The Wedge - Newport Beach - California - United States
What's happening at the Wedge? That's a question I get asked on a daily basis and the answer is pretty simple, show up and find out. The conditions at the Wedge are pretty fickle and believing the forecasts that really that aren't that reliable is a good way to waste your gas money.
This day was a perfect example of how the waves at the Wedge work. Stroll up at first light expecting to see waves crashing on the beach since the forecast was a solid 6' to 8'. The first sign the forecast was off was the fact that I didn't hear any the waves crashing from the street, a normal characteristic on a solid day. As I walked up the sand, there were a few people standing on the berm with no intentions of getting suited up, another bad sign. Sure enough, the Wedge was lake pacific at first light and remained that way for a couple hours.
The first signs of the Wedge waking up was a couple hours after first light and within 30 minutes some of the best skimboarders in the world and some of the best local surfers where in the water catching some of the best sider waves I've seen at the wedge in years! Here's a look at what happened that day with special thanks to the following athletes for putting on one heck of a show for the couple people that stuck around long enough to see the wedge come alive.
