Beatrix Potter purchased a number of farms with the specific intention of sustaining the local breed of sheep, known as Herdwicks. Herdwicks are very important in maintaining the character of the landscape in the Lakes because they are able to roam the fells, the mothers train the lambs how to survive in such a harsh climate. They call sheep that can roam freely 'hefted'. Beatrix Potter realised that the Lakes would change if there were no hefted sheep to graze the fells, so used her income from her books to sustain the Herdwick flocks. The value of wool has been very low, to the point where it was burnt, but Herdwick wool makes beautiful, hard wearing, carpets which are now quite fashionable. It is also used for packaging around items in transit that must be cooled, for horticulture and for insulation. So, if you love the Lakes and want to keep them as they are, take every opportunity to buy wool from Herdwick sheep.

Beatrix Potter didn't just buy the farms, she also bought around 4000 acres of land the farms were on too. In the latter part of her life she became a Champion Sheep breeder, and also came to be regarded as something of an authority on the Herdwick breed. She was also regularly asked to judge in local agricultural shows. After her death, she gifted the land and farms to the National Trust, which perhaps isn't that surprising given that she was a good friend of a certain Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, who founded the National Trust in 1895.

There's a company at Near Sawrey that makes designer hand luggage and handbags from fabric woven specifically from Herdwick fleece, www.herdwick.co.uk/herdwick-tweed-bags.html and when combined with wild bracken cut from the fells, Herdwick fleece breaks down into a very useful and sustainable compost.

Yvette your joy and enthusiasm is infectious. I so enjoyed this video because I am now old and living in the south also my wife isn't very well so we don't get about very much. In the past I lived in Yorkshire, running a Venture Scouts unit and travelling often to the lakes for outdoor activities so your pics and my reminiscences almost brought tears to my eyes. I'm sorry if I'm crossing a line in these days of political correctness but you yourself also enhanced the beauty of the scenes! We also used to travel to the Yorkshire moors and the Dales and, if you haven't visited those beautiful areas you might like to give them a try.

Recommendations for the North. As said by many, Yorkshire Dales. Also take a look at the Peak District and Northumberland, in particular lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle (some of the early Harry Potter scenes were filmed there), Bambugh Castle (if you ever see someone riding a horse on a beach with a castle in the background, it's usually Bamburgh!). Berwick-upon Tweed has some fabulous walled fortifications.

@@YvettesVibes Just don't try to squeeze all of York and Yorkshire in on your first trip, theres far too much to see up here! York itself is lovely to explore. The Dales, the Moors, the Wolds, the northern Peak District and the Yorkshire Coast all have their own feel... but they're all Yorkshire. Enjoy!

Glad you enjoyed The Lakes, I favour Keswick to Bowness (the Bow rhymes with Toe) and I'm one of those people who swim in the lakes. Derwentwater at Keswick has lot of islands to swim to, and is actually pretty shallow and so is quite warm even at this time of year, as long as you take the right precautions. I'd back what most others are saying, Yorkshire Dale's and Northumbria are lovely, and West Coast of Scotland including the Islands are magnificent in early Summer (before midge season).

Beautiful place is the Lake District. For info as well asBeatix Potter though both versions of Swallows and Amazons were filmed in the area, Donald Campbell did the water speed record on Coniston and there is a memorial to him there. Also William Wordsworth the poet lived there.

Aahhh a Shetland sheep dog. I grew up with them, my Mum and DaD had 4! (2 x tricolour, 1 x shaded sable, 1 x blue merle) they are such sweet dogs. I now have a Portugese Podengo Pequeno.....who is also very sweet, but far more wild and suffers terrible lead aggression

Have you decided yet if your move to the UK will permanent, or do you think you will ever return to Australia? I think with your complexion you are more suited to the climate in the UK. If I lived in Australia I'd be worried about skin cancer... As well as spiders, snakes, sharks and fires. I'm sure it has lots of positives as well but when just pegging out the washing can turn into a life or death situation I think I'd definitely prefer living in the UK. The fact that you get the British humour tells me that you probably have a very British personality. IMHO I think you are much more suited to life in the UK on many levels. I'm sure it must be hard missing family and friends back in Australia but in our hearts we know where our natural home is and from watching your videos it definitely seems to me that you are meant to live in Britain.

Any visit to the Lake District comes with a curse - the weather 😂. Of course the scenery wouldn’t be as beautiful without the climate but you have to be prepared that it won’t be very warm and most likely you’ll get rain. However for the wonderful landscape there are few places that rival this area.

LOVE the Lakes! We had a great time kayaking on Windermere last year. We saw sunbathing cows lounging on the beach, which I thought was AWESOME! I even put those lazy cows in a video on my channel. 🐄 I was excited to see the cows wading in Buttermere in this video. How cute!!!❤️

Definitely worth a week of anyone’s time! Theakstones brewery, tea rooms in Harrogate, Whitby for the fish and jet sculptures. And the scenery while you drive to these places is wonderful. And whatever you do visit Robin Hoods Bay!

Simon Morris Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are on the edge of the North York Moors, not the Dales. The Dales are the area enclosed within Pateley Bridge, Skipton, Settle, Kirkby Lonsdale, Tebay, Kirkby Stephen, Richmond and Middleham. Highlights are Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Malham, Ribblehead, Wensleydale etc.

As a child I loved the Swallows and Amazons series of books, about a group of children who have adventures camping and sailing in the Lake District, so I had to visit the area just so I could experience it myself. It is all so quaint, even the boats that cruise around the lakes. If you like the Bronte sisters' books then make the pilgrimage to Haworth in West Yorkshire, I was surprised they lived in a village and not on the windswept moors!

If you go again you should go to Grasmere which is an extremely pretty village in the Lakes and has the home of the famous poet William Wordsworth- Dove Cottage. It's also known for its gingerbread. Also drive around if you don't enjoy hiking- there's beautiful views from the roads and much of the more spectacular scenery is further into the National Park than Windermere.

Beatrix Potter used her book-money to buy fourteen farms and 4000 acres of land which she left to the National Trust. Partly the reason people can walk freely in that area of the Lake District.

The lakes is beautiful. Your next Northern trip should be to Newcastle, then the Northumberland coast....... , Tynemouth, Craster, Seahouses and Bamborough - you won’t regret it and all places are dog friendly including almost all the pubs.

I've just come back from Buttermere today I couldn't manage the haystacks _ I started going upto the mountain on the right reached the peak and then moved across the tops and then came down - I was at Derwentwater the week before well done for getting out of London 👍👍

Robinson next to Haystacks I think. Camped between the two lakes yrs ago and did Haystacks, was utterly knackered that evening, was very steep and hot, also did the lake walk through that tunnel and past the waterfall.

Rather than drive around the lake from Bowness-on-Windermere to get to Near Sawrey, (where Hill Top is,) you could have taken yourselves and the car across on the Windermere ferry for about a fiver, and then only had to drive another couple of miles. It leaves from just south of Bowness, and is a Lake District experience in its own right.

Rebecca and I go every year to Buttermer. We went this year on the BMW bike camping in the camp site in Buttermer.. swimming in the lake near camp. It's fabulous.. at the side of Buttermer is Red Pike.. it's extrem powdery red in places like a rusty iorn texture the mountains rock form... the views look over Buttermer and stunning scenery.. a must visit.. Hopefully we will move to the lakes in fucture.. Will be there again next year.

So glad that you got out of London to visit the real Britain. If you enjoy hicking then get hold of the Wainwright's Walking Guides they take you through some mindblowing hikes. If you have the time and the energy for it try the Coast to Coast from St Bee's on the West coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the East 182 mi (293 km).

We go over to the Lakes for a week every year and I get so home sick when we leave because of the stunning scenery. It's nice in Northumberland but it seems so dull after mountains and lakes around ever corner. It can be horrid in the middle of summer though because of the tourists! Autumn is a good time to go with all the colours. That said, I would suggest travelling to Northumberland as it's a gorgeous place. The coast especially is covered in castles (I think Northumberland as a county has the most castle's than any other because of it's border position), is beautiful in general with some rugged coast (and massive empty beaches) and you can do a trip to Holy Island and enjoy being cut off by the tide, or a trip to the Farne Islands to see one of the largest nesting groups of Puffins (at the right time of year). If you prefer Roman stuff, older history and/or more rolling hills then head inland and visit Hadrian's Wall (complete with loads of forts to explore) and the Cheviots where you'll find Iron Age hill forts and cup and ring markings. Alnwick is gorgeous too with the castle and the gardens. That's probably best in spring when the cherry blossom is out as The Alnwck Garden has "the largest collection of ‘Taihaku’ in the world. Comprising of 329 trees, they all bloom together for up to two weeks around the end of April/beginning of May." I haven't been myself but pictures I've seen and people I know who have been said it's absolutely amazing. Another option is to walk along Hadrian's Wall. You could get the train up to Carlisle and back from Newcastle (best views to be had walking that way without having to turn around and in theory prevailing wind behind you). I believe it takes about a week (depending on how fit you are/how much you want to walk each day - some people walk it in a long weekend - it's 84 miles for the whole way) and there's plenty of campsites and youth hostels en route to use. @@YvettesVibes It's not a trip to the Lake District without being rained on! Whenever we go we class 1 day of rain as being extremely lucky! I recall one trip where we walked around one of the smaller lakes (only about 4 miles) and it was so torrential our gear wasn't even fully dry the next morning - and that was with good gore-tex waterproofs on. If you're lucky with the rain you just get heavy showers and the dark storm clouds over the mountains with breaks of bright sunlight make everything look even more spectacular and make for some of the best days out (especially if like me you are a photographer).

Glad you made it up to the Lake District. As someone who lives here, it's often easy to forget just how beautiful it is to live here until it's pointed out by someone not local and you start to appreciate it all over again. The walls are called dry stone walls as they have nothing binding them (eg concrete, etc... ). Windmere I find way too touristy and roads packed with cars abandoned where ever people want and people walking in the road as the paths are full of sightseers, etc... Buttermere is my favourite as it's a little away from the tourists and largely quiet compared to the likes of Windermere and Keswick. If you want a good drive, take your car over Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass. Remember to use your gears to slow you down as you'll quickly over heat your breaks otherwise. Lol.
