Alright it's a new month on the channel and we finally accomplished our goal of getting up north in England. We visited Cumbria a county which is a hot tourist destination for The Lake District. Places like Windermere and Keswick are world famous. The national park is fully of mountains and lakes. But there's a side to this famous beauty spot that the average tourist will never see or know about. But on the Western side of the lakes are a collection of towns that nobody ever sees or visits unless you're from here! We visited gems such as barrow-in-Furness, Workington, Windermere and Maryport on our Cumbrian visit.

Pretty fair assessment of Bowness, from someone who lives just up the road in Windermere. You quite rightly pointed out how much of a nightmare it must be to live there, so I’ll give you a local perspective. Weekends and holidays sees the population rise by the thousands and for a village the size of Windermere, that increase puts a real strain on everything, especially the transport links. If you can’t walk to where you want to be, it’s probably best not to bother. A 15 minute run to pick the Mrs up from work in Ambleside, can turn into 90 minutes sitting in traffic. Windermere is a terminal train station so the top of the village gets stupidly busy, but if you add poor planning of the roads around the station, there’s regularly 2-3 mile tail backs heading back towards Kendal. The roads and access to Windermere are being addressed with the new Windermere gateway project, so that’ll hopefully help people on their way down to Bowness. It’s easy to be perceived as hostile, as a local, towards tourists but without them most locals wouldn’t have decent jobs, and as a quick aside, Cumbria(especially in the Lakes), and Cornwall have some of the lowest paid workers in England, which fucking sucks when you see the 2nd homes on the lake shore, and the super cars taking the owners to them. We appreciate you all coming here, but if you could stop treating the place like a theme park, take your shit home with you(or dump it in Maryport), and maybe acknowledge that people do actually live here, I’ll spend less time silently cursing your existence 😉

This is the reason why the harbour in Whitehaven looks orange: In Whitehaven, there is a train station connecting it to towns at both ends (St Bees to the south, Maryport to the north) However, as many of you may have noticed, there is no train tracks to be seen in Whitehaven. This is because the tracks are underground, in a tunnel that goes under the town. The rails in this tunnel often get rainwater in it, and therefore there is a lot of rusted things in the tunnel. And there is also a lot of rusty water in the tunnel, and the drainage system in the tunnel funnels that rusty water into the harbour. I live in Egremont, the town just over from Whitehaven, and all the locals agree that it is an eyesore, but the council are actively trying to solve the problem.

What unites many places on this video, indeed this channel, are the statues erected to remind people why the town is there. It's like, "Aww mate, you should have been here 100 years ago. It was a right laugh and everyone had money to spend." I was born in Workington back in the 50's when the smog from the steelworks was realy bad. Then we moved to where my family lived in Aspatria, then onto Carlsle to reduce all the travelling in winter, those 70's winters were bad ones. Now i live in Chester, and i think it must be close to a turdtown, most of the shops are boarded up and the whole place looks like a scene from the 30's depression. This whole country seems to be full of places that when you visit them you never want to return.

I live there for around 3 months a year (my work takes me there). I always look forward to going there - but after a couple of weeks I can't wait to leave. Great if you're elderly, though.

Whitehaven - the frontage for the old baths is listed and so although the rest of the building could come down, the frontage needs to stay and sharing walls with the old John Paul Jones pub means that the pub is likely to remain until the whole block is redeveloped. The marina water colour is fairly recent - thought to have come from water escaping from old flooded mine workings - investigation is still on going and hopefully a solution will be found fairly quickly. BTW - Cumbria is no more - the county ceased to be April 23 - however all but Barrow in Furness and Bowness on Windermere are in the new county of Cumberland.
