Best SONY FX3 Run and Gun Settings for Beginners

In this video, I step through the steps I use to set up my Sony FX3 to recall the most used settings for Run and Gun type situations. Configuring the memory recall buttons allows me to quickly change the camera to my most frequently used frame rates and shutter speeds which follow the 180-degree shutter rule.
Please Note I cover File Format, Frame Rate, White Balance, and shutter speed mainly for the settings. When you configure the memory recall buttons you can go totally wild and configure so much more. My goal was to show you how to get the heavy lifting or most common settings configured and you can tweak the settings more for each use case.

@@markthecre8torI don't think its too advance, That's pretty much I have my FX3 setup except for I only shoot SL3 in M3 and at 4K 24. I rarely use 120fps and if need it while shooting from M2 I just make the necessary changes.

Im trying to bridge the gap of photo and real estate video... It's where I need to go , to be a full service one stop shop for my clients... I've been shooting the a7siii but Sony is not gonna update the firmware with the pre loaded lut option which sucks ... I use the gamma display assist but it doesn't compare to the phantom lut which is use to grade all my footage ... I do have a monitor that I can attach to my gimbal, but I've noticed my gimbal movements are not as smooth because it's kinda of hard to watch the monitor and be fluid staying in straight lines walking... But I dig your channel man .. I want to get the FX3 but I'm sure when I do they will announce the fx3ii 😝

My day job is in the tech space and I understand the complexities of releasing software from the vendor and customer perspective so I get to see both sides of it. Man, please let me know if you sort out the monitor and gimbal setup, my tired old eyes need a larger monitor but I struggled and had the same issues you mentioned when trying to add the monitor to the gimbal setup. Hey RossCorbett, Thanks for reaching out. This is a really good question and can be very complex and I will try and make time to create a video on the topic. If you do NOT have time to switch focus areas and the subject is human I always default to Zone focus area. The reason why is the camera sets a priority on eye autofocus first, and uses face detection as a backup when it can't detect the eye. I use zone all the time for human subjects, but when it comes to non-human subjects it becomes more complex and I will need to get a video up to explain why I use expandable spot instead of zone.

My Dude, Thanks for the feedback. I am shooting in Log, or Cine EI which is slog-3. But I do at times use the picture profiles for off the wall type stuff. Slog 3 should cover almost all the bases, but if you want to use the picture profiles they are still available on the fx3. Let me know if if you want the steps to find them. Im new to the camera but any idea why the fps isn’t 60 120 etc. but is 59.8 or whatever. Is there a way to change that or is that normal?

Hello NickRichtv, thanks for reaching out. The issue you just described was called out by many. With the FX3 firmware versions before 3.0 the camera would list the frame rates in whole numbers IE 24p, 30p, 60p and 120p but if you looked closely after adding the recorded files to you editing software it read 23.98, 29.7, 59.94 and 119.88. This was because the earlier firmware showed us a whole number but it was really recording in the other. Sony fixed this in firmware version 3.0 but instead of going to the whole numbers they just made sure the camera showed the user what the frame rate really was vs rounding up. You can get true 24P but that will require you to switch to File Format XAVS S-I DCI 4K. Thanks Mark! Super helpful but not sure that these settings are for beginners. For beginners, I would not suggest they start with S-LOG but rather shoot with no PP or use S-Cinetone. I did that for a long time and the quality was still amazing.

Thanks for the feedback, I might have jumped the gun a little bit and assumed anyone that purchased the fx3 or even the fx30 would leverage the cine ei and slog-3. Any hoot you live and you learn and your feedback is greatly appreciated. I guess my next video will be how to color grade slog-3 in 30 seconds. 🤣🤣 I used to be intimidated with color grading, it's not difficult at all to be honest. Also i would suspect a lot of beginners are using purchased LUTS. I might consider updating the description to use no picture profile versus s-log 3 for people that do not want to color grade.

Hello Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately, you cannot set a custom button for a memory recall setting on the Sony FX3. You can only use the virtual selections available when pressing the mode button then select MR1-MR3. This holds true for the Sony A7IV as well, you cannot set a memory recall button different then the dial setting of 1-3.

absolutely, I have an ND filter on the front of my lens 90% of the time and a mist filter the other 10%. These settings can be tweaked but will cover a ton of situations while getting started.

What are your thoughts on 7ACII and ACR?

I have always been curious about the Sony A7C line and thought they were more focused on photography but more on the minimalist side. The smaller form factor and the full-frame sensor are how I came to that conclusion. The biggest change I see compared to the older model are sensor goes from 25.3 megapixels to 34.1 and they added 10bit color to the new model vs 8. major IQ bump going from 8 to 10 for sure. Slog 3 support was also added and a slight increase on the auto focus points.

Yes I actually did finally update to firmware version 3.00. If you are on an earlier firmware the settings for frame rate will be a little different. I am using v90 SD cards and you can record XAVC S 4K on 24, 60, and 120 FPS. I do have a V30 SD card and it will do 24 and 60 FPS at 4K but will not do the 120 FPS 4K in XAVC S. The V30 cards are not fast enough to handle that 280M Bit rate, it's just too much data being pumped through so you will need a V90 for 120FPS. That is a great question my friend, but yes you can,. When shooting in Cine EI picture profiles are turned off. To enable them follow the below steps. Press Menu Button - Shooting - Image Quality/Rec - Log Shooting - Log Shooting Setting (Set or change from Cine EI to OFF) Almost there Press Menu Button - Exposure/Color - Color/Tone -Picture Profile (They are all in there PP01, 2, 3, 4 5, 6, 10, 11, ETC. Thx for reaching out, for sports I would first consider if you have any plans to slow the footage down. Fast moving sports 120fps and 60fps all day. But remember you will lose motion blur if you view it in real time so it won't look right. 60fps gives you a little motion blur so I would start there and look at the footage on a 24p time line. If there is no reason to slow the footage down to emphasize a move or action go with 24p.

Try and use static and moving subjects, for example you walking across the frame and a ceiling fan spinning. Don’t forget to set variable shutter speed so you don’t get horizontal rolling lines in your 119.88fps (set to 239.9 shutter speed) slow motion footage like I did last night

Thanks for the feedback, I am a bit curious as to what may have caused this on your camera. I am not good enough to not obey the 180-degree shutter rule and before firmware version 3.0 the FX3 did not have true 24P as the footage when added to post-production showed 23.98. I just shot some product footage at 119.88p with a shutter of 1/250 with no rolling lines. Are you using the Sony FX30 by chance? the Sony FX3 does not offer a variable shutter, but the fx30 does.

Hello, my friend, This could be a region setting on your camera body. Go into the Menu and select the yellow toolbox icon way at the bottom. Select #1 Area/Date --> Then select NTSC/PAL Selector. When you hit enter if it says change to NTSC this means you are on the PAL region. This is the correct frame rate for your region.

As long as you follow the 180-degree shutter rule, I think you should be okay, but the reason for the 24fps for NTSC and 25fps for PAL is a carryover from the legacy TV broadcast days for geographical regions difference.

It is for sure fast, I wish I could go slower but being new I had to consider the viewer's attention span. To access the shutter with these modes all you have to do is rotate the control wheel. It's the one on the back of the camera with Disp, Zebra, peaking, and shutter wrapped around it. If you rotate the wheel and the shutter does not increase or decrease, it's locked (which is by design). Press down on the control wheel right above the word shutter, which will unlock the shutter. You should now be able to change the shutter now by rotating the wheel. This seems cumbersome but it prevents you from accidentally changing your shutter by bumping the dial. Hey There SamMasghati, sorry for any confusion. 60FPS can be slowed down by 40% in post-production or final cut pro to start where it looks natural on a 24FPS timeline. Here is the complete list to start with. When I shoot at higher frame rates my intention is to slow it down and how much will depend on the look I am trying to create. 24FPS is not listed but I have been able to do it with some trickery magic in Final Cut Pro. I hope this helps These numbers are from the below formula 24 FPS / Frame Rate amount = % to slow down 30fps = 80% 48fps = 50% 60fps = 40% 80fps = 30% 96fps = 25% 100fps = 24% 120fps = 20% 150fps = 16% 180fps = 13% 240fps = 10%

Thanks for the feedback. Not having an EVF was mentioned often with the FX3. This decision was made by Sony from probably tons of market research and probably because of the camera's small size. I am not an expert on this topic but I think a proper camera for video with an EVF would not be fixed to one position on the camera like a photo camera EVF. It would have the ability to be re-positioned like the Blackmagic Cine camera, but that camera has a much larger form factor. Great observation and maybe Sony will try to add this in a future design for those of us that have a use for it.
