Best sound for a Premier bass drum with a huge port?

My Premier bass drums both have a reso head with a huge port. This makes it easy to add muffling but it may also reduce the amount of tone a great deal. Trying out different settings. Song removed to save time as video was running a bit long.......

Good video Todd! Good luck with your knees sir. As far as the tuning.. I came across Rob Brown's method of tuning the bass drum which is to go finger tight first like usual and push down in the center of the head to make it reveal the wrinkles and tighten the lugs until the wrinkles go away, and then turn the lug back a half turn. Do the same with the reso head except don't turn lugs back a half turn. You then add pillows or whatever you like for muffle control, but don't fill up the drum entirely, and boom, done. Works really well. I've taken it a step further and now I use a empty 1 gallon paint can filled with water and set that on the head to make the wrinkles and then do the other steps like stated above. Its easier than trying to hold the same pressure on the head all the time while tightening and what not. I then use a black out curtain from Wal-Mart and roll it up and tape it loosely to the batter head and shell like Simon Phillips suggests and get another black out curtain and fold it into a rectangle shape and lay it down inside the drum with it barely touching the reso head. I use a 5" hole in the reso that's 5" from the bottom of drum and I get that big attack sound with the nice controlled boom that way. It might be something for you to try out next time you get bored sir.

Holy crap, you've explored this and then some. I love watching Rob 'beatdown' Brown too. Has a lot of simple ways of doing things that others spend too much time on. Never got into Simons videos though. The water jug idea is a bit much for me- remember I have a tendency to have bad luck. I can imagine all sorts of spills and the like! Thank you for the examples, I appreciate it! And PLEASE, call me Todd or even "Sarge"- that's what everyone knows me by. Have a great day and thanks for the comment!

@CheapDrumsGuy I also love watching Rob Brown, he's great! About the paint can thing.. I always put the lid on to prevent spills as occasionally I get clumsy haha and sorry about the "sir" thing again.. just how I was raised and habits are hard to break sometimes so I'll try to remember to say "Sarge" from here on out, I promise. Lol

Remo P3 is a great bass drum head. I enjoyed watching your experimentation. There's not much I can say about this. Bass drum sound, like any drum sounds really, is all about personal preference. And like you said, microphones and editing make the sound for many drummers in many situations. I like a premuffled batter head (Aquarian SK2) tuned a little bit high (for feel, mostly) with no hole in the reso and no further muffling. Of course, this means I can't put a microphones inside, but I actually like the microphone on the batter head like the rest of my drums. I'm no rock star, and I can do what I want. 😎

Hi Todd - great video. Good luck with your knee. Tell your surgeon that the founders of Orthopaedics are Welsh. Check out Hugh Owen Thomas ! Re the bass drum - it just shows what a difference a bit of time and patience does into getting the sound and what a difference the pillows make. Of the 4 bass drums I have my 22x14 Premier sounds the best. Thank you for taking the time to show us.

Hi there, thank you for the comment. After tracing my lineage back to Wales, I didn't think to look up historic figures and personalities. My friends were all Scots and they tried to assimilate me into their culture. THUGS! (ha ha). My big Pearl kit has the deepest bass- that's the 22x18 with an EMAD. My APK's is the loudest by far with the most attack. After almost 150 videos, I'm running out of ideas. But lately, if I look into something that I've not done before or paid much attention to, it gives me something to utilize. I jumped into all of this at full throttle and have skipped a lot.

@@CheapDrumsGuy Yes Hugh Owen Thomas (re Thomas Splint) & his nephew Robert Jones were the founders of modern orthopaedics. Robert Jones did a lot for soldiers and their injuries in WW1. nb- worked with a fair few Scotsmen. They are great! Re bass drum & kits your are one the very few who really sits down and does demonstrations of hardware and toms, and so think the only person who focuses on vintage Premier drums whichever side of the pond ! All the best with your treatment and your jobs around the house. Have a good week !

@@iorijones6351 Because of your knowledge on the subject, I will look into this. I love to learn. As far as Premier goes, I've always been under the impression that they were the "classy" drums of yesteryear. Much like the DW or more so, the British Drum Company of today. That badge just does it for me!

Hi Todd - re Hugh Owen Thomas - his nephew who continued his work was a1st cousin to my gt grandmother so the story is well known in the family. Robert Jones did a lot to help wounded soldiers in WW1. Re heads - I like the powerstroke 3. Enjoy your day! 👍🏼🥁👍🏼

Thanks Todd! Hope everything goes well with the orthopedic surgeon. Check out attack orbit heads! They're quite different than everything out there. I've used mine on three different bass drums and have yet to need baffling internally at all. Sadly they aren't cheap. Get that yard done! And let me know if you find that fountain. 😅

I have seen those orbit heads, but they just looked too different for me to even think about. And as far as the yard that video and getting it ready and all the bending around and kneeling down, did my knees in, and I really lost interest in doing the yard this morning so I gave up after about 30 minutes, and as far as the fountain of middle age goes, I’ve been looking for a long time now, and I’m afraid I’ll never find it

Good morning to you, my tight friend. First, I am sorry to hear about your knee issue, and I hope your first VA check-up comes out okay. Next, this is a great comparison video. After watching/listening to your trials, I think I like the sound of the pillow sitting perpendicular to the circumference of the drum. One more thing, and i might be mistaken, but is your foot pedal squeaking? In closing, this is a fun watch, and I thank you for that so much.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️

Hey buddy, thanks for the comment. Good ear, that pedal is squeaking a little bit. I got to put some three and one oil on it as I don’t have any of a wax based lubricant here.

Between all the bending down and moving around while I was doing this video this morning when I went out to finish the backyard, my knees hurt too much and I just didn’t have the enthusiasm to complete it so I told my wife screw it I’m done for the day
