Part of it has to do with the fact that it was also a cheap DVD player, so a lot of people didn't buy it as a console. Also competition is much more evenly divided now then it was back then.

"cHeAp dVd pLaYeR" no. If you actually look at the games it had, it was a factory of classic games and fully backwards compatible. It also ate a lot of 360 market because the console was still insanely profitable after 2005 and cheaper than the 360. So you would see games normally releasing on the PS2, 360 and PC. Also the fact that it still has nearly 500 exclusive games (not counting cross gen) that never left the console to this day. Many third party developers developed exclusively for the PS2 alone. The only other console that comes close to that is the DS. It had everything going for it and anyone who didn't own a PS2 was missing out. However, the market today is much larger so if the Switch has a long lifespan it still has a chance to beat the PS2's record which in my opinion is still the best console.
