I like the eagle v2 16.9, it works well in low light conditions especially in the UK this time of year, you get an extra half hour play

Nice video. I have the Eagle 1 and a predator on its way. I am always buying the newest and greatest on the FPV camera stage. But let's be honest, the progress on these FPV cams are not massive. The HS1177 (and its siblings) came to the scene years ago and still many prefer that one to these new cmos cameras. I used to fly with the Effio-V 800TVL that was popular a while back and it had a great sharp picture with very nice colors until you and others told me the latency was too high.. ;) Still use them on my planes. Now that you are quitting your job and will be working only for us (we are all your bosses now and you our only employee..) I would find it interesting not only to see reviews and tutorials, but also to hear your toughts about what ways you think this great hobby will progress in the times to come. Like with cameras, how far into the horizon is HD the most common link on our quads and planes ? Keep up the excellent work ! :)

Anyone use either of these cameras in a desert environment? I'm using a Swift 2 and it's very difficult to get good ground detail. Thinking aboyt switching to CMOS but don't know which camera would work well in this environment (think twentynine palms, CA type of desert).

It would not be bad to do a camera test to how many lines, say, 1000-1200 tvl has a lot of delays in a real free flight without the theory or formula of how many milliseconds are late and the like. means a clean test in practice. Thanks

Gday Joshua & congratulations to moving to fulltime content provider, your already looking a lot more relaxed & I hope it works out for you... Meanwhile, Im torn over the Eagle2Pro & hoping you may be able to help... E2Pro has all the features Ive been waiting for in the Eagle line- but then they changed the minimum lux factor, in which case, for not a whole lot more, I could have the Split2 with the bonus of recording in HD, OR I could get the Eagle 2, OR possibly the new predator for covering both ends of the light I fly in..... Most of my flying is fixed-wing (for now) so I prefer 16:9 & most of my flying is either in over-bright Aussie mid-day sun or late sunset/early evening... Would you mind including the Split2 FPV feed & the Eagle2 in the next comparison in low-light conditions with the Eagle2 Pro & Predator please? Thank you very much in advance AND for your time & commitment to the hobby & community!

I'll see what I can do. Eagle 2 definitely does have much better low light sensitivity than the Pro and Split.

I have the Eagle 2 with a 2.5mm lens and I don’t notice the fish eye. I was going to ask what lens was used in the vid. You can’t go wrong with the Eagle. GREAT in low light!! I was flying last night and was able to get 4-5 pack in after the sun was down. Probably could have flown more if i had the batteries.

Is it a 16:9 eagle 1, or set to 16:9 if it's an eagle 2? Will look fisheye badly if it's in 4:3

There are several cameras intended for night flying but I'm not up on which is the best right now. Even the Eagle 2 might be a contender, because it has very good low light sensitivity.

Damn, Preadator Eagle 2 Pro, I keep going in circles and stll can't decide which one I like the most. The predator doesn't have that much shimering but the Eagle 2 Pro has so much detail. I was going for the Eagle 2 Pro because of the 16:9 aspect ratio, so thank you for throwing that criteria out of the windows by announcing a 16:9 predator....

Good timing JB, I'll be getting another camera soon. Flown the Eagle and Eagle 2 (non pro) but it suffers massive whiteout on fast flip/roll. Does the predator suffer the same problem?

To be honest I haven't flown it. But the hand-over-the-lens test had good results.

Hi I know you have more time now to help others maybe you can advise me :) Im having a problem with setting up my foxeer monster2, video looks like is over-sharp (lots of shimmering) specially on sunny days!, when i put sharpness down, then it looks very blurry and murky . I cant win :( Runcam suppose to have more pixelation and shimmering , but my friends runcams (watching them flying on my own goggles) looks less shimmering (Look at my last videos) Thanks in advance Merry Xmas!

I'm not sure about that one. When I tested my Monster v2, I tried turning up sharpening to see the effect but it never got over-sharpened looking, no shimmering, no nothing. But I did find the Monster to always look muddy and murky, and nothing fixed it. For that reason, I prefer the Eagle.

What you need to turn down in bright daylight is contrast first. Flatten it out to get the most dynamic range. Then play with color but contrast is far more important.

I think I showed in the original video that lowering contrast simply washed out the picture. It did not seem to improve dynamic range or shadow detail.

You d'man, Joshua. A question for you: My favourite camera was always the Eagle in its different editions, but after I tried my first CCD(Swift 2), I've never looked back. So much less lines and noise in the picture, which is the most important aspect to me when flying. You seem to love the CMOS cameras though, and my question is: Are you just using higher quality filters/dampening/balancing to get rid of the lines, or do you feel that it's a fair tradeoff, to get the better dynamic range and nicer image?

None of my setups have very much internal video noise. So all of the lines and etc. comes from RF breakup, which is the same between the dfiferent types of camera.

The non pro Eagle 2 is the best of that Cmos series(0,0001Lux), but I removed the IR filter from one of my Swift 2(0,01Lux) so that's now flyable with a full moon, but very uncomfortable without any additional IR light on a cloudy day. The best CCD camera for night flying is at this point probably the Night Wolf from Foxeer, which are IR sensitive out of the box.

I’ve been running the Runcam Swift 2 but after watching this I’m wondering if I should try out the Eagle 2 pro since it’s 16:9 and I’m using Commander goggles(which are native 16:9). Other than the 16:9 option how do you feel the Eagle 2 pro stacks up against the Swift 2?

I would take the Eagle 2 Pro all day. I love the Wide Dynamic Range and don't mind the digital noise too much. I really feel that CMOS cameras are the future. They still have a few quirks to work out, but they have SO MUCH more potential for a good looking image than CCD cameras like the Swift.

@Joshua Bardwell At your recommendation, I got the runcam eagle 2. I put it on my chameleon (also at your recommendation) and I just flew it today. I very much like it and I am very happy with it. Thank you for all the research you have done. However, I wouldn't say it blew me away. It is easily a lot better than my last camera, "Lumenier CM-650 Mini - 650TVL", which is basically like the runcam swift, but what I really want is an fpv camera that does 1080p and 120hz refresh rate :) Since that is not going to happen anytime soon, I guess I will keep using the eagle 2 :) What I did notice right away is that the shimmering effect is way way less in the goggles than on youtube. I have no idea why, but it is. In fact, when I first tried it, I could not see any shimmering at all. I even thought that maybe I had gotten the wrong camera. So I went into the settings and discovered the default setting has sharpen detail set to manual 1, and sharpen edge set to manual 1. I actually had to turn those up to 2 to see some shimmering. After some testing, I decided I liked edge and detail set to 3 the most. The next thing I noticed was that I was having an easier time flying, especially through gates and through trees. The image looked a bit more washed out than my ccd camera, which is a good thing. This means the wide dynamic range is working very very well. I definitely prefer this washed out image. My ccd camera generates super bright spots and super dark spots, making it hard to see. I spent a year tuning that ccd camera and I just couldn't get it to look as clear as the eagle 2. Now, mr steel flies with a ccd camera, and he is amazing. There is probably some reason he has chosen to use a ccd camera, but I dont know what it is. One hillarious side effect of the moire and shimmering artifacts is that it makes it easier to focus the lens. Just focus until you see the most pixelated lines, and its perfectly focused. So, again, thank you for the research and videos.

Yeah, the washed out image is an effect of the WDR but I feel like you get more details that way.

Jello testing would be great. As I keep saying a nice clean picture while walking around means nothing if the image Jellos under duress. The Eagle 2 seems to struggle with vibration.

Another big difference with these two cameras is latency. The predator has much lower latency. It's often said that most people probably will not notice, which I find weird because I can definitely feel the difference very clearly. I do a lot of high speed proximity flying so maybe thats why I notice? I would think racers would notice the difference clearly. I think the image that the eagle offers is really good if you can deal with the shimmery image but for me the latency makes the quad feel like crap and is a 100% deal breaker. I think it's just as noticeable (maybe more so) as the difference between PPM and SBUS. If you have the opportunity to fly the eagle and the predator side by side, I bet more advanced pilots will absolutely be able to tell the difference and would choose the predator hands down. I absolutely hate flying with an eagle. When I went from the eagle to the monster, it felt like I went from PPM and BLheli to SBUS and BLheli_S. If you felt no difference between PPM and SBUS or BLheli and BLheli_S that you will not notice a difference.

I just don't like these cmos cameras with there chromatic arbitration and fish bowl distortion on the lens , for me the one to pick is the runcam swift 2 RR edition or a normal swift 2 with generic gopro lens, they are a bit cheaper and give a more natural image

I noticed that too, and I tried to clean the smudges off, but they wouldn't come off no matter what I did. So it was trash the footage entirely or just live with it, and I went with live with it.
