My bike is a 2011 Ultra Limited and I run the Dunlap American Elite when it’s available. I’m running a Continental on the front for now because the Dunlop has been unavoidable but it’s performed well 5k miles. I tried a Michelin commander II a few years ago “commander III” are now available but I’ll never use them or any tire from Michelin. The commander II delaminated on the interstate after 1500 miles almost putting me on the pavement. When I went to Michelin rep about it and after telling him how I was running fast on the interstate. The response was I “over worked” the tire before even looking at said tire. This tire now hangs on my shop wall as a reminder never to buy another Michelin tire.

I run the commander III front and rear on my SGS. Super happy with them. Every condition they run great in. From concrete to pavement to dirt. I run hard and fast also. I have 15000 miles on them and I bet I get at least 10000 more out of them.

1998 Heritage Softail Classic setup for solo rider weighing 210 lbs and 20 lbs luggage. Dunlop American Elites front/back wide whitewalls. First set April 2019 lasted 14k miles. Second set April 2021 lasted 11k miles. Third set April 2023-present 3k miles and still rolling. Average Speed 70mph. Temp Range 55f to 95f. Air Pressure 39-40 psi. Comment: I give these tires an overall rating on dry surface 9.5/10. Under wet conditions 9.0/10. Offroad: Not Happening...

I have a 2017 BreakOut. Solo rider. I use Cobra Chromes up front and American Elites in the rear. I currently have 13k miles on both. I have the front at 36psi and rear at 38psi. I ride from 40° to 100° this yr. I have about 15lbs of weight in my swingarm bag and I weigh 203lbs. The tires are about 1/4 worn. I'm hoping to get 18k on both before winter hits. The Cobra Chrome is softer than the American Elite but the front tire usually lasts longer than rear drive tires. So hoping to get about equil mileage. Both fantastic in the rain. I had Michelin Cammander 2s on and they were terrible in the rain.

Gross rating on your bike is 1360 lbs. The bike with fluids is 932 lbs. That leaves 428 lb Max carrying capacity. The empty tour pack and mount is 30 lbs. so that leaves you 398 lbs for you, Steph, and all your gear. Bottom line, you overloaded the tire and ran sustained high speeds in super hot weather - and that’s the perfect recipe to destroy a tire. You see it all the time on trailers with blown up tires sitting on the shoulder and the the driver wondering what happened.

My wife and I did the weight calculations and knew we weighed too much for the 400 lb carrying capacity on 2 wheels so we bought a trike to be safe. After 18 months on Nutrisystem, we lost 50 lbs, sold the trike and bought a 2021 Road Glide. 😎

I just replaced my stock tires (Dunlops). I had 18k miles on them. Just put a set of Michelin Commander IIIs on it. I had no issues with the stock tires, but I don’t run heavy much of the time. Went with the Michelin tires only because they were highly recommended.

Commander 3"s this season. Finally got to the wear indicators on the Commander 2"s. Over 25K on both front and rear. Mostly highway riding at speed limits. 70-75 mph. Always ck the PSI before the ride and between on road trips. Got 5K on the Dunflops before they went wildly out of balance. Switched to Michelin's and never looked back!

Wow! That's a scary looking tire. I'm a 300lb man and I pack heavy. I've gotten 20k out of a couple of sets of American Elites and was really happy with them. I'm crazy about my air pressure. I check it every morning. I run 38 front and 42 rear and I wear out tires, but have never had a crack or bad cupping. Similar experience with Commander IIs and IIIs. Your milage may vary.

I get approx 25,000-26,000 miles out a set of Dunlop OEM and American Elite on a Ultra Limited. I am running 41/41 p.s.i. and checked often. I will start getting cracks in the rear tire when it wears down and starts to cup. According to the amount of thread depth and the wear mark I could probably get another 3,000+ before the wear mark. This is around 21,500 miles and still has good thread life. Yes I try to get pass the 25,000 mile mark to get my money worth. I have since decided to change out at 21,000-22,000 mile mark to be safe before the cracks start.

I’m a big fan of running 42 pounds in the back and 38 in front on my 16FLTRU. Tires don’t cup or split. They run cooler and perform a lot better riding 2 up loaded to the max for a long distance run. I carry an air pump in the pack. Check my tires first thing in the morning every day.

I am on my third set of factory Dunlop d series. Ist set I ran 30k . Second set I had over 20k with plenty of tread left. On a new bike now 16k and they have lots of tread left. Now we typically run 15-20k miles per year. Si I generally change every two and a half to three years. Now I also check my tire pressure every week. 38 to 40 psi front and 40-43 rear. It's Dunlop for me. They are expensive but they last and last for me. First bike was a 17 ultra limited. Currently on a road glide limited and we ride two up frequently.

I run American Elites on my 04 Heritage. This last set I put 6k on them. Front tire came up with with a breakage from the center to the side wall. The breakage looked like I ran over barbed wire, about six or eight inches long. slotted looking holes with fine rubber in-between. Think I would have been aware running over such a thing, especially holes up the side of the tire would make you think it happened during a turn leaning into it. Never noticed running over debris. Checked the hole depth and several of them were as deep as the tread. Without Dunlop taking the tire in for analysis I'm assuming it's a default in the tire.

I run the stock OEM Dunlops on my 2018 FLTRU, usually get 20,000kms(12,000 miles on the front) best about 15,000kms (9,300 miles on the back) , keep air pressures as per 38-40psi. Keep my weights within specs and I weigh 200lbs. I run fast but not abusive, it regularly gets above 80 degrees in summer and often it the 90' s July and August. Tried Commander 2's one cycle but they fell off a lot after about 5,000 miles and were not as grippy. Nothing like good rubber!

You were going through something similar at the same time and you went with those Dunlop American Elites you just took off…so I do too. Lol. My tires are holding up just fine still but if I were doing the great escape tomorrow I’d be changing those suckers out for something fresh without hesitation. I’ve run four brands of tires on two heavy touring bikes: a Kawasaki Voyager XII and my current BMW K1200LT. I’ve had four tires fail: 1 Dunlop on the Kawasaki and 3 Metzelers on the BMW, one rear and two fronts. I ran Michelins on the Kawasaki in addition to Dunlops and never had a Michelin fail. I now run Bridgestones on the BMW and have yet to have a Bridgestone fail. My preferred tire brand is Michelin, but Michelin doesn’t make a rear tire with the right size and load/speed range for my BMW.

Thanks for making this video. It was a very enjoyable and informative video to watch. A sobering point that was brought up. At 18:12 "When riding your motorcycle, your life is riding on the size of a credit card." I've always thought of the size of the contact patch, but not in such a way that I could visualize holding in my hand. I love the Dunlop Tires. They're engineered for our heavy bikes. I'm going to start off the riding season on a set of new tires. Crow, I owe you one. The date codes on my bike's tires are front, 1417, and Rear is 4816. I have 15,982 miles on a 2017 Indian Chieftain Limited. I have a new set of tires sitting in my front room ready to replace my old tires, but on the rear, I upgraded from the E3 to the E4. I kept the same American Elite for the front. I have noticed that I cannot squeeze the beads together, even when putting all of my 230 lbs of weight on the sidewalls.

I run the same tires on my Road King. I got about 12k on the rear. It’s absolutely bald. I haven’t checked it for splitting but I like how the tire performs. I could probably get more miles out of other brands but the performance is why I stick to the Dunlop American Elite. I will say this… I should have gotten more. I had a leaky valve stem. Removed the core and replaced it. But it was too late.

Unloaded, 37-38 1-up on a road king makes sense, 40+ loaded. But the Big boys w 3 bags and over loaded I'd run 43+. Set them pressures cold. On my long-winded road trips I know every tire condition and pressure every morning before we load out... I run C2's and C3's with no issues. I never replace with H-D branded tires, all major brands make better touring tires including Dunlop.

I was about to get a set of these for my VTX1800R :\ I think maybe I'll skip, that bike is well over 700+lbs, and over 1k with us on it, add some gear and it's getting close to a rolling 1200lbs or more. I do inspect my tires after every 500-1k miles, but it's easy to miss that hard too see stuff that's not a cut, cup, or bubble. It comes down to confidence, and that's the rubber that separates you from the pavement, you shouldn't have any doubt your tires can perform, or even over perform if needed. I'm glad you all were able to swap these out without incident, they look a little scary. Arrive alive!

Not as much weight as guys cuase I ride mostly solo but have done over 12-14k miles on my tires since last July, still have fair amount of tread. Not a single crack/split.. however I do have cupping, which I'm not surprised because I don't check my pressure as much as I should. That doesn't look normal to me. I ride a 2018 FLTRU, (Industrial Grey) mostly just me with maybe 100lbs of gear, I'm 202 libs. I live in an area that gets 80-100 degrees in the summer. I'm back to running the original Dunlops and must say I like them , they perfrom well in all condtions, wet and dry. I did try a set of Commander 2's and got much better mileage but they were no where near as good in the rain. I also run hard, in the twisties scrapping the boards often. I do next to nill riding on the dirt or gravel. So after 74,000kms on the bike I 've learned that even 1 lb difference in air pressure can make a big difference, especially if your laying down a 500+ day as I cupped a set of tires pretty bad by getting lazy and not checking tire pressures. So on the original Dunlops I get about 14-16,000kms on the back and 18-20,000 kms on the front (8,000 to 10,000 miles on the back)...(11,000 to 12,500 on the front). Amazes me some people say theu get 20,000 miles on a rear tire? Oh I also live in the mountains of BC Canada, weather can change in a hurry so I like an all round sticky tire. Might try the elites next set see if they work as well in the wet. I check my air pressure now everyday. Nothing like having good rubber!

I read Dunlops description on the American Elite. They have a dual compound so I wonder if the softer cornering tread is cupped maybe because of that. I run a Dunlop D402...it's about $20 less cost, but based on your 12,000 mile's. I get way less mileage than you at about 7,000 mile's SOLO. But I don't seem to get cupping because maybe the D402 has only one compound in the center and the sides. I dunno. Maybe I will try a Elite next ture...I'm always looking for the cheapest tire Dunlop makes. I wonder too if you could air it up a bit more...you can't complain with 12000 miles but with fully loaded two up, you wanna be fully inflated. On lower pressure, the rubber itself flexes more so more heat especially off the center where your cupping is most pronounced. Just my thoughts I'm no expert.

I hope Dunlop is aware and fixing this. I want American made tires on my bike but I don’t want to need to go elsewhere for tires. Most riders are overweight on HD touring bikes lol or bulky anyway.

Been using Dunlop American Elite for years, I can get approx 24k miles on it depending how I ride. I wouldn't buy anything else.

Every Dunlop tire I have run splits , cracks open! I’m trying to find a better tire . I just went to Michelin website and 98% of the people are complaining about vibration hum and wobble from the Michelin commander 3

Smiling! Been running the American Elite 3 for years on my ultra classic in Arkansas and never get over 8,000 miles out of the rear on the chip and seal roads here. Got a crack in the side wall on the front that's not even half worn out. Crack all the way around both sides and you can see the white cord it's so wide. For the money they should last longer. That tire looks bad, real bad. Think I am going to try something else this time. Dunlop seems not to stand behind their tires now days.

I have the Dunlap tires that came with the bike. I have 15,000 miles on them and I have at least 5,000 more miles to get on them. 20,000 miles is what I expect with these. Of course I am only 2 up half the time.

I don't buy tires for mileage. I buy them for handling and performance. I like Metzler over Dunlop myself, although my last set of Metzlers is 18 months old and the front tire I just found a crack on the sidewall the entire circumference of the tire on the high side. Starting to wonder if anything is any good anymore

Geez. Got my first Harley this March (2010 Road King). Put 12,000 miles on it. Harley dealer put a new rear Dunlop 402 whitewall. I got 7500 miles and it’s shot. I don’t ride hard or fast. I expected more.

Probably should check your tires more often if u didn’t notice that before changing the tires. I check mine at least once a week.

I know this message is late but, My 19 RG only has 8k and I have the same issue with the stock Dunlop HD rear tire. I did contact Dunlop and they are working with me as this seems to be an issue with maybe a bad batch that were made and sent to HD to install on the new bikes.

All things considered (How you ride, how much you ride at a time, where you ride, the load you are always carrying) I would have thought they were going to be MUCH WORSE than what it was...I thought for sure we were going to see it worn through to the belts...if it was me, I would have been SUPER HAPPY at what you saw....all things considered. Great video!!

I had the same issue on two American Elite tires too. I ride the same as you, but I can almost guarantee you it isn’t the weight of the bike causing it. I’d do solo trips for 6,000 miles and the tire would start splitting! I also did a video on this tire doing this. I stick to Shinko 777HD, softer compound and only get about 7-8k on the rear. Still cheaper and more safer than these Dunlop American Elites. I’ve loaded the bike with the same weight as on a American Elite....and it never splits. Great video man!

Michelin Commander 2s were too damn slick in the rain. I use Avon Cobra Chrome in the front for the stickiness and a Dunlop American Elite in the rear. I currently have 13k miles on both and both are only 1/4 way worn. Both are great in the rain too!
