So, the sodium reacts with the water to create sodium hydroxide and hydrogen - Na+H²O = NaOH+H. The reaction you see is because of the energy created when the sodium breaks the hydrogen's bond with oxygen, to replace with its own sodium atoms, releasing the hydrogen. The explosion is because the heat of the reaction ignites the hydrogen that is released

Why did he put HCl into the water if the reaction would have occurred without it. I think salt would also be in the end product if im not mistaken but im not sure

@jaredsuffet5610 I think the HCl was just used for visualizing how an indicator changed color regarding the pH. The indicator (phenolphthalein I believe) will change the color of the liquid if the pH of the liquid is 8.3 - 10 (base) So nothing will happen if you put the indicator into water (ph=7), however, after Na+ reacts with H2O, the products are hydrogen gas and NaOH, and NaOH is one of the strong bases The pH of the liquid from water (ph7) changed to the NaOH (base), which is why you can see the color change Please let me know if I made any mistake and hope this helps!

@@coldtone9419 what if sodium metal is dipped in acidic water or HCL. Will it also react the same ?
