I agree 100% with what was shared in this video. This presentation is one of the very best synopsis’ on jig qualities and applications produced. (particularly for the novice to using jigs). Couple items to add: In finesse, neutral to negative fish moods, most always try to use the lightest weight jig you can get by with; the reason being that it gives the walleyes just a bit more time to see the bait, but most importantly the lighter the jig the easier the fish has to “inhale” and get it into their mouth. Secondly, shortly after Northland Tackle introduced the Titanium Weed Guard Stand Up Jig a couple of years ago, I was at the factory in Bemidji and got to talking about that jig with a couple of pro-staffers. My suggestion to them was to offer that jig in “gold”. Their response was: “For sure, but you know what?” “Draw a line south of Brainerd, and few people know of the qualities of gold on catching walleyes”. We all agreed: “Seriously ??? !!!!” So a tip to everyone whom reads this: Use GOLD !!!!. Again, a great video this was.

This is arguably the best jig-head tutorial on KZbin. And that's saying a lot due to the vast amount of videos I watch on jig fishing and walleye presentations. There is no question that your teaching methods and calm but concise explanations are largely responsible for the lion's share of your subscriptions. I'm legitimately astounded that your channel does not have ten times the subs that it does right now. I'm rarely motivated to even sign in, let alone comment on videos such as this. Wow. Great action presentation video! Great explanations on all the details as well. Walleye was always a dream-fish to catch and eat but I never caught one as a kid in Wisconsin. We use lots of jigs in Hawaii in the saltwater and the things you explain here as far as action, color, hook-gap, etc., definitely apply anywhere you’re trying to fool a fish in the water, no matter where you are in the world. Fish brains are pretty much the same. Conditions are different but changing with them is the key. Great video as usual! 🤙🏼

Wow. As previously said, this is a great jig-head video. I know this will help with my walleye catching. I can also see an application of your tips for my new hobby of tying walleye hair jigs using standard lead ball jigs. I have started using plyers and flat metal to re-shape or flatten the sides of the lead ball heads to more of a pill shape so I can paint then and glue eyes on the sides. I think I can also create some of the other shapes you discuss using lead ball head jigs and plyers. I am walleye fishing with my daughter May 12-15, 2024.. I can hardly wait to try out some of your tips. Thanks so much for the video.

As someone who fishes norther Saskatchewan’s Canadian Shield lakes including one that is full of flooded timber I will definitely agree a light wire ball head jig is handy. Always considered myself to be reasonably well versed in jig fishing over any other type of fishing but I learned a couple things.

If I had to pick one jig for river walleyes it would be a long shank round ball. I can buy them cheap bulk and the bronze hook bends easy. Med light rod and 6# mono will float an 1/8oz jig and 4” plastic ringworm or slim paddle tail at the perfect rate for 90% of small river fishing. I rarely switch to 3/16 but will with bulkier plastics. I catch a hundred walleyes ever year on just a lead colored jig.

I'm a diehard catch and release trout fly fisherman, but when conditions are in survival mode for trout in hot temps and low water, I let them rest until fall and hope others would as well. I am looking forward to lake toothy critter fishing, but like many of us, I can't justify buying another boat. Had one several years ago, and the two best days were when it was bought and then finally sold. I'm hungry to know how to shore fish for walleye, as well as Esox, esp. in summer.

Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, kzbin.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.

Thank you. Maybe your jig hooks re too small. Opening the gap helps on smaller jig hooks to catch the roof of the mouth better. You can probably upsize your hooks and get away without bending them.

A Texas rigged jig worm/shakey head is a hard bait to beat in cover. Also don’t rule out standard brush guard bass jigs. They come through cover probably better than anything.

Floating heads are used to position the bait a specific distance from the bottom. Often a 3-way or Lindy rig will have a weight to drag on the bottom and the jig will float above that. Detecting strikes can be even more difficult in these rigs though...

Walleyes can see the color orange, better than any other color, hands down. Now just that they see that color better doesn't mean that's the best color, on any given day, they can be picky. I do best with white not charteuse, most of the time I use white or orange.

I like a tungsten ball head. Less aerodynamic so it moves more water and the tungsten clanks around more when it bounces off rocks and such.

My #1 pet peeve with jigs is they make them with too small of hooks. I want a huge hook gap, I don't care if I miss a few small fish, the big fish I'm targeting have no problem with a big hook. I had to resort to pouring my own jigs, and had to modify some jig molds to accept the oversized hooks I like.

Thanks! Funny you should ask. We used to fish twister tails with a minnow all the time growing up. I really haven’t fished live bait with plastics at all lately though. I’ve had such good luck with plastics alone and you can get more casts in if you aren’t re-baiting all the time. There are days where live bait really shines too but I rarely pair them anymore.

Many times the plastic is molded to have specific motion in the water. Poor attachment to the hook/jig other bait can interfere with the intended movement and appear unnatural.

The key is to use bead head nymphs and fish them behind a small split shot, much like you would do with a worm or minnow.
