Stock settings are garbage? Let's figure out the best settings for these FPV cameras: Foxeer Monster & Foxeer Predator. And I'll compare them against my tuned Eagle 2 and Eagle 2 Pro, as well as a VERY GOOD traditional CCD camera, the Rotor Riot Runcam Swift 2.
Overall, the Predator really blew me away in this testing. With just a little tweaking, it turned out one of the best looking images I think I've ever seen from an FPV camera. But the Eagle's Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) still is unmatched. Meanwhile, the Monster continues to disappoint, even after finding the best possible settings that I could.

It hasn’t bothered me much because I usually just fly when it’s sunny out, but now you have me thinking I should try eagle 2 pro. I put a dab of gorrilla glue, hoping it will hold up. I'd prefer a solder point myself. But for overall quality, WOW! I'll deal with the dab of glue.

Joshua !!!!! i need your help! im sure other will benefit from the answer as well , but i cannot get the camera control to work for the Predator mini, ive only managed to unintentionally trigger the menu to come up but not with the stick command, are there specific beta-flight camera control values for the predator ? ive tried a 220ohm resistor 470ohm as well as adding not one but 2 100uF caps to OSD/GND still no go ! hope you can help thanks !! also im using the Omnibus F7 v2 with cam control connected to LED strip pin,

The predator looked frigging great. But bear in mind this comment is coming from someone that has been flying HS1177 (sony ccd 600TVL) cams now for almost 2 years. Although I did have a HS1189 back in the day and that was nice except for the jello. Very impressed with all these new cams & can't wait to give the Predator a try

Just got an eagle 2 pro and all I can say is WOW..and the 16:9 is freaking awesome..I've seen all the other cams that you've reviewed and the eagle 2 pro is the best I've seen. If anyone is using a swift2 or even the Swift RR edition y'all have to get an eagle 2 pro.. Will be putting eagle 2 pro on all my builds, untill something better comes out. Hey Joshua, at around 8 minutes you fiddle with the HUE slider. Small remark, HUE is generally not a "more" or "less" value, but a ranging slider. It's not, more HUE = better colors, it's that you change all Red, Blue and Green values together. By which I mean, you should've definitely tried going below 90 some more :P Not saying that going below 90 would've fixed your issue, just letting you know how that slider works :)

Yes, it's fine. In the past, racers have been happy with CCD cameras in the range of about 25 ms latency. Today's CMOS cameras are generally faster than that. Check RCSchim's reviews or Oscar Liang's reviews for good latency testing results. CMOS cameras are still slower than CCD cameras, but CMOS cameras are fast enough.

Would you suggest on buying a gopro hero 4 silver oder black (FPV Freestyle use). I want to use Superview and know that you like to Rekord at 2.7k which in Superview is only possible on the black with superview. On the other hand the silver does have a screen on the back. The price is the same for me.

I think the additional weight of the Black is a real liability compared to the Session. And the LCD screen is just one more thing to break. If you wanted to carry the weight of a Black, consider getting a 6, which has nice features like high-frame-rate 1080. But the Session 5 can do 2.7k Superview, just not at 60 fps. I would rather have a Session 5 than a Silver Black.

Great vid as usual. One thing I think worth adding, is that the Predator (along with the Runcam Sparrows) seems to have lower latency than the trusty old CCD cams, down to average ~15ms (according to RCSchim). Best of all worlds, no more trade off of latency v HDR! What's not to like!

No. You can check out my Eagle 2 Pro review ... I'm not sure if I showed the settings there. Basically all I do is turn sharpening down to 3 or 4. Other than that, it's stock.

Hello Bardwell, I was wondering if you can help me with the predator a tad. Just some simple stuff and need to pick your brain. I have a Foxeer Predator Mini and I am getting some weird scrolling hum bar it seems. I am thinking it is electrical noise. I have a 470um 25v cap on my power at the xt60 and was wondering if I added a 470uf 35v cap between the Tramp HV and the PDB battery pads if it would be beneficial to removing the noise/hum bar from my video feed. The quad seems to be good at the gyro so no noise issue there but the vid is just not where I would like it. I have some 5s builds that do not have noise at all and the same 470uf caps. Or maybe adding a 330uf cap between the power from the tramp hv to the camera? I don't know and would really like to hear you thoughts on this.

You can try adding a cap directly to the vTX but I would be looking at the way the power and ground are wired first. Make sure both camera and vTX are powered from the same source for example. That's where I'd start. If they are wired from a regulator, maybe it's flaky--try running them off of vBat (double check that they are rated for battery voltage first).

Just got my first 1200 tvl CMOS camera and it’s very impressive. The one I got is a Lumenier that’s on sale at getfpv. Very happy with performance but the lens is shit it comes with. 2.8mm I am ordering a2.1mm and will let you know

The foxeer Predator does really good at night and especially good in Cloudy conditions, been trying it here her few days it's an amazing camera. Just wish they had a wider field of you lens

The lens mount is a standard M12 size so you should be able to find some other lens that works. But the trial-and-error of finding a good one might be a little expensive.

Joshua, I also have the Swift 2 Rotor Riot edition and so far I don’t like the quality of the image specially the RR tune. I also have the Micro Swift V2 and the image in the micro looks better than my RR Cam which shouldn’t be. I even tried similar settings as the micro and a few others and no luck.. I’m getting ready to build another 5” unless my RR cam gets better I’ll probably try the Predator.

JB, Can you make a video comparing PAL & NTSC on the latest and greatest fpv cam. Are you on PAL or NTSC and why? I recently bought foxeer mini predator v4 and runcam phoenix oscar edition, they're both great cams but on default is PAL so I'm not getting my OSD since I have been in NTSC but that is not an issue. The thing is, somehow I feel like I'm getting a clearer image on PAL or its just my imagination. Cheers

When we see the DJI FPV HD quality and this regular low quality 5.8ghz (because racing needs the low latency) we see that we still miles away from a REALLY enjoyable racing FPV experience. I may get use to this, but it doesn't mean this is what I want. Hope to see some real improvements in future.

The latency on DJI is "as low as" 50 ms in 480p mode. That is the reason you are not seeing more digital FPV systems for racing and freestyle.

Man i have a camera i cannot figure out. It is a brand new runcam micro swift 2 and when i am inside it looks normal but when i go out to the sunlight the picture washes to white. Nothing i change seems to fix it. Any ideas?

It sounds like the auto shutter might not be working. Have you accidentally manually set the shutter speed?

Joshua Bardwell came out of the box like that. I didnt mess with settings till i found it had an issue. I just ended up replacing it and decided to play with it in hopes of maybe one day getting it to work.

What about the RunCam Eagle 2 Pro Lumenier Edition? It's advertised as being able to change the ratio. What are your thoughts?

+Tim Shows all Eagle can do that. The Lumenier is just the same camera in a white case. The problem is when you go to 4:3 the FOV is only 140 degrees. Not the best.

I think the Pro would definitely be my choice if I had 16:9 goggles. If you put the Pro into 4:3 mode, the FOV is narrower than I prefer. The Eagle 2 (non-Pro) doesn't have this issue, but the image isn't as good IMO. The Predator has a spectacular image and is 4:3, but isn't as WDR as the Eagle. Have I thoroughly confused the issue?

Please compare them at night, without the sun, just street lights (or at twilight of that's not possible, I only have time to fly at night where the only light source is street lights), you will be amazed by how good the eagle 2 (not pro, cos it's worse than the 2) performs, and I'm also interested in how would the foxeer cams do!

( i would prefer PAL).. but it looks very tempting to get live fpv and recording with the same camera.

A little disappointed that you didn't turn the color gain down below the factory default on the predator. That probably would have fixed the still over saturated image. The sky was still too blue and the grass too green, etc. I kept saying while watching, "turn the color gain down... Down... Down" and you never went there. I believe factory is 136,and you never tried any lower! I can virtually guarantee that you can make the image even better if you did that. Probably a tad more detail too because over saturation can lessen sharpness somewhat. Try it. I think you'll like it. I have an over 40 year photography background, so I know a bit about this... 🤔😉

Amen. I would go even further, and say that people who don't understand/know how to adjust a camera to it's environment, have no business reviewing them either. And if you do it on stock settings, you should be banned from the internett.. for an hour at least. Love this guy though:-)

I really liked the more saturated image personally. But maybe the over-saturation is causing the shadows to get crushed. I will give it a try. Part of the reason I never turned it down was because I was loving the image so much I didn't see it as a problem. FWIW, I have a photography background too. I spent about 10 years in my 20's doing amateur photography. So I understand a thing or two about image processing. But I don't know about TV cameras nearly as much. It's a bit of a struggle to translate what I did in Photoshop to what I do here.

The best cam is still the digital you are using. It would be awesome if someone made a new digital wireless protocol, lowlatency for full HD. Would you imagine racing with the image quality of the gopro 5. Now we are talking.

lol Teach the Mv2 is full of bugs but can get a great image. the std setting hold even if you switch to blc so you can up the brightness and the agc seem to me to be the wdr and wdr agc but im not a camera guy. lol i think all of these cams can get good image but you have to be ready to change it for the light conditions. lol i say the Mv1 has better night image though i fly at night with it more so then my NWv2 lol day flights with it are like alien planet.

Yeah I just don't know what to do about that. There is another time when I say, you can see individual shingles here vs. there where they are blown out, but on the DVR the distinction is not there. Still, I think the differences in the cameras still come through.

You probably already saw my video, but the difference between the fatshark dvr and just about anything else is so stark. I recorded my Eagle 2 footage on the fatshark and the predator on an eachine dvr and all the detail in the image is captured on the eachine dvr and lost on the fatshark DVR. The difference was so large, RunCam asked me to delete my video because it made the Eagle 2 "look bad" in comparison.

The Eagle 2 Pro edge shimmering thing is not "pixel binning". If you review the rest of the comments in the previous video where that claim was made, I explained that pixel binning is literally the opposite of what the OP of that comment thought it was. It is combining information from multiple sensor locations into one to downscale. Most large sensor digital cameras do it, and it makes the image look better, not worse. What he now would call his hypothesis is "pixel skipping", but I very much doubt that is happening because the Eagle 2 Pro's image is very noticeably high resolution. Pixel skipping would produce a much lower res image.

I have no idea what pixel binning is supposed to be but if the image was being downsized via nearest neighbor then it'd shimmer all over and not in any uniform way like it does along edges. Looks like it's doing some kind of down sampling that's averaging out the source picture.

Why would *any* type of down sampling affect only edges? Seems pretty clearly a sharpening artifact which is done in post processing.

The Eagle does have two sharpening settings, one for edges and one for "detail". FWIW. There definitely is a sharpening algorithm going on. If there is some kind of naive downsizing going on, it could exacerbate the effect of the sharpening artifacts.

Joshua, while that is certainly true, if there was a naive downsizing algo, the picture just wouldn't look as good as it does. The Eagle 2 Pro's visible detail is *noticeably* higher than most other cameras, matched only by the Predator.

I called it pixel binning because as a non native english speaker I thought of bin as a trash can, so pixel binning would mean throwing some of them away. The skipping which I believe to take place would not only affect edges, it would just get very very obious at every part of the image that has many details / high frequency components. If you skip pixels you are below the nyquist frequency to capture these details and you will introduce aliasing. I just think it uses a CMOS sensor of a regular high resolution digital camera or even smartphone, so it has to downscale. Why downscale it? Because it has to post process the image alot, I don't think the nice WDR comes right out of the sensor output. Just tell me one reason why it would look so weird if it would just downscale it like any other camera. The image with skipped pixels would still look extremely sharp if the resolution after skipping ist still high enough, and I think that is the case with the Eagle. But that is all just what I was thinking, and to me it reasonable

i dont think i would be too pissed if i only had the predator, i like the eagle 2pro more though, i think there is a combo of settings the predator would be hard to tell apart from the eagle, like when the blue haze disappeared when you lowered brightness??? i wouldnt have predicted that, but a combo of lower contrast lower saturation warmer hue, lower brightness i think might make it more like the eagle... but those controls seemed... soggy?... like nothing changed then everything changed. also the only reason to test the eagle 2 on a dull cloudy day is because its so bad, i think we just all want confirmation yeah! its supposed to be this bad. and thats when the swift's shine... first time i used the swift was on a dull dank scottish winters day...and the swift made it look like disney movie....brought a tear to my eye. but the eagle for some unknown reason is awful washed out and dark, but give it another hour or two till its actually dark and its wonderful again. ps. just fitted a vicdozia gorpo lens to my split and the image got quite a bit cooler... is there different levels of IR block? wtf.

I see cheap glass in the lenses of many of these cams, which is a reason for washed out images, color casts and such
