I fish a lot at 1-8 feet around points and reefs most of the year- so I use 1/8 oz head to avoid "donating" tackle to the rocks/concrete chunk rip rap placed around these bars and reefs. If I use a 1/4 head....it's out further while trolling with plastics over transitional mud/sand flats or weed edges in 8-12 feet of water. It's a big prairie pothole full of walleyes, perch, crappie......but the deepest spots are no more than 15'.

Possible crossover bass guy here. You mentioned getting outfished by mono and Al. Agreed Al is awesome, but I'm an up north bass fisherman, and I throw, no joke, 10 foot floro leaders, minimum. You said 6 feet like it's a long leader, if you can use a small knot and deal with reeling down on it, I usually only do it with spinning gear, but I throw insane leaders on gin clear WI waters. 20 feet, no joke, all the time. I want the braid to minimize the stretch on bomb casts, I'm doing everything I can to not spook shallow northern bass, long cast, need a good hookset. It may not be the buoyancy of the mono, but the distance to the connection knot that is giving the advantage to the mono on certain days. If you find it's super clear water when mono works better, try doubling that floro leader. Just my experiences. Maybe wrong, or not good for others. Good video, I'm just stumbling on it now, looking to see what the walleye guys are up to. Sounds like finesse bass fishing to me. Which is good, I have all the stuff for that lol

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit kzbin.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

Super helpful tips! What do you recommend for line? I have a pretty versatile spinning setup with 10lb braid and a heavy baitcast setup with 40lb (mostly for pike or heavy cover bass) but I've heard 6-8lb mono is better for walleye... Do you think 10lb braid on my spinning setup is ok or should I invest in another rig with lighter mono? Preciate any advice!
@TargetWalleye4 жыл бұрын
If I could only throw one spinning setup for walleye fishing, it'd have 10-lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader attached. There's special times when mono will get you more bites, but you can still do a TON of work with the braid + fluoro combo. We have a ton of zebra mussels making the water clarity waaaay up there...so I like to throw on a much longer leader than most -- say about 8-12' long. I adjust the lb test of that but leave the braid.
@hotramen59524 жыл бұрын
when you switch to mono, do you still use the fluoro leader?
@TargetWalleye4 жыл бұрын
I do typically run a fluorocarbon leader still. The water has gotten crazy clear around central MN thx to all the zebra mussels...so always looking for any advantage I can get. Fluoro is just that much more translucent and also is super abrasion-resistant which helps with the nicks those zeebz like adding to the line when snapping through them.

Right! Plenty of walleyes to be had from the bank. Snap jigging with plastics works great for that too. Love not having to tote bait around -- plus always seemed to lose more bait from the bank since your presentation is more horizontal than it'd be from casting from a boat. Good luck!
