That 400mm is sharp. The argument I am seeing around KZbin channels is the 100-400 enough or the 70-200 with the teleconverters and this lens is what we need now? My opinion whatever Nikon decides to do I am for it. I do believe they are systematically putting out products that the people want. Unfortunately people are impatient and want it right now. I can wait and when the price is right I will get them. Stay Safe and Keep Smiling! Cheers!

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these 3 amazing lenses. However, if MOST of your time is spent near or at the long end, the 70-200 with the 2x TC is not the best choice (image quality wise). Not that it’s not “acceptable” - the others are just better at 400. If MOST of your time is spent on the shorter end / middle, and you need the extra light of the 2.8, the 70-200 is the way to go. For my $ / use case, I’d likely go with the 100-400. As Matt says, it’s all about use case.

re: NVME or SSDs, guessing they're having an issue getting true TB3 speeds within the dock. if i'm not mistaken, the G40 SSD fits inside of this, but would see the speeds drop to ~900mb vs what we see with these directly connected, which is ~2500+ via TB3. perhaps their way of making sure we'll buy the next one they release, and want to upgrade from this one lol.

I picked up a CalDigit TS4 hub (have a TS3 for the iMac). Works very well, but does not have a built in CFExpress reader (wellm the Sandisk version doesn't either - but you can add one!). I see a lot to like; but for me, most of it is over kill for my use case. I agree, a way to include NMVe drives - that feature would make me seriously consider it. At B&H the dock is US$489 and they only stock the SD-card reader for UHS-I. The idea is nice. But it is not for me: I use Windows and already have Sonnet's [*] TB3 dual slot CFexpress card reader. I have a Wise USB 3.2 Gen 2 dual slot UHS-II SD card reader daisy chained from the Sonnet and this works great. [*] The Sonnet did very well in speed tests, but, at least in Windows, has a quirk: a card must be present in the device at boot time or else it will not become visible. The Sonnet has its own power supply unit - a brick integrated in the power cord.

I would like more Thunderbolt ports but the one you show looks too expensive without some form of HD option built in. I like the look of the LaCie 2Big drives too, but they have old style CF card reader slot not CfExp type B, so they are no help until they update the design. Still looking.

Very interesting... as most companies race to the bottom to be $5 cheaper, Sandisk is saying, "hey we will make a platform product that you can keep and update for years, not just use and throw away when the cheap plastic part breaks....like on $30 card readers that the cats run around the house with stashing underneath the couch. " it's a maybe.

A shame that these CFE modules don’t seem to read XQD as well…
@MattIrwinPhotography2 жыл бұрын
Yeah XQD was superseded by CFxpress almost 2 years ago, but perhaps if enough people ask they may consider making one ... I will throw a card into it and double check to see if it works :)
@Bunnyisms2 жыл бұрын
The other tricky thing is all the CFExpress and XQD readers that read both formats seem to need you to install the special Sony driver to make the reader even able to read XQD cards. A lot of people seem to be having trouble installing the driver and it seems that Sony haven't done a good job keeping the driver up to date, especially for the new M1 Macs. I'd be very curious if this would work with XQD with the special Sony driver installed. I don't have any XQD cards at the moment though

Thanks for your latest episode Matt! This looks a great addition. One thing, does the transfer read and write speeds hold up? Or is there some redundancy? If that storage idea you raised works, do you think this can/may replace NAS storage? Or, is it an addition to NAS with the added benefit of the reader modules? PS: Thanks for squeezing in New Zealand within the ANZAC acronym! Good stuff.

Hi Matt - I am glad you got yours "for free" - but the rest of us - WOW this is expensive -- £480 for the unit and £80-100 for each unit - so yours cost £760. -vs- £50 for a single CF Express Type B Card Reader. NOW I assume yours delivers power, can daisy chain T3 AND as you say it is convenient. It is only Thunderbolt 3, but then there is no T4 options available.

Its awesome, but sadly a fail for me. Hear me out, its not cheap, so its not for the average hobbyist, thus I am lead to believe more professional, but it seams stuck between real commercial pro and hobbies. All my commercial work and those of other commercial studios transport files on SSD drives/cards. We either use the blackjet docks or the blackmagic dock. Since they already settled on this form factor, they cant add a standard SSD reader into. When I shoot tethered, its directly to an SSD, and thats transported back. - Again, let me repeat, its awesome, but not for me and I think it falls short. And yes I do have some of their stuff. I have the CFexpress reader and SD card reader in this form.
