I tried salt, pepper, floured the meat, then pressure cooked the squirrel. Then deboned the squirrel, and made squirrel and noodles. Man that’s good, with biscuits.

I had Squirrel as a kid. My parent's went out of town and left me with an older couple and it was the best tasting meat ive ever remember eating still to this day. Rabbit is a close second. I think this lady knew what she was doing. Amazing i still remember that. Your thumbnail bought back such a great memory. Thanks

Awesome video and kit ! When we'd fry Squirrel when I was young and at home... I'll never forget that Dad would always fry the head. Yes head, then he'd crack the head with his fork or butter knife and eat the brain 🧠 NOPE , I never tried that. Not my cup of tea 😮 THANKS Dave. I'm 63 yrs old now. 🇨🇱

I know alot of people probably like your modern camping or bushcrafting videos more, but I have been watching you and learning since 2007 and I really like these style videos. I think things back in those days were simpler , for sure a lot harder but people back then were not afraid of hard work. And there is just something about the old ways of doing things that's makes me feel good. I was born in 1967. But I would probably been better off in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Thanks for this video series. Headed to Kentucky for some camping the second week of November and looking forward to it.

I never par boiled squirrel. They went directly from the tree to the frying pan. Definitely ate a lot of fried squirrel growing up. In fact, I’m not sure I ever ate it any other way. Still one of my all-time favorites.

Did some squirrel for the first time the other night similar to this inspired by the journal of the yurt. boiled with garlic and onion powder in the water for close to an hour( until the joints got movable) basically fall of the bone. Then stripped the meat off and tossed them in egg , then coated with pancake mix and fried the bits in some oil I cooked chopped onion in previously until they were golden brown . Fantastic, the whole family tried it and loved it It

Dave I really enjoy the era type camping. One of the things that come to mind when I watch this is budget bushcraft. Which to me is people gathering what they can and getting out there . I often trade and gather together items from yard sales and thrift shops to use when camping would like to see a series on that . I would do it myself but do not own a camera thanks

Great vid & chuck box, delicious looking vittles 👍. Question, with the squirrel cookin, have ya messed much with camp cooking mountain squirrel? I know some will laugh, I'm in hills of WV. I've not been able to tenderize in woods boiling enough to keep the meat from being shoe leather lol. Appreciate experience/knowledge share. Granted red or Fox squirrel is tougher, but still......🤷 Appreciate yer time sir.

Getting that oil to smoke in the pan is key to seasoning the pan to make it non-stick for cooking. You can even allegedly do this to flat rocks for non-stick cooking.

Talk about things not falling into your lap, I searched for years to find a decent affordable Cold Handle skillet, eventually scored one for $5, another for $16, both in great shape. Got a larger one, new old stock, covered in Cosmoline from WW2 for $35. I got your PM40 last year for Christmas, love that thing but was always curious about the original Swedish ones. Used to be dirt cheap but now if you can find one they're $100-$150 insanity! I came across one the other day in the most random bizarre way and the guy sold it to me for $10. It's just the pot but I already have an original windscreen and stove. WOW it's heavy! I think you made a good call on shaving the weight down, still strong but lighter.

I grew up in Southern Kentucky (Big South Fork River) grew up hunting and eating squirrel and rabbit. Around here it is still very common to eat both. In my opinion a Rabbit is superior to squirrel and one of the most underrated meats that exists. However squirrel is decent and will always get you through a tough situation. The only way I eat squirrel now is making Squirrel Dumplings. Just like Chicken and Dumplings in this area Squirrel Dumplings are very common and very tasty. Squirrel Dumplings and a fresh pone of cornbread is always a wonderful meal option, especially on a cold winter day!

I used to get fox squirrel twice a month in season. Just the small grews here which is in town. They know their safe as do the deer during next months season. Would like to see squirrel soup or stew that was popular with so many presidents. They prefered it to more high class offerings. Probably like the senate bean soup. Anyway I have not found a squirrel recipe fit for a president.
