I used to bring my board to school! At my school here in australia, we had surfing as an actual period for our physical education. We also had skateboarding, bmx, downhill mtb, dirtjump mtb and fishing as well as normal sports haha

Loved his breakdown, really trying to be realistic with people and not making it a joke. Brilliant mind at surfing (and other things). Notice also how he talks about his brother doing big wave surfing and others, but never mentions he won the Eddie Aikau big wave competition, one of the most prestigious competitions around, that rarely even happens because the waves have to be huge to call it. The year he won it was massive, and was the last time they've held it.

I've surfed for over 40 years. It's a great sport, but sometimes people underestimate the power of water and get into serious trouble. I'd done it myself, been sucked out to sea, finally made it back to shore after 10pm in the pitch dark.

Derek Ho died in July 2020. I wonder if this was recorded before that or if he just misspoke. He rode for Hurley until the beginning of this year and started his own company, so it looks like it was recorded after his death.

Fun fact my sister and I had a really great teacher in middle school that was a surfer so he let us skip class and levee our boards in the teacher longe!! Now I’m in high school and I’m entering my Junior year so my sister and I our homeschooling !! I can’t wait to be able to surf every day !!! :)

when i was 16 i was taking my lifeguard test in kailua and the instructor brought in northshore lifeguards for it . my guy hit me in the head and took me to the bottom and would not let go until i fought back and got loose and dragged him back up . when we surfaced he was smiling and gave me a shaka . those were fun times

@@ooklamoc4411 theres a spot where i learned to surf in waiks that now is strictly for begginers, like cant stand up beginners. They basically kicked the locals out of the surf spot with the 4 surf schools that paddle out there. Its kinda sad really. And waiks has a layer of sunscreen on the ocean that you can see and smell which is terrible. Learn elsewhere and then come.
