When you go to this charming island in the Waddenzee, be sure to visit more than just the white beaches and high dunes. Striep, dating around 850, is the oldest settlement on Terschelling and it was home to the islander nobility. West, todays largest town, is home to the oldest working lighthouse in the Netherlands: the ‘Brandaris’ was built in 1323. There are also many bunkers from WWII hidden on the island which, if you can find them, allow you to feel the history for yourself.
