The video shows all about the best soil mix for adenium and makes you know the 3 Secrets and the unseen component in the soil mix.
In the soil mix for adenium there is a very critical component that remain unseen to us. And so we often pay no attention to this component of our potting media for adeniums. But if we clearly know the 3 secrets and the unseen component, we can prepare the best soil mix for our adenium plants ourselves.
In this video, I`ll first discuss the 3 secrets and then I`ll discuss about the unseen component. Hence it`s going to be a very important video for my adenium lover friends. It`s also going to be a more theoretical video than practical one. It requires a little patience and attention.
Secret No. 1 Moisture Retention
Adeniums love adequate quantity of moisture retention in the media for the best growth. But that does not mean that the whole media is prepared with only moisture retentive components. Such media appears deadly to adeniums.
Some facts:
1.Adeniums` requirement of moisture in the media changes with the change of weather, seasons and the plant`s life cycle , such as (a) adeniums need a little or no moisture in damp cold weather and in winter.(b) It needs adequate moisture in growing season i.e. spring and summer.
2. An well established plant needs much water.
3. A newly potted desert rose needs less water.
4. A small plant in a small pot needs frequent watering.
5. A small plant in a large pot needs less frequent watering.
6. The media components are divided into two types: moisture retaining and non-retaining.
7. Media with much moisture retentive components requires less frequent watering and the reverse is also true. Now the fact is that it`s impossible to change the media with the change weather etc. So better to take a middle way i.e. to keep a 50:50 balance between the moisture retaining and non retaining components and to change our watering schedule.
Some Moisture Retaining components are :
coco-peat , vermiculite, perlite, cattle manure, vermicompost, cow dung compost, top soil
Some Non- retaining Components are : sand grit, river sand, stone chips,
Secret No. 2 Drainage Adeniums thrive well in well draining media.
We use 50 - 70 % draining components in our ideal media. Draining components are : stone chips, sand grit, perlite, vermiculite, river sand etc.
Secret No, 3. Nutrient
Nutrient in the media is a very potential factor. Among the components listed in this video top soil, cattle manure, vermicompost, cow dung compost are the sources of nutrients. We`ll take 20%-30 % of such components.
No.4 The Unseen Component It`s the most critical component in the potting media for adeniums. We can`t see it but it`s very important.
It`s the air in the media. We can`t add this component to our media but our judicious selection of the components can make the media well aerated.
Let`s consider some facts :
(a) The gap between the two particles of the components in the media holds the air.
(b) The larger the particle size is the larger the gap holding more air.
(c) But increasing air in the media by increasing particle size declines
water holding capacity.
(d) If the particle sizes are different the smaller particles fill the gap
between the larger particles and thus reduce aeration.
(e) So we should sieve away the fine particles and keep the particle size as close to each other as possible. Keep in mind that adeniums thrive the best in well aerated yet moisture retentive, well draining media that slowly releases micro and macro nutrients.
Finally two sample soil mixes are shown in the video for example.

Hello 1.Please guide that we should prune it in sept/oct or not? 2. How to care in very low temperature like 3/5 degree centigrade ? Thanks
@dotbasecamp
@dotbasecamp 3 жыл бұрын
1.Sept / October is not the ideal time of pruning. Still you can do it if urgently necessary. Though I don`t know the climatic condition at your place / how far is winter etc. 2. Adenium can tolerate near-freezing temperatures provided the plant is completely dry and in dormancy, though there is risk of root-rot and damage of branch tips below 10° Celsius. But if there is chances of the temperature falls near 3/5 Dc . Stop watering well ahead so that leaves drop and the plants go in dormancy then bring the plants indoor and place in south or west facing window. You may cover the plants to keep the temperature slightly high.
