I would say search online the day before but should be able to get a same day ticket also. Summer months are much busier though so doing a little preparation ahead is advised

We have repeatedly seen and heard about tourists being deliberately trapped and fined 40 Euros on buses in Florence, with some instances even preventing them from validating their tickets at the yellow machines. The ticket inspectors are very rude, threatening to call the police. This makes me wonder if traveling to Florence is worth it.
