18 BRANDS TESTED: Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita Gold, Makita, Ryobi, Hart, ARES, Neiko, Irwin, TEMO, Bosch, Performax, Torquesmith, Hercules, Hyper Tough, Warrior, Bauer, and Masterforce. In the first test, socket adapters tested for maximum strength until failure. In the second test, socket adapters are used on an impact wrench and maximum clamp load force is measured. Do socket adapters with “impact zones” perform better than those without impact zones? Do socket adapters with longer impact zones reduce “impact” force that’s delivered to the fastener? Let’s find out! No sponsors on the Project Farm channel. It's all about unbiased testing. Hope you find this video helpful.

It's not just KZbin, as many KZbin channels' content varies from person to person. PF content is legitimately no exception and is highly useful with testing, legitimate data, and time efficiency of each video he puts out. He dedicated his channel from experience and whatever gets him started from his heart, he'll put it out there. He saved a lot of industrial workers time so that they can get the best tools to work with by the various tests and various tools that PF utilized with in comparison to each brand. If it wasn't for this channel, I would somewhat be buying the average tools and others, but I seek for the best tools.

PSA time: Timely video for me as I recently had a Milwaukee 1/2" adapter (not one that you tested in this video) shatter like a couple of those tested in this video. It was on the end of a Dewalt impact and I was setting larger (36mm) nuts/bolts for a beefy home workout rig I was assembling. I spent an entire day fastening dozens of nut/bolt combos w/o any signs of a problem. Then, the next day, I grabbed my 36mm socket and popped it onto the Milwaukee adapter once again and pulled the trigger to make sure everything was seated. As I did this, the adapter snapped against the resistance of the palm of my hand holding the socket (read: not much) in an explosive way like a couple of those tested in this video. Because of how I was holding the larger socket with my off-hand & was pressing the drill towards the socket, this jagged part of the adapter basically tore into my hand for a couple of rotations at the base of where my left trigger finger meets my hand. Due to the sharp and jagged nature of the failure point it chunked up a smaller section of that area down to the bone. Needless to say this was a painful mess that took me out of commission for a while. It's been a couple of months now and the area is still pinkish in color and is obviously still repairing and susceptible to damage. Moral: be VERY careful of using these sorts of adapters. I'm not sure the thinner gloves I normally wear would have saved me but it likely could have helped. I would suggest wearing some durable gloves whenever you're using these types of adapters because even if you feel you're using them in a relatively safe manner will below their rated limits... bad things can happen. Be careful folks.

@@richardlapoint1845 when you're younger you always hear the safety warnings from the old farts and just think that they're being crazy. well now I'm the old fart passing along the sage wisdom because I never would have guessed that this part could have failed from the stress (or complete lack thereof) it was under nor could I have guessed the manner in which it failed. I'm almost always the first guy to glove up and wear eye and ear pro. Almost. This was one of those rare occasions where I didn't and I learned my lesson in a painful way. I'm just glad it wasn't worse as it certainly could have been. Hoping to pass this experience along so that others don't have to share in a similar pain to learn the same lesson.

i had a cheap makita for over ten years and it finally gave out once i got into transmission work. ATF fluid is incredibly detrimental to the internals. Dont get em wet! i got a fairly cheap $20 milwaukee set with a phillips, 3/8 adapter and a bunch of other stuff i rarely used. the bit set outlasted my impact and i still use it today. anyway for a short while i used some harbor freight bits, the little black sockets ones. they were really convenient and never broke on me but wore down around the edges of the adapter. i think this helped wear out the driver too cuz i had issues with my overly expensive matco bit set later on. the cheap sets are good 'get me by' tools but dont use them more than a few months, they will wear your tools down.

I use Milwaukee shockwave adapters on automotive applications and it holds up very well, what I notice it is on the overall stronger non impact adapters twist over time, but the shock absorbent part takes the impact and prevents the adapter from twisting, delivering accurate torque every time rather than some lost on the twisting, I’m a year strong on a single adapter set with daily use lol
@0bloodshot0
@0bloodshot0 3 жыл бұрын
no its not. you would need a longer test setup with less torque to show the benifit of them (fatique testing). the "torsion zones " are trade off, you sac maximum torque for a longer lifespan at lower torques. this setup is maximum torsion test so of cause the one with the bigger diameter will perform a lot better: tau = 4*(F*r)/(pi *r^3) so if you need a adapter to remove huge rusted bolts with a tool to small for the job take a adapter with a big diameter, otherwise a sufficent one with a "torsion zone" will perform better in the long run

My boss and I were using our respective impact drivers to pull some lag bolts out of an 8x12 beam. I was using my DeWalt impact driver with a 3/8" DeWalt socket adapter. The socket adapter broke right where it narrows to lock into the tool, but my boss's Milwaukee adapter got the job done no problem in the same driver. In due fairness I got my socket adapter as part of a really big kit and all of the bits seem pretty cheaply made by comparison to what was put on display here.

I toiled for months on buying either a sub compact cordless impact driver or impact wrench. I finally decided on a 3/8" impact wrench due to the fact I'm mostly using it on my car where every inch counts to get it into tight spaces. If I had purchased an impact driver, I would then need to install the appropriate 3/8" or 1/2" socket adapter which would make the tool longer, thus defeating the whole purpose of having a sub compact tool. If I ever wanted to use the impact wrench as a driver, there are tons of adapters out there to turn convert it into a Hex Drive. Most home projects are not nearly as tight as in the engine bay of a car. I keep trying to find something wrong with this logic, but it continues to hold up under my own scrutiny. Love to hear other's thoughts on this tho.

@LordOfSilense
@LordOfSilense 3 жыл бұрын
It’s for safety. Impact tools are meant do be able to self destruct safely. If you look at the non-impact tools failing you can see metal shards and fragments getting launched out- that’s dangerous. Whereas all of the impact sockets always fail cleanly at the shock absorbing zone.

Wowza, words escape me. Due to having worked in big box retail for 7 years (and counting), I find that it's easy to get caught up in the marketing hype. I really appreciate the reality check that you bring to the table with real life testing. It's a little bit sad to see how poorly milwaukee ended up performing considering how well their power tools tend to perform when you test them. Perhaps there's a little bit too much capitalism involved and they are slapping their brand onto the lowest bidder not the top performer when it comes to third party manufacturing.

What's the point of putting an "impact absorption zone" on an impact tool? Completely defeats the purpose. I want the impact imparted on the work through the tool, not absorbed!

It is supposed to reduce the very high torque spikes you get from the impact. It is done to protect your fastener and bit.
@jonnda

I think this absorbing zone is meant for protection of Phillips screws and bits, but is pointless for larger hex head fasteners.
@nefariousyawn
@nefariousyawn 3 жыл бұрын
Another thought, the "impact zone" is actually designed to be the point of failure, so the bit doesn't break off inside the tool. Maybe these adapters are a considered to be consumables, replaced frequently as they break? Either way, I'll probably go with the most durable adapter with a thick shank because the whole "impact absorption zone" seems like silly marketing to make the design look more sexy and require brand loyalists to buy more overpriced adapters.
@jonnda
@jonnda 3 жыл бұрын

The only issue with this testing method is I find most of my adapters break from metal fatigue (twisting in reverse and forward) which would lead me to think the adapters need to be harder steel, but that would also make them more brittle and prone the snapping from the first test. The second test was quite useful but I dont think it gave enough information to know which would hold up the best on its own.

The impact rated adapters are breaking at a lower torque on average because they are made out of harder alloys that have more memory than the non impact rated adapters. They are made to be rapidly impact torqued, not constantly twisted in circles until they crack. If you impact with the non impact rated adapters they end up getting a bit of a twist in them over time. And actually break easier on the impact driver. Speaking from experience. Essentially the impact rated adapters are made to only be torqued for very short strong bursts and then snap back after a very minimal amount of flex
