Hey, who wants to make a remix of Super Mario World: Return to Dinosaur Land in the style of the Second Reality Project Reloaded series? Whether RAGB is directing this hack (likely alongside me) or not, I think it really does need its own backgrounds, level design (though it can keep the same as the original SMWRTDL), original soundtracks that sound like they came from The Second Reality Project Reloaded, its own ending, a stronger story than "strong man rescues weak woman from monster", new levels (including a Star Road & Special World at the end), etc. Yeah, if there's one problem I have with a lot of hacks, it's that they can have non-custom music. A lot of others (most notably Super Mario hacks like Super Mario Bros. 3Mix, Super Mario 64 Land, Mario Gives Up 1-3, etc), on the other hand, have their own soundtracks, even if most of them happen to be Super Mario World versions of existing gaming songs.

Man do I ever wish there were more videos like this. It's hard to find any content about hacks that actually talks about or recommends them rather than just goofing around on a few random shitty ones let's-play-style, and it seems rare to find someone who really understand what makes a truly good hack, i.e. balanced difficulty and a real attempt to change or add majorly to the original game. It can be hard to find good hacks and I often find out about excellent ones only YEARS after they were released. If there's a channel out there that lists new / good hacks I'd love to know it.

hip indeed Yea. if you want to get into rom hacking. you have to learn many things about the file formats and know how to re-program the whole game. There's people who are doing gamecube rom hacks in the works and they look amazing! But yea. rom hacking is like learning how to re-program an entire game to make it even more special.

A note for the Zelda: Parrallel Worlds, I recall a post from the dev that stated that they designed the difficulty with the ability to use save states taken into consideration. So don't feel like you're cheating if you have to make use of that feature to clear the game.
@gamechannel1271
@gamechannel1271 Жыл бұрын
That's a terrible idea. People use save states because they are struggling with a part of a game and are trying to just get through it. Not because they enjoy using save states.
@Justforvisit
@Justforvisit Жыл бұрын
@@gamechannel1271 I'd disagree there. Sometimes it's also just very convenient to be able to save anywhere you can instead of havinf to rely on the intended save points only, a perfect example would be Zelda II where you had to walk aaaaaaaaaall the way back when you died. But in our modern day and age and with most people being older, having jobs and maybe also a family to support we all don't maybe have the time anymore to wait for the intended savepoints, so instead and when technologx allows it nowadays, why not save anywhere you can?
@ImSquiggs
@ImSquiggs 5 ай бұрын
@@JustforvisitPeople are not generally criticizing using save states as a sort of extended pause, it’s more about using them to trivialize challenges in the game, IE saving before something difficult and trying it 100x without really caring if you die because there’s nothing lost.
@ImSquiggs
@ImSquiggs 5 ай бұрын
I can definitely confirm this hack was made to use save states. Me and my roommate tried for a month to beat the cartridge version on a real SNES and just the first level alone is HELL without save states. If you die, you will lose hours of progress, because there is no save in LTTP that won’t bring you right back to start when you load until you clear the first castle and stop the Overworld rain, and they decided that the first castle clear is a journey in this one haha. You have to gather stuff in a town, buy things, beat a pre-dungeon cave and then beat a really backtracky windy dungeon with boss all before you can save even once, and if you die it’s all over. We tried for months to just get to the first physical location you can possibly save and we finally made it, but were so burnt out when we got there that we haven’t picked it up again since haha

Zelda Goddess of Wisdom is NOT glitched. What you presented at 4:05 is you doing thigs wrong. You patched the IPS patch to the false original ROM. You patched to US ROM, while in the readme as well as under Patch info it clearly states to patch to EU rom. On Romhacking.net you even have the CRC-32 ID of the original game listed, and a warning that if these numbers don't match, do not bother patching/playing at all. But you did just that. You patching the game falsly resulting in bugged Rom, which is completely the fault of the end user (ie you) and blaming the author of making a bugged rom is really the worst case scenario that the romhackers could face. And of course your problems are the result of obsolete IPS patches who don't have the security check to tell you that you are doing things wrong. Not to mention the header/no header thing. 50 percent of all users patch to a headered rom, when they should patch to a non headered one and then wonder why the game is glitched/not loading. However obviously some hacks are unpolished since they were made by common people, and not companies and debugging/betatesting is a serious process which can take months by a lot of people/beta testers to even bring the game to a playable state.

@@solidus3168 Pretty much every Super Metroid hack requires an either headered or unheadered "Super Metroid (JU).smc" ROM. I'm not going to link those here; Google is your friend. Edit: And yes, it does matter. For example, if you use a european Super Metroid ROM, things are likely going to break.

Hyper metroid was amazing in my opinion; huge well-designed world, balanced combat, and an ending sequence that's virtually second to none even counting other professional efforts. Great video as always! Zero Mission is actually the subtitle of the GBA remake of the first Metroid on NES, with additional areas and bosses, bearing the Super Metroid look. It's not mentioned in the video so I thought you might be unaware of its existence. It's a great remake, definetely check that out. Super ZeroMission on the other hand is apparently (haven't played it myself, speaking through the video and a quick google search) a refined and hardened remaster of the GBA game on SNES through Super Metroid rom hack. I guess it also has further additions to the game, content wise. So the rom hack's contents are actually based on an officially released game that is the prequel and not entirely indie creations. The hack probably wasn't going for a sequel in this case. Also, SNNNNNNN.......NNNESDRUNK!! Obviously. XP

so would you recommend playing zero mission on a gba emulator or super zeromission on a snes emulator?
@serkansen0190
@serkansen0190 3 жыл бұрын
Never Mind. Just read in a metroid hacking forum that super zero mission gets extremely hard and was a good hack when it came out, but it does not has as near as the polish of a official nintendo release like the gba zero mission. in addition to that, it mixes zero mission and super metroid, so it is not an "demake" or "remake" of the original zero mission NES or GBA game.

You should do a video about Crimson Echos vs. Flames of Eternity. No one else has done one. Talk about the differences, the history, and the controversy of the two projects. I want to figure out which one I should play; I'm not interested in playing both since they are similar. From what I understand, CE is 98% complete, and slightly better. FoE is built off of an earlier version of CE, but it goes in a slightly different direction; people say it's not quite as good, but it is complete and still being improved (at least as of 2015). Maybe if more people talked about it, it could inspire a group to finish off CE.

Your notion that it's harder to make a balanced level is actually *very true* In the game industry itself there's an axiom, "It's easy to make something, it's hard to make something challenging" I highly recommend the Tony Garcia and Mike Stout Developer LP of Ratchet and Clank. They go indepth about difficulty balancing and how *really* hard it is. Warren Spector and Tum Schafer also talked about this on separate occassions somewhere.

Controls can be an issue sometimes but it's a relatively cheap fix to get an otg cable or a slightly more expensive peripheral. Excellent video! Really looking forward to this series as I just got into rom hacks really. I'd love it if you covered some Final Fantasy 6(3) ones...they have some good ones (albeit most can be annoyingly hard). Curious, will you be covering Super Metroid Redesign? Or Crimson Echoes? Many people say the newer versions of Crimson Echoes are the goto instead of Flames of Eternity.

I want to do a couple more SMW ones I've found interesting, but yeah at least one FF6 hack, and Mario Kart R. I haven't seen the newer Crimson Echoes so I'll have to check it out

I doubt there is a "newer" Crimson Echoes as they got the no go from Squeenix way back; it's a miracle that we got what we got at all. I've played the 99% version and it was buggy as all hell. Flames of Eternity is just the way to go since the people over there really tried their best to finish it. Although the website hasn't been updated in a year, the project can still be updated with more content whilst CE will never change.

Nice list. Looking forward to see what else you tried. One of my favorites is Super Puzzle World. There is also an other version of the Zelda Parallel Worlds called 'Parallel Remodel'. Which is an easier versoin of Worlds. It's by far not as brutal as Worlds and more for the 'casual' zelda players.

So after watching every video you’ve published - amazing channel by the way - I have to say I agree with 99% of your reviews, with the most minor of caveats. This stems as far as agreeing with your reviews of the SNES’ biggest tittles to “Extra Innings” being one of the best SNES Baseball games. That being said, the 1% ties to your review of Final Fantasy II and CT: FoE. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that my love for FFII is likely that I view it through rose colored glasses - I’m one of the few people who liked II better than III for a myriad of reasons. Of course, If I’m being completely honest, I’ve played so many iterations of IV, I cannot truly say when I last played the original SNES release. Is it fair to compare FFIV: Hard Type to Final Fantasy III? Probably not, and your comments aren't wrong accordingly. However, when you think about the general story, difficulty, and music I still think II is stronger. I was surprised to hear you thought FoE was just “decent”, given your love of the first. To me, FoE took all the great aspects of the first, albeit with a slightly weaker story, cranked the difficulty up to 11, and rolled with it. I will say that some of the earlier iterations were pretty buggy and the game felt incomplete but that seems to be mostly resolved. Anyway, these are one of those comments that probably gets filed under the “don’t care” category but regardless, I did just want to state that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your channel and look forward to future releases.

One method is finding people that sell reproduction carts; they've flashed the chip with the "apdated" and patched file. Another is using a "romcart" such as FXPak Pro (formerly SD2SNES") or Everdrive, which hold the games on a micro-SD card. Patch the appropriate rom file with the ips file, then place in a folder and access through the romcart's menu. Many of these patched games will work on original hardware.👍

Zelda Parallel Worlds is proof that just because someone is competent, and knows the original material doesn't mean they can make a good game. The problem is that there's no way anyone could possibly get through it without a guide, which ruins Zelda games. No amount of exploring will advance your game at all, and anyone who claims they've beaten it without cheating of some sort is an absolute liar.

@noddwyd
@noddwyd 5 жыл бұрын
@@fentanelfloyd8383 Apparently I don't still have it. I'm pretty sure it was a pdf file. There is a website with some sort of guide at zelda quertymodo com and some speedrun guides in other places but it's not the same one. The guide I had was for the original version they decided was too difficult. Newer versions of the game are different and I think don't require things like bomb jumps and glitching through barriers or hovers. The hover I definitely used tools to do though and it was only in one room in the Parallel Tower where it was required. Not many people do those except top speedrunners. I remember the guide mostly helped with the beginning where I had no idea what to do or where to go, and in a late game dungeon where you teleport everywhere. The teleport map looks like spaghetti. I would have had to make a map if I didn't find one.

Super Mario World Brutal Mario or bust. There's a remodel of Parallel Worlds that changes the mode from insane to normal. I've played a few of these games, but haven't had a chance to play all the way through. There's even a bunch for n64. I tried to reprogram a game editor for Megaman X, but it was quite a bit more work than I could handle.

@cerebralhawks4544

Parallel Worlds wasn't made for "hardcore Zelda fans," it was made for emulator users who had save states and cheats. It's a game that, unlike every SNES game, is aware you have save states and cheats, and is actively fighting you despite those "advantages." It kind of turns them against you. It's not meant to be played straight (e.g. on a flashcart on a real SNES). That's just silly. However, there is a second version of Parallel Worlds that is meant to be played fairly. I haven't messed with it. If you ever revisit Zelda romhacks, you should also talk about the Randomizer.

Good list, I enjoyed Flames of Eternity a lot, but it's not a very balanced experience as the first one. It's way harder. The problem with a Chrono Trigger sequel is the same that bugs the Half Life 3 to exist today: excessive expectations. Flames of Eternity is better than a lot of RPGs, even for Super Nintendo, but is not at the same level as the original. Even if SquareEnix develops a better game than CT was, probably, for most of the people, it would not be as good as the SNES one. HL3 is in the same situation, because no matter how good it is, some would still think it ruined the "trilogy" because it wasn't good enough to satisty the huge expectations that nostalgia generates.

That's why it's hard to go wrong with games such as Black Mesa or Ocarina Of Time on the 3DS - games where they take the original classic and make a modern ish looking version of it. Very interested to see what Capcom does with the Resident Evil 2 redo. It looks terrific!
