The Switch will likely pass the PS4 and Gameboy by the end of 2022. Will it pass the DS and PS2?

There is a chance it could. Assuming the Switch has a slow decline from now until it’s successor launches (2024-2025), it should have a decent chance of passing the DS and PS2. If the Switch has a sharp decline or it’s successor is released 2023, then it will be almost impossible for it to pass the DS and the PS2. If the Switch would surpass the DS / PS2, it will probably happen late 2024 - mid 2025. In terms of software sales, the Switch should pass the DS, PS3 and Xbox 360 software lifetime. To reach the PS2 and PS4, it would require lots of games released even after its successor launches and some very strong legs considering the lifetime sales of those 2 systems are 1.5 - 1.6 billion units of software shipped. The Switch is currently around 863 million units of software shipped meaning that it is still a long way off those 2 systems. If the Switch were to pass the PS2 / PS4, it will probably happen 2027 - 2029 however it is very likely it will fall just short. In conclusion, the Switch has a higher chance of surpassing the PS2 / DS in hardware than surpassing the PS2 / PS4 in software however neither have a certain nor impossible chance of either event occurring. Yes the switch will pass the Game Boy and PS4 Based on VGChartz latest estimate, the switch is at 113.81 million, so it will due to the holidays coming up We’ll have to see about the ds and ps2

Both companies are the most influential in the video game industry. Sure, Atari (in the very early days), SEGA and Microsoft also have left big marks in the industry but both Sony and Nintendo have shaped the market since the late 80s. Now which one is better is up for personal taste more than anything. Imo, Nintendo for portability and Sony for home consoles.

I love how this theme music matches the shifts in the console wars. It always fits the moment somehow. The triumphant rise when a breakthrough console begins to conquer the market... ...the ominous danger when an upstart challenges the dominant console. The ebb & flow of it all. The roller coaster ride throughout the generations. Can't wait until Nintendo Switch avenges Wii U when it defeats Sony's PlayStation 4 by the end of this year. And definitely can't wait until Switch cancels the Sony 'Market Leader' narrative when it defeats the almighty PlayStation 2. Wonder what the music will sound like when that part of the video plays in the coming years later.

I love all those consoles, but even more underrated than the Wii U is the Dreamcast. It was originally going to have GTA III and Half-life II, but PS2 took them. Also, the fail of the saturn and 32X made many people not care for sega as much anymore. #justicefordreamcast

I’m very surprised about how poorly Xbox has done compared to Nintendo and PlayStation, I was originally expecting the Xbox one to surpass the PS3 and be a bit less than the Wii. Just makes me wonder how the Series X/PS5 will do

Xbox exited several Southeast Asian markets because they couldn't deal with the high piracy rates, so they decided they just won't bother to sell in those areas, even though it has a large population.

I am an old school gamer who owns a PS2 and DS myself, has revisited games from those consoles to see if I was blinded by nostalgia and has tried the Switch a few times and realizes how inferior it is. I know the PS2 has its own flaws like having only 2 controller ports, limited online play and inferior graphics compared to the 2001 XBOX and the gamecube. I know the PS2 is gonna be dethroned eventually but I feel like the Switch isn't a worthy successor. Before any Nintendo fan attacks me, I do have a few favourites, like Breath of the Wild, Sparks of hope, Kirby and the forgotten land, and Luigi's mansion 3. The problems i have with the Switch are the over-saturation of ports, remasters and remakes of old games not even including the multi-platformers (seriously there's already 4 games that end with Deluxe!) paid, faulty online service, messy e-Shop, Joy-con drift, not having folders until 5 years later, bland menu with plain background and no music, etc

I agree with your points, but you have to recognize that the main draw of the Switch, which is being succesful in being a portable/console hybrid with good cost-benefit, is something that no other console has, just like the Wii managed to sell like water despite its inferior specs and online features, and shovelware-filled library. Both had the right amount of casual appeal and novelty factor, while still having some excellent games and high local-multiplayer appeal.
