I have had my G2 for 6 months and have many cooks in now, and I have no regrets. It is an awesome smoker, and also probably the best smoker for a beginner if you have the budget for it.

Living in TX, if you have a brazos, no need to upgrade. The wood can be found locally at half the price. I get that it may be different up north but down south stick with what you got. Or buy a Franklin pit. Which you don’t need to do if you modified your brazos. :)

This is a comment I was hoping for. Assumed as much with the higher heat down there. And I buy wood locally as well from local tree companies, but like to give options for people who can’t. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching the video!

Thanks for the review, I am looking to upgrade my smoker from my Okie Joe and seriously considering this. Wish it had a tad more cooking space but I think for the most part it will fit my needs. Also note that some newer G2 models are shipping with deeper upper rack. I am impressed with all the features it has at that price point and wanting to achieve more consistent temps and easier fire management and all the reviews on this G2 definitely fit that bill. Only time I'd recommend buying a cheaper offset smoker is if you don't know what your getting into. Offset smokers while IMO make the best BBQ they are not for everyone. You have to enjoy it and becomes more a way of BBQ life. For me, nothing better than sitting out back with a beer doing yard work while smoking something.

I’ve been using OKJ smokers for the past month or so to create content and it’s night and day with this smoker. And I agree with you. I just know they’ll enjoy this much more as a beginner and want to continue smoking. Def a pricey initial investment though! I know so many people with cheaper smokers who turned away from it due to the amount of babysitting and whatnot. But like you said, if you love it, you love it! Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching. Cheers brother!

@@fattybuttsbbq Great point in that if they started off with a higher quality smoker they are more likely to enjoy more. Very glad to hear you don't have to babysit as much and have those wild temp swings that is really what I am after. Thanks so much, take care!

How would you compare the G2 vs the Kamado Joe? I know they are different animals,however I'm curious because many people smoke on the Kamado Joe. I agree about less expensive smokers,they seem to be really hit or miss and can confuse people who are new to smoking meat. Some people get good ones,I got a bad one and modded the heck out of it and it still sucks.
@fattybuttsbbq
@fattybuttsbbq 5 ай бұрын
Honestly, if it’s your main grill I’d go with the Kamado Joe. I use it 90% of the time and replaced all my other grills and pellet smokers with a big Joe 3 and classic 3. However you still won’t beat an offset using all wood for smoking in my opinion. I’d get the offset unless you need an everyday grill/smoker.

I really like the looks (and price point) of the G2 pit; however, it appears capacity could be an issue. I've just started watching the vids, but all of them show one (large) piece of meat being cooked at a time. I'm guessing 2 briskets or pork butts might be challenging due to the hot spot locations? I'd appreciate hearing from those with the G2. Thank you.
@fattybuttsbbq
@fattybuttsbbq 6 ай бұрын
It's definitely not a large area, but it can hold a decent amount. I would count the top rack out, but I usually do on offsets and save them for higher heat smoking. I have a video on my channel i just did with some beef back ribs if you want to see how they fit.

@@fattybuttsbbq - Thank you for taking time to reply. I appreciate it. I was looking at a 1975 wagon, which I can afford, but I don't want to spend $5K on an offset at the moment. I've been cooking for a long time; however, I don't currently own an offset, so whatever I buy is the maiden voyage. The G2 seems like a good compromise to see if offset cooking is something I'll want to do more of in the future.

Since you mentioned the ok joe longhorn, how does the g2 compare to the longhorn size wise inside the cooking chamber?
@fattybuttsbbq
@fattybuttsbbq 5 ай бұрын
The OKJ definitely has more cooking space (couple inches each way), but I'd say you're only going to get to use most of it on the reverse flow model or if you get third party baffle plates. You do get the upper grate on the G2, but there's not much room there and the temp will be much higher. I do feel like you get more "usable" space on the G2 though.
@NuarStanger
@NuarStanger 5 ай бұрын
@@fattybuttsbbq thank you for the quick reply. That's what I was worried about. The G2 looks very small. I have a OKJoe Highland and I'm not happy with the cook chamber size. I like the smoker, but I'd like more room in there. Guess the g2 is not a good option for me.

@@NuarStanger Here's a breakdown of some main grate sizes between popular smokers I put together. This might help! OKJ Longhorn Grate: 40” x 19” Mill Scale 94 Gallon Grate: 36.5” x 22.5” (The water pan holder is 22.5 long and 8.75 wide. It is 2.25 inches higher than the grate.) I think this is a great one to choose based on your current lineup! And this is actually the Canon R5, but to be honest I’m switching back to the Sony A7Siii this week. Haha. The canon is great but there’s some things I just like about the Sony better for videos like the object tracking (non humans, animals, etc).

What about a 16 inch Classic Horizon? About $800 cheaper. Non insulated firebox though.
@fattybuttsbbq
@fattybuttsbbq 4 ай бұрын
I've never used it but does look pretty nice. You lose the top rack and the insulated firebox, which is probably the game changer for this smoker. I think the smoke collector and stack on the g2 might perform a bit better but that's just a guess. Prob can't go wrong for the price though when comparing to the OKJ Longhorn or similar smokers. The brazos would prob be a true competitor to the horizon though.
@agordon7369
@agordon7369 6 ай бұрын
I would also assume that it would take less charcoal and would throughout the cook due to the insulated box and being able to maintain a more consistent temp, so pay for the quality and therefore less hassle and with time save money on your fuel source.
