I just recently purchased old country G2. I have been cooking on a box store offset for years. I live in Michigan and the weather is unbearable in the winter sometimes. I don’t have the luxury of smoking inside or in an enclosure out of the elements. It’s an affordable smoker in a sense that it’s designed for a household cooking. For those who think it’s expensive cooker, checkout Franklin bbq pit price and compare. This is a cheaper alternative with the same thickness of metal. Yes , the brazos give little cooking space, but the other features make up the difference. If I am cooking for a lot of people, I have few other smokers that I use that require little less attention while still managing fire in an offset. Before purchasing any pit figuring out your space and weather conditions you’re going to be cooking in is a key to making the right decision. Thanks for the video.. I plan to cook without the baffle plates and the deflector.

All good tips, and you're right. It's got the features without hitting that Franklin price point, which I think is mainly paying for a name at that point. I gotta go to Troy, MI in late January. Can't wait to freeze to death!!
@BrianF.1969 Жыл бұрын
The Franklin is most all 1/4" steel. The g2 is only 1/4" at the main/bottom chamber. The sides and lid is 3/16" steel on the G2. Still a nice pit though. Hope it serves you well. The Franklin is very expensive.

Good overview on this smoker! I ordered and received mind already, seasoned it already (I am impressed with how the insulated fire box reduced wood consumption, maybe 35 to 40% and longer burn times before adding wood up to 50%) There is a learning curve on managing your fire - very easy to add to much wood. I would have ordered the Lonestar 20x42 offset (even their 20x36 model has allot more grate space than the G2) however Academy had a 20% off discount before xmas and since our Florida home is close to a store no frt. cost. This smoker will end up in our Ohio home so the 20% off and no shipping worked and made up for the lack of features and poorer quality compared to Lonestar models. We plan to sell the Ohio home in 4 to 6 years so I wanted a less expensive offset smoker in Ohio. I have Lonestar 24x48 offset, and one of their amazing pellet smokers (even allow you to burn a 50/50 mix of wood chips) in Florida.
@alejandrosantos6774 Жыл бұрын
“Reduced wood consumption, maybe 35 to 40% and longer burn times before adding wood up to 50%” are nice features, which will get better with practice. They save money and free up time. Out of curiosity, Is this compared to the $4,195.00 24” x 48 (1/4” firebox) Lone Star Offset Smoker? or Is this compared to the $4,890.00 24” x 48 (1/4” firebox) Lone Star Offset Smoker? Plus, shipping.
@GaryBenaszeski Жыл бұрын
no I used the lonestar 20x36 which is 400 to 500 more than the G2. They use 3/16 inch steel for the cook chamber and 1/4 inch for the fire box. jump on their website and look at their cook chamber, interesting design, a 20 inch smoker with an lower grate that is 20 1/2 inch wide. The LSG has allot more cooking space along with other standard features that nice to haves. I wanted a more competitive offset for the Ohio home so along with the 20% off and no frt, cost on the G2 I ended up with the G2 ( frt. on a 500 lb smoker would run about $500 to Ohio, if there was no frt. on the lonestar I would have gone with the lonestar) This is the first time I used an insulated firebox, if your buying all your wood over time this will be a fair amount of savings there. I am lucky to have a fair amount of trees on both of my properties so I make my own smoking wood. Which will be nice to cut to size my own splits, I have some 12 inch long wood which is good but the perfect splits could be 8 to 10 inch long!@@alejandrosantos6774

The reason why the middle/upper thermometer port is important is because smokers that have a baffle can give very different temp readings in the middle vs the two ends. I'm thinking about getting one of these, and if I do, I'll be removing any baffles and putting a thermometer in all three ports.
@FattysFeasts9 ай бұрын
True, but you can also learn how hot that upper area is by performing tests and knowing what the temp will be based off your bottom probes. That's also the best way to learn whether the baffles are necessary, especially on a smoker as small as this one. Plus, if you're not going to use the top shelf, it's not as important.

People keep saying it's all 1/4" steel. It's not. The only 1/4" steel is the bottom/main chamber and maybe the inside firebox liner. The lid and sides are 3/16" and the outside liner of the fire box may be 1/8" from what I could tell. I didn't spend any time looking at that. It's still a nice pit but I'd like it to be the same length as the Brazos. I don't own a Brazos or any other offset at the moment but wouldn't mind having one.

I understand that I may not have made that clear enough in my first post. The only thing the Blue has in common with the Patriot trailer package is the size of the cooking chamber and maybe the fire box. The patriot pits are a work of art. It is easy to see Jason takes a great deal of pride in his builds.

I'm not sure if we can even come close to comparing the Blue and the Patriot, for many reasons. However, even though I've never heard of them until publishing this video, I am curious how they are making them for so cheap. Everyone is struggling to get material at a reasonable price, and most smokers that look like they make sell for $3500 plus. That just makes me a bit concerned about corners that may be cut. Do you own one and could tell me more?

@@FattysFeasts No I don't own a Blue Smoke smoker. I had a local guy here in California build one for me. On Big Phil's web page (the blue smoke part) he says the pipes are blemished, which could be the reason for the cheaper price.

No way that thing is worth $1800. Maybe $999.99 at most

Durability and Longevity: remember: durability of an insulated firebox, will withstand prolonged use and exposure to high temperatures. Compare this to a non-insulated 1/4" firebox, where potential issues such as warping or heat loss over time may occur.

Cheap? Please look for custom smoker builders. You can do better than this for cheaper.
