Best Shaker For Any Song - 5 Tips That Work

The best shaker for any song is the one that's performed well, the right sound for the groove, and mixed well. While several top brands make great shakers, among other auxiliary percussion instruments, you can get the job done with a can and some sand if you get it to sound right for the song. This video shares some of my tips for laying down what I thinks is one of the most important parts of a groove -- the shaker (and tambourine).

If I'm playing outside, I have some homemade shakers that are just aluminum bottles filled with rice. They're loud so they work well in loud ensembles. I also bring them to drum circles. But if I'm inside or in a quieter setring. I find softer shakers tend to work better and the smaller ones I feel like I have better control with. I have yet to record with shakers but I feel like it will happen soon. I love the subtle differences between shakers and the versatility of the instrument. Also the simplicity of the instrument. Building different one's myself has been easy enough.

That’s awesome! The first time I played shaker on a recording was a glass Snapple bottle with some sand inside. The producer asked for shaker and I didn’t want to let anyone down.

Thanks for the tips! I recently got an inexpensive tamborine and a pair of plastic egg shakers so that the programmed drum kits I use in my music would have some "organic" accompaniment. I recognize that blue syncopation book from when I was learning the drums. That venture didn't pan out, which is why I use programmed drums.

Have you tried the Meinl or Toca caxixi? These are the shakers I use. kit.co/rhythmnotes/shakers-and-other-percussion ... the one in the video was a random find from a site called Lark in the Morning. But that site imports percussion instruments from various off brand sellers. Sometimes the products are good and sometimes not. I would trust Meinl or Toca through Amazon. ... What I like about my caxixi is that the gourd on the bottom is not too thick.
