Thank you for your wonderful channel . Just purchased the 9012 on your recommendation for my father in law who doesn't get out much anymore . He is on the 19th floor of a condo so thought this might help make the nights shorter for him and also bought him a spotting scope to watch the sea birds during the daylight hours. I listened when I was a kid but now thinking how to keep the mind active as I get ready to retire . Took my old General Electric world monitor 990 from 1965 out and started using it again. The show from Bejing tonight was very interesting . Turned off the TV and that was even better .

I have the Sony ICF-SW11. Although I bought it for around 40€ ($54 or so) and so would fall in another category for the price (the brand is paid), I find it to be a great radio, very easy to use and to tune and very natural in its reception. A single battery load (two AA's) lasts almost half a year, with a heavy usage. Really impressive. It was my first receiver out of the typical FM/MW bands and the one that got me interested in radio, so I like it a lot. Perhaps the audio quality is not its strong point (has a quite cheap speaker with a paper cone) but even that turns out to be an advantage in some cases, as it helps improving the intelligibility of some stations, specially when there's speech in the signal. Definitely a great little radio. For its characteristics, would fall in the same category than the Tecsun R9012.

Thank you for doing this series. I have tested some radio in the range and found the Coby CXCB92 to be a surprisingly good radio for $15 from Amazon. It includes a digital frequency readout. My shows #0094,0095 and 0096 are my reviews. Tom

I have Pilite KK-9 that is quite good for low price of 6,50€, had to limit the output to earphones with 220 ohm resistor in series as the TDA2822 amplifier way overdrived the small earphones. Works well for over a year now.

The Kchibo KK-9803 actually seem to be nearly identical to the OK. ORF 200 and ORF 210. At least they all use the same case. But i prefer the ORF 200 since it's all analog and no PLL radio like the ORF 210. They both use an LCD instead of a frequency Dial like the KK-9803. I got my ORF 200 back in 2015 or so i think and always loved how sensitive it is on AM and SW. And it did cost me like 10 euros back then. It was super cheap.

Thanks to your videos I've decided to buy R 9012. Can't wait to see how will it work. I do not have SW radio for a long time now. From what i have seem it is much much better on SW than dr 920.

Enjoyed the video. Wish the R9012 was as small as the Degen or the smaller Tecsun. Still may get it. I have the Kaito 1107 also known as the Degen 1107. The Kaito 1107 sells now on Amazon for $35. I believe it is an excellent radio for the money and may be a good one for your 25-$50 category. Has nice back lighting for the analog tuning dial and the digital alarm clock. A real strong point is excellent sound quality for its size especially on AM. It has good stable reception except for one weakness. If you live near a very strong AM station it will splatter on AM and shortwave at certain times of the day. The three step attenuation sometimes cures this.

I'd take the hit in performance and get the DR-920 just for the tuning dial and digital frequency counter. There is no way I can figure out a precise number for a frequency on those slider line dials. With a real number on the screen, you get to learn where stations are associated with their frequency, even if its not spot on... you can guess what its suppose to be (increments of 5). And there is just something immensely satisfying of spinning a dial with your finger tips and watching the numbers change, tuning up and down the spectrum hunting for something in the noise.

You are right a analog radio dial with needle is impossible to know what frequency you are tuned to

I have at present the Degen 1103 & Tecsun PL-880. I like both but don't like the volumn configuration on the 1103. I assume the Tecsun 680 is newer than the 880, but how do you compare the two. Edwin, Kansas City, MO.

Edwin Thoma yes the volume control is a little annoying on the 1103 I agree ... the 680 is newer ..

This is inherently the same model, but instead of the analog scale, digital is added. So there will be no difference, except that only 920 will have additional interference from the digital scale.

I am not surprised that the dsp chip radio is weird. I have several thousand dollars worth of radio equipment and my two portables with dsp are absolute dogs. The agc action with those chips is crappy to say the least. My little analog Kaito WRX911 blows those pieces of junk right out of the water. That Tecsun is really nice and similar to my Kaito except the Kaito doesn't cover 90 meters. Tecsun and Kaito are the same company I think anyway. My Kaito was 20 bucks brand new in the box. Worth every penny and more.
