I'm really glad that "density" is the new trend in game development. Yakuza, Elden Ring and this game are great examples of this. As much as I love Elite I would rather never be able to leave Sol but have the system jam packed with things to do and see.

Slightly agree as I would absolutely adore a game set within a single solar Dyson Swarm of tens of billions of unique O'Neil habitats. Hundreds of different factions of varying power scales. And thousands of different ship types and designs. Of course I dunno if such a thing would quite be possible yet with current tech. Although I imagine it would be although I can't imagine how taxing such a world would be on a system to run.

@@AGTheOSHAViolationsCounter Damn, this is something I've been talking about for quite some time. A space sim set in a Dyson swarm (even if it was only 1% saturated) would be absolutely massive. It's a dream that is motivating me to get into game development.

Even No Man's Sky has the Elite Dangerous issue. Literally virtually infinite planets to explore, and even though its packed with "content" all that content is super shallow and quite honestly gets boring pretty fast with the repetitiveness. There just hasn't been a system designed yet for gaming to allow for infinite procedural worlds that are unique enough and give enough extra content to actually be worth exploring these infinite worlds.

Elite Dangerous: as wide as the ocean but as shallow as a puddle.
@writershard5065
@writershard5065 2 жыл бұрын
I would have to disagree, 'cause there just wouldn't be enough in Sol to explore. You would never get the kind of moments you get in Elite now, with sights like Thor's Eye and experiences like massive high G planets within Sol itself. A single-system game would have to be its own thing, but exploration would dry up somewhat quickly.

It's amazing seeing you all here loving Freelancer. I feel nostalgic. It was also the first game that really captured my love for space (and video games as a whole). I remember watching a short preview of its sequel and I felt very sad for its cancellation. And to this day I have been searching for the worthy space game to succeed Freelancer (I tried No Man's Sky and spent quite a while playing it, and I have been eyeing Star Citizen since 2014 but I'm having doubts since it's still in Alpha to this day.)

A big boon to this game is that the developers don't care about "realism" at all and are putting in environments that look cool.
@BillyOrBobbyOrSomething

Good point. Agreed, even though in reality its not any less “realistic” than any other space game excluding like KSP or some shit. There’s no such thing as just flying around in space. Propulsion doesn’t work in a vacuum. For that reason I never understood why the hell we give a damn about “realism” past that point.

@@SandCarpet Everspace 2 is still fantastic. However, it doesn't feel quite as alive as Freelancer did. I miss all the ships going back and forth in the systems of freelancer. You could hail them and they would tell you where they were going... it was fantastic. I still have been thoroughly enjoying everspace 2 though. It gives me a little bit of that freelancer feel I was looking for and the combat is far superior to freelancer since that's the main focus of the game.

The issue of level scaling is overblown and comes from people not really understanding how it works nor how the scale of a player's advancing stats and gear affect fights. Locations in the game have a level range within them which determines what the minimum enemy level would be in that location. As the player advances into higher levels the enemies will also advance in level but that level is then offset by a +/- modifier specific to that system. For example Ceto has a -1/-2 modifier which means a level 20 player will encounter enemies that are level 19, and the upcoming drake system I believe has a +2 modifier so enemies will always be higher level than you. The reason for level scaling? Well specific locations and systems will have specific loot and enemy factions to encounter, and said loot and encounters would feel pointless if you're picking up level 6 gear and one shotting level 6 enemies.

In many ways it is a great game, I've got over 900 hours on it but I am a retired returning gamer near 70, my reflexes are not what they used to be and for all the hours I've tried I had only gotten through the third boss battle once before the did the next update and had to start from the beginning. Except for the boss battles you can play on easy or very easy, but if you are no longer at the top of your game and probably never will be again so far this is not one for us. I've pointed this out repeatedly friends and some of those doing walk-through videos have given up on this game because players like me who can use a walk-through are giving up on the game. Give it a shot but don't frustrate yourself and burn up a lot of hours, sooner or later before the final release someone will probably make this senior or rookie friendly.

5:14 going to quickly pitch in here, you most certainly will feel more powerful than the enemy. Level scaling is not static in the game (that’s at least the plan, still a WIP). It’s dynamic and takes into account your level, enemies level, the location you are in etc. For example if you are at level 20, and you fly in the first system, enemies will feel easy. But if you go to one of the later systems in the game, you’ll most definitely feel a challenge. So it’s not as simple as you level-up one level, enemies level-up one level.

I’ve fallen in love with X4 Foundations again after a bit of a hiatus. I’m doing the Terran storyline for the first time, and I’m really enjoying it. Same here, I love X4 Foundations (and X3 Albion Prelude). But with that said, the X games have horrible UI which will take people time to learn, bad or no descriptions on a ton of items, and tutorials which I hear are worthless (it's been years since I did one, so cant remember myself). It is also a game that new players will have a lot of trouble with if they just hop in expecting a game where you can just pew pew your enemies right from the start. I think with all of that, many new players would just become frustrated and quit out of the game long before they see how much the X games have to offer.

Looks like the comments have been blasted by the space game purists who would prefer space sims. Everspace 2 can't be compared to Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen in terms of a space sim, but that isn't what ES2 is going for, they are going for a gorgeous arcade space looter shooter and I think they are pulling it off nicely. Best Space Game ever? That's a bold title and a claim which I am sure Rockfish Games themselves wouldn't dare proclaim. But what I can say is that they are the best space game developers currently. They interact heavily with the gaming community and are extremely transparent in their development cycle, and they have to be since they were partially funded by the kickstarter campaign. I am looking forward to how Everspace 2 finishes their development and if they pull off everything they have announced in their roadmap, they definitely would have the best arcade space looter shooter to date. And yes, I am counting Freelancer since I am not blinded by nostalgia.

OA, have you played Starsector or have any plans to try it? I got into it recently and it is incredibly well-made but hardly see anybody talking about it. First impressions are kind of like 2D Elite Dangerous meets M&B Warband with excellent space fleet combat system.

Feel like Starsector would get great overall scores, but the Updates part will be a problem for some. Even though the latest version is 0.95.1, each update takes about a year on average. Still a nice candidate to check out and keep an eye on.

I tried it after it got added on xbox one app on pc free (1 month monthly but access to many games anyway), I say its worth it! I tried to make a video gameplay but for some reason the hdr is messing up the colors. It looks way better in person on an Oled display. Word of warning it does give you headache but you get used to it. If you like galaxies, outer space, planets, spaceships etc. This games is gorgeous!!!

I started playing the 1st one but I’m not a fan of rogue like games ! But I will push on in it regardless ! However I much rather play part 2 since it’s more of an rpg ! But I will def get more experience in the first one before giving part 2 a shot ! I like that you can explore a bit more in the sequel as exploration is my favorite part besides combat ! Elite dangerous is my favorite space sim ! And your channel s been my favorite for that game ! Unfortunately I only have a ps5 and no pc ! So I don’t get to play many of the space sims I wish I could play ! So I settle for what I can get my hands on ! So I will def get everspace 2 in the near future ! I am just about at the final boss in the game ( chorus ) which is pretty decent !

The only thing I don't like is enemy scaling. If you go into Nomad land you should be shot down within seconds. If you find powerful gear through exploring, you should be giving yourself an easier ride whilst your weapons are ahead of their time. There are a lot of beat-em-ups where you learn new skills that are seemingly kick ass but after a few fights seem to tone down with all the enemies you previously fought making it feel pointless.

Good video. Always had an eye on the game since the first announcement but never got around to it. I'm more of a looter shooter than realistic sim person. Realism isn't per say bad, but you can overdo it as many games do. Am not big on Early Access program on Steam as more often than not, it tends to not end great. At least in my experience. However I believe I will give this game a try.

It is a great game I have burned over 1,000 hours on but it is not designed for returning gamers like me. I am near 70 and my reflexes are not what they were half my life ago. It would appeal to many more like us ifg we could do the bosses at easy or extra easy, there is nothing in the law that says you have to accommodate the disabled handicapped or elderly after you have taken our money.

When playing a game I like to ask myself a question: Am I having fun? When I played star citizen The views were breathtaking and the scale was great but I came to the conclusion that it wasn't fun and it was never meant to be fun as a space sim. However, I think the answer to my question for this game will be very different than my answer for star citizen.

My question is are they driving away too many who are just seeking old-school action, adventure, and excitement in exotic settings with bosses that waste too much valuable time? I am a retiree returning to gaming and my reflexes are not what they used to be. I walk away in disgust for weeks at a time because clearly, they don't care about returning players like me.

No VR is truly unfortunate. The first one is great, with a few UI issues in VR and some design issues that this should really open things up, but while I own this, I have yet to dive in. The other huge issue I have is no mod support... There is so much tuning the systems in 1 could really make it shine, like toggling sub systems to allow a more Newtonian flight model or customizing ship setup, but generally, it's very on point. What I have played of 2 was really nice, though still not on the level of immersion that VR provides 1.

I’m not a fan of enemies scaling to player level. It’s kind of a lazy way to design a game. I think if there is the “main” enemy that warps/teleports/hyperspace in that’s different. But flying to new places and seeing hard enemies, and enemies you can not beat at low levels makes going to new areas exciting and unpredictable.
@vast634

I like levels related to areas, such that progressing in the game world the levels increase, but the old areas remain the lower enemy levels. (with loot also lower value there). I think that's the most fair setup.

Will you ever cover Starsector? It offers a highly developed world, with you player starting off as simple captain, be it bounty hunter, explorer, trader, smuggler, what have you but eventually would be able to change fate of sector, by brining it into a golden age, or burn it all to the ground

Auto scaling? That's an instant no go for me.. I absolutely hate auto scaling, it takes all the fun and feeling of progress out of the game. Then I'm just playing to see the next environment or story set peice, instead of getting more powerful so I can take on areas I once couldn't..

I love your review categories in the "best space game" series, that's exactly how I look at it. It does include an option for a toggle to turn off inertial dampening, maybe that is what you want for the flight model somewhat?
@Spelljammer1
@Spelljammer1 2 жыл бұрын
@@grendal27 That's neat too, but what I really wish for is that it has an option to remove the "mouse aiming cone" near the center of the screen. This makes the ship jump suddently once you leave this area and rapidly catch up to the cursor. That's essential for an arcadey mouse shooter, but when you switch to joystick input it ruins the experience. They added the "cursor lock" feature in a later ES1 patch which helped a little to tame the cursor to the nose of the ship, but not with this issue ultimately as you could still feel your nose bouncing when your input touches on this arbitrary area.
@grendal27
@grendal27 2 жыл бұрын
@@Spelljammer1 Might be from a recent update, but ES2 also has an option for the centered crosshair (I think that's the ES1 option you mentioned?). You can customize the area and enable relative mouse movement, which seems like it's better suited for joysticks? I'm not sure. Have you tried those options? With those on it feels pretty smooth, but I prefer the floating crosshair for mouse so my perspective is different.
@Spelljammer1
@Spelljammer1 2 жыл бұрын
@@grendal27 okay thanks I'll have a look if that's better implying in ES2 Vs ES1, I did back the project. "Adjusting the area" sounds like it addresses what I'm talking about, which is the invisible radius of mouse aim even after cursor lock.
