odor. My 45 years of deer hunting experience begs to differ. I suggest you save your money and avoid the sprays and contraptions. Hunt with the wind in your favor. It is the only foolproof way to beat a Buck's nose.

I don't believe if there is a mature downwind of you there is anything that you can do. However, your scent trail you leave when you travel to and from your stand you have nearly total control of. That's where many big buck dreams live or die...and most hunters fail.

It can't be stressed enough where access and cleared travel lanes will make you a better hunter. You drive that nail deep in several of your segments where in and out stealth pays dividends. You can do all the labor, have perfect food selections, great plots, and wind positioned stands but completing the formula without this components doesn't get you the winning answer. Thanks for all your insight as always.

I shower, wear rubber boots and spray down religiously. Even on back country public land hunts I always lug a bottle of spray, a travel size unscented soap, and a "Sea to Summit Pocket Shower". I observe many, many deer crossing my trail and my direct wind during a season and very few,if any, of them react. I truly believe that spraying down pant legs and boots eliminates trail scent to the point where it just does not alarm most deer. I often get mature buck pics on my cameras within hours of me being in a spot and you can tell they are totally relaxed. So many guys on youtube preaching that scent control is fake news and to 'just hunt the wind'. They are definitely wrong.

When on stand you have to hunt the wind...mature bucks and does down wind are nearly impossible to keep from smelling you. You have to hunt the wind or you will not find consistent success. But access scent is a different story. It can be nearly fully controlled.

As I totally agree with the scent web, I cannot clear access paths on the state owned land that I hunt as it is illegal to do any cutting. So I am either regulated to the most direct path thru whatever may be in my way or having to go way around the property and busting out deer with my scent. So I try to keep the wind in my face and make my way in.

Great info Jeff thank you! You and I think allot alike when it comes to scent control I never have been one much for using scent, I try to stay as clean as possible with clean cloths and spraying down my boots when I am l leaving the truck. I use an ozone closet to remove odor from my hunting cloths this also helps with wear and tear on my hunting cloths as I do not have to run them through the washing machine as much. I do not use an ozone machine on stand. From what I understand ozone kills bacteria. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

So hard to do some of this when you hunt an area of constantly shifting winds. I hunt river bottom's and no matter what the wind is doing it always shifts at least 10 time's a sit everytime you sit. I have had success by using the paved road to access stands that I have placed closer to the road that deer constantly cross and is commonly walked by people and dog's.

Great advice overall. Scent control products as a whole are a hoax. In 99 out of 100 scenarios, if you are near ground level, a downwind deer will smell you even when immersed in a swimming pool of the latest scent stuff. A lot of comments speak of areas with swirling winds. Your best option in those places is to hunt as high as you can.

You mentioned suburban areas. I hunt public land in the North east. The areas see alot of hiking, mountain biking and activity on trail systems. The deer seem to react "in the moment " , if the scent is hot , like when I get busted. I've had them come in on ,or cross my entry trail cautiously, but still go about their routine. 1. Is this common, do they " get used to people " ? 2. Can you use your entry scent as an advantage to control deer movement , and get them to go where you want ?

I'm convinced button bucks, & annoying snorty doe are attracted to human scent. When the wind goes wrong, they always seem to walk right to the base of my tree. Wind swirls constantly most places I hunt, like sitting around a campfire & the smoke always follows you. My remedy besides being scent free as reasonably possible, including spraying hydrogen peroxide into my mouth (actually kills bad breath, & may kill me eventually too), is to go as high as I can in every situation. I rarely get winded when extremely high in the tree.

Would you say Jeff, that if you historically know deer seem to almost always come from areas X, Y, Z from the neighbors' to pass through yours on the way to ag fields A, B, C all around, and by changing your entry and exit strategy, that eventually (given proper cover and food plot pit stops) they'd reside more centrally in yours and work their way out instead of passing through? That's kinda what I'm attempting, like re-training where they sleep and the way they move in daylight.

Your first spraying in the Spring is really important. The area should be sprayed when the weeds are only 8-10" high, to eliminate future weed debris. Hope this all helps! Hi Tex! Sounds like you have some great places to blow your scent and you have a great strategy! To me deer are blown out and s stand ruined by far the most, by leaving scent on the way in and out of your stand...or stand prep at the base. Also tucking your pants in is critical, as opposed to pushing that scent out of the bottom of your pants and saturating the ground with every step.

Hi Bob! That's a tough call...no real set %. I look at it that you have to have enough green to last the season - for example in MN I will have roughly 8-9 acres. And then if you take that next step to corn you have to have enough to last the season. I'm banking on 3.5 acres of corn in MN. Beans I rarely recommend...

I think you are somewhere in the middle and that is usually where the truth hides. There is one famous guy that hunts pressured public land in Wisconsin that doesn’t use any scent control and plays the wind 100%. He is very successful. Another famous guy hunts pressured public land in Michigan. He is all scent control all the time and ignores wind. He is also wildly successful. If that doesn’t prove it’s all anecdotal nothing does.

Thanks Rich. You have to analyze the way they hunt too. One hunts s lot of people areas with dozens of stand locations for first time sits where deer are largely used to humans...the other hunts a lot of random public island first time sits with hard access where laying a scent trail is no concern. Some hunters only know what they are used to in the limited areas they hunt. For example on many of my public land hunts I ignore scent control other than playing the wind - completely. If you hunt private land you can't ignore your scent trails for access or you will never find consistent success. Also, if you ignore all scent and just hunt for suburban areas with dozens of stand sites in areas where deer are used to human scent that is awesome! But if you take that tactic to real public land hunts in most states you will fail the majority of the time. Hunters need to adapt...most only practice what they know and hold that to be true in all situations. Some have scent routines to sell product....that's big in the hunting industry. You have to constantly learn...some just learn to their point of limited experience and don't understand why that strategy works because they do not hunt out of that box.

Whitetail Habitat Solutions I agree 100%. I would add one more important item. Deer are not the same even in a given area. They have personalities and individual life experiences. I have had multiple bucks in the same age class cross my entry trail in a given sit. Same wind and same thermals. Some will immediately spook and run. Some totally ignored it and some just became very alert but didn’t run. Hunting doesn’t have cookie cutter one size fits all answers. As you stated above you have to learn and adapt.

Thanks Jami! I personally use ElimiShield...seems like a great product from laundry detergent, core body form and to the field with their spray.

Why don't you use a ebike...eliminating all your scent trails.

I love the QuietKats we have...they are awesome. They would also be impossible on some of our steep climbs and descents we have to get to stand locations. In MN we can now use them a LOT and can't wait...but not every stand. I feel we also leave zero scent walking in in any trail we can ride our QuietKats into, but keeping our boots and legs clean, and making sure that we tuck our pants in. Also as far as teaching the concept...many folks can't afford an Ebike.

Unfortunate being smart creates a lot of luck and the fact you can virtually eliminate your scent too and from your scent is something consistently successful hunters follow. Don't fight good info to spite your self bud 😉 If. This channel teaches hunters how to be consistently successful thru hard work and hunting smart. My ex FIL said I was the luckiest hunter he knew. He has shot around 3 bucks in the past 40 years of hunting in the same location on PA public land I have shot 16 bucks in 20 seasons with 1/2 the time spent hunting. If you believe it is all about luck, you will not be a very successful.

Whitetail Habitat Solutions I don’t believe it’s all luck just 75% of it is I believe in scouting and doing your homework I just don’t believe in all the hoopla put into sent control the hunting industry will try and make people believe that you have to use certain products to be successful and do certain things all I’m saying is no matter what you will never beat a deers nose, you always leave sent no matter what you do. I know tones of guys who do nothing for sent control and shoot booners. If you live in the real world and have to work and don’t have your own property to make food plots then what can you do, you rely on scouting and luck bottom line.

@@fig81408 Guys that REALLY shoot "Booners" don't do it with foolish advise or blind stupidity, they use their knowledge of deer and hunt smart you should try it. you might get lucky and tag a "booner"

fixtrite phil so your telling me in the history of hunting know one ever shot a booner on pure luck you my friend are foolish to think that. I love hunting and everything that goes with it but watching hunting shows on tv and KZbin are cool but give people unrealistic exceptions of what hunting really is, then people get frustrated and give up, hunting is nothing more then pure luck even if you do your homework and do everything right it’s luck if your “target” deer happens to walk by. The only hunting show I follow is Red Arrow Kip tells it how it is
