Great video! One note I have is that using attenuation does NOT lower background noise. It only lowers the volume of the mic overall. That part was a little misleading.
@RayValencia3 жыл бұрын
Hey DJ Illee. Thanks for checking it out, man! I thought in my explanation, I showed that the attenuator changes the Sensitivity of the microphone. I used background noise in my example to show the increase/decrease in Sensitivity of my vocals compared to surrounding noises. When set to 0db, it is the most sensitive and you hear the BG noise clearly, as well as extreme detail in my voice (so I showed how both vocals and BG noise decrease in volume as I go higher in Attenuation). If you're interested, I have a part 2 of this video, where I explain the FX3 handle again with the Rode Wireless GO II. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2PXaH9jp7V5j9U

Very useful explanations. Much better than Sony's manual. The two filter settings are high pass (low cut) filters, mainly used to cut wind, traffic, air conditioner, heavy machinery, or handling noise. Also buzzing florescent light fixtures (60 hz). The filter can be set to 100 hz (hertz or cycles) or 300 hz(hertz or cycles). The cut is fairly gradual, so to cut 60 hz noise, the 300 hz setting is probably best. To cut wind noise, the 100 hz setting is probably best. No cut gives the best sound unless interference from low environmental sounds is a problem (two octaves below middle C is about 60 hz). One cavil; the correct frequencies are 300 Hz, 100 Hz (three hundred cycles per second, one hundred cycles per second-NOT three hundred thousand Hz, one hundred thousands Hz or cycles per second (300 KHz, 100 KHz, three hundred kilohertz, one hundred kilohertz)- humans can not hear nor most microphones pick up, sounds that high in frequency).

The K3M (and the "K3M" that comes with the FX3), IMHO, are way underrated for what they really can do. You can have up to 4 different mono sources (as long each channel is matched left and right) imbedded with your video (no post-sync needed), and the pre-amps are surprisingly good. I just wish Sony would have made the handle on the FX3 more modular, but then again the first thing I did when I got the FX3 was take the entire handle apart to see how everything was piped inside there and to see what kind of modularity I could do myself. We'll see! Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
@RayValencia3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I wish I could pop the XLR module off the handle with another Digital Shoe when I don't need it. It definitely doesn't pack into bags very easily in 1 solid piece either. Although, I'd rather have it than Not at all. Lol. I saw a few Frankenstein XLR handles on the FX3 Facebook group... looks like there's some kind of ribbon cable wiring it all together. Did you get passed that phase and remove it?
@MOMENTSbyRonSonedecker3 жыл бұрын
@@RayValencia Yeah, I broke the entire handle down into each individual component (there is a ribbon cable that runs from the MI shoe through the handle and to the main internal body). I've got the equipment downstairs set up to put a quick video together on some mods to the FX3 similar to my A7SIII video I made and I plan to jokingly show what my handle now looks like (because I like to break things down and see how I can muck around with them) - guess I need to join the FX3 FB group like I did the A7SIII group.

You sir just earned a subscriber, great work on the explanations! Would you mess with the low cut filter switch on the physical microphone on the Sony vg1?
@RayValencia3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. For every day use mics, like vlogging, or youtube, especially on certain mics that pick up a lot of noise. For example, I always keep Low-cut on the Lowest setting on the Rode VMP+. Not the Max 150hz, just 75hz, because it tends to pick up a good amount of environmental noises and it helps with the AC or fan noises, etc.

Hi Ray, did you compare the noise level with your professional audio recorder? I use the MixPre 3 from Audio Devices and the noise level is far better than the FX3 and the audio handle. So I am using my MixPre 3 and not the handle. Or could my FX3 have a defect?

Clean it off first with Dawn dish detergent to get all the oils off of it.. put it on the inside of the insert for the microphone.. omg! Took me so long to find this video! I usually run a lav on XLR 1 and a hand held on XLR 2, but I want to add a small rode micro to the input 3 for ambiance sound. Changing the audio setup to 4 channels is the first step . But Premiere handles audio in a weird way (I miss using FCP 7! long ago- I simply dont get FCP X). When I use 2 XLR Channels, Premiere put them on the same track (not two tracks like FCP) and one channel is on the left and the other one on the right. I duplicate the track and I apply the effect fill right with left on one track and fill left with right to the other track. This way I get them separated. But what if I added input 3? I know this is an old video but it's very complete. You covered the 4 channel option much better than other videos. Thanks

@FBombBaggers2 жыл бұрын
So you can use all 3 inputs at once? Another video said you couldn’t.
@RayValencia2 жыл бұрын
Definitely. You have 4 channels of Audio. The 2 XLRs take up 2 channels, the 3.5mm jack on the Handle takes up 2 channels. Although, if you plug something into the 3.5mm jack on the BODY, it will override the XLR Handle completely.

Thank you so very much. That was a wealth of knowledge and has really helped me out!! I have two questions for you. If I am just using the VideoMic Pro+ on the Sony FX3 handle should I still keep the 4ch Audio Monitoring to CH1+3/CH2+4? Also, I'm connecting the detachable 3.5mm TRS Cable into INPUT3 on the handle... should I purchase an XLR adapter to plug into INPUT1 / INPUT2 or is it all the same really. I'm mainly a vlog channel at the moment. Thank you in advance!! 😊
@RayValencia3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse. All good questions. If you're just using the Rode VMP+ into Input 3, you could put your Input Selector on IN3, to make IN3 be your Ch1-2. Then just monitor, 1/2. You get a couple extra features like the Attenuator if you connect through the XLR, but I like keeping the Rode VMP+ in Input 3 because you can enable the Lower safety channel in the Microphone's functions, then you'll have 2 separate channels for Input3 (one with a lower gain). You can essentially do the same thing with the handle and the XLR to 3.5mm adapter, but you can easily do it in the Microphone itself too. I usually only use that XLR adapter for connecting multiple Rode Wireless Go receivers, because I needed several 3.5mm jacks.
