Airing down your tires is by far the best (and cheapest) way to increase your 4x4's off-road performance. How low you can air down often depends on a few factors, but even dropping the PSI by a few pounds can make a big difference.
In this episode of Inside Line, our Senior Off-Road Editor, Ali Mansour, goes over different air pressure ranges and what he finds best for general trail wheeling. Using his 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, he takes us through some amazing east coast trails. Here, you'll see what dropping your tire to 30, 15, 10, 7, and 5 psi does on the trail.
Along with Ali's JL, which is running a 37x12.50R17 Nitto Trail Grappler, there's a JK on 40-inch Trail Grapplers along for the ride. Both showcase how dropping your air pressure on the trail can be critical for not only off-road performance, but ride quality. There's also the element of vehicle wear, which is covered in the video.

Great video, very informative and easy to understand. I just bought my first set of Trail Grapplers and absolutely love them. And that’s one really sharp Jeep.

I was at uwharrie and earned my first Jeep badge of honor, Dickey Bell in my stock 07 Rubicon. I only have the stock 31 inch tires, but the advantage is that it crawls so slow in 1st gear and 4lo. I really enjoyed falls damn. I didn't think it was much tougher than wolf den. Dickey bell wasnt that hard except for the main obstacle. I think the toughest was the top of rocky mountain. luckily I went down it but that was the toughest of the day, I didnt do daniel or Dutch john.

Tires are the 1st stage of suspension, whatever they can't absorb gets passed onto the rest of your suspension.

When on trails I drop my 40” toyos in raceline beadlocks to 5lbs in front and 8 in rear. But my street pressure is 20 in front and 25 in the rear.

I go to 5psi with my S-10 on 40s. Sometimes lower in the back if I don’t have the spare in.

i have an 02 silverado 1500. i dont do anything super crazy but i do enjoy driving in the trails in the mountains..so there are some obstacles but nothing insane. What psi would you recommend for my truck? Tire size is 285/70/17. Thanks!

I would try 18 psi. That should give you a good balance of ride quality and traction without worrying about loosing a bead.

www.xdwheels.com/product/wheels/xd231-rg-race/?attribute_pa_finish=machined Those are the wheels. For some reason, I'm not seeing the correct JL bolt pattern being offered now. You should still be able to get them however.

Can you tell me the correct tire pressure for a 35-inch tire? The current tire pressure of my tire is 44PSI.

What's the application? When I had 35s under this Wrangler I was typically around 30psi on the street.

Are those wheels from the same KMC that makes bicycle chains?

I don't think so. KMC is part of the Wheel Pros family. I believe they just make wheels.

Sidewall flexibility can add significant "flex" also. On a vehicle like mine that doesn't flex much , it could be over 10% better. What lift are you using?

@@DrivingLine woah ! So you got 35s to fit with bump stops and fenders mods, etc ? My friend is getting a Wrangler. Just trying to find the shortest reasonable path to 35s. Sounds like you got it !

I'm running 37's with this lift. If you want to run 35's, you'll have zero issues with rubbing. It rubs a little on the inner fender, partly because of the wheel backspacing. If I had a wheel with a little more (over 5 inches helps), it likely would not rub at all. The KMC's have 4.75 inches of backspacing.

I learned that 10 - 14 lbs also prevents tire puncture on the trail

1:23 Word of the Wise DONT remove the core... Doing so can result in you losing it. And unless you are like me and carry extras in the glove box, you wont be filling your tire back up when the air pressure blasts the tiny tiny little thing 35 feet away out of your hand. Just pressing it can release pressure 90% as fast as taking it completely out.
