I have Pirelli Scorpion tires in P265/70r17 and have been very pleased! I was running Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs LT265/70r17 load range C on my tacoma, and they were getting very noisy after 20,000 miles and they were overall loud and rode pretty stiff. I do light off-roading and wanted something that handled better on the road, so I decided to try out the Pirelli's which are a rather new tire. They are also very lightweight tires, so my MPG increased in comparison to what I was getting with Duratracs, and much quieter and smoother. When looking at new tires, I also look at individual tire weight as one of the main deciding factors as well. Falken Wildpeaks are some of the heaviest tires offered, so keep that in mind.

Hey Mike! I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 and I’ve had a few sets on it because I’m a lot less patient, so I have a little bit of insight lol. First of all pay close attention to the load rating of the tire you want to go with. My first tire was a 265/75r16 load range “E”. In my opinion this heavier 10 ply tire really degraded the daily driver experience and is complete overkill. With those heavy tires I took a ~3mpg loss and it was miserable for road trips due to the transmission almost never shifting into 6th gear and constantly shifting between 4th and 5th gear. Unfortunately the only options for a KO2 in the size you want is a load E. Then I switched to a Falken Wildpeak AT3W in a lighter “P” rating, still a 265/75r16 and the difference was night and day. The truck felt less sluggish, the MPG hit was less that 1, the ride was softer, and the trans was a lot happier. The tires are amazing, too! They do great on the road and have never let me down on the Arizona trails. They even held up to the Flagstaff snow storms without hardly any slippage except for a few ice patches. Long story long, consider a “P” or “C” load rated AT tire and you’ll be happier. I personally really love these Falken Wildpeaks, I believe they’re the best bang for your buck and attractive too. Hope this helped some!
@ThriftyGarage5 жыл бұрын
I went with the E rating as well for the added weight capacity (trailer towing). But I definitely took a hit in my gas mileage.
@gtnoslp5 жыл бұрын
The E rating / 10 ply is a good insurance against punctures while off roading...if you off road, and or pulling a load. Lighter tires do work fine on the street but it sucks when your off the pavement and you get a tire impaled by something left by the last vehicle that went thru or what mother nature maybe left for you. Ya gotta find that happy medium.

Hey Mike, i have a off road 2014 Tacoma and the Duratrac has been the best tire for me up here in Canada,. I'll be buying a new set this fall after 5 years. The Wildpeak at3 are basically the Duratrac's on a budget, so I would consider them as well. Happy hunting.
@sonofmaniam5 жыл бұрын
I just went through this. If you really do your homework, you'll come down to BFG Ko2 and Falken Wildpeaks. Both are great, and I have many friends that run the Wildpeaks. They are just about equals, with ko2s leaning more towards dirt and rocks, and wilpeaks leaning more towards ice. They are both going to do very well in non-ice deep snow. I live in the NE, which gives Wildpeaks the advantage for daily driving (lots of ice here!). But ultimately I chose Ko2s for the good looks. I think I would have been happy with either. But wanted that slightly more aggressive sidewall appearance. I do 80/miles a a day on the Ko2s now. No complaints.

From a personal experience I can only speak of the Toyo O/C ATII. It is an excellent tire. It's very good off road (even in mud and snow). On pavement the Toyo was super quiet and good for fuel economy. For such a well mannered pavement tire, it handled Off Road (6"+ Snow and Mud and Sand without a problem), the tread design lends itself to throwing off packed snow/mud/sand/dirt that can become an issue on other tires and degrade traction.

Agree on K02, at least for 16” wheel where only E rating is offered for 265/70 and 265/75. If they made it in a C rating like they do for 265/70/17, I might consider. I could justify D rated for some added sidewalk strength, but not interested in E rated that weigh 7-9lbs EACH more than most P/C rated in category. Total overkill for a Taco IMO, and hard on rig and riders. Also drives like a pig with that added tire weight unless you re-gear; truck is already a bit underpowered. I’m going with P rated Wildpeak AT3W instead.

I had 245/75/17 Load range E DuraTracs on my 4Runner. Great tire and same road noice as the KO2s I’m currently running on my stock height 2015 Tacoma, 265/75/16 Load range E, I am going back to KO2s 235/85/16 on my Tacoma because the narrower tire just performs better in the Snow, mud and trails, it’s all about physics if you paid attention in school. The one shortcoming of the narrower tire is deep sand. I have 29,000 miles on the KO2s and they are at 10/32ds and run them at 40 psi. The 235/85 are the same height as the 265/75 tire and clear with no issues. The effective gearing drops to 3:60 from 3:73 with the taller tire.

Go with the KO2's. I have 2 sets of wheels for my 3" lifted 15 tacoma and they are now my dedicated winter setup. Don't be afraid to go with a C rated tire. They are a bit heavier, but I haven't had a nail puncture one yet in over 35k miles. they are also looking like they'll easily last over 50k. Duratracs are also a good tire, but you will find they get extremely noisier the longer they wear. the only time i didn't care for the ko2's was on the beach aired down to 12psi. I didn't think they handled well at all in loose beach sand. other than that they're excellent.

Mickey Thompson atz P3 are great tires and unique. If not, go for the Toyo!

Couldn’t wait either so, I sold my factory tires. Out of the tires you chosen I would go with the G/Y Ultra Terrain.. personally I went with Dick Cepek Fun Country.. manly cause it was different than everyone else & the tread and sidewall looks aggressive👍🏻

Hi there. I'm curious, how have your DC Fun Country held up? Any off roading?

I would choose the Goodyear Wrangler

What about the Hankook Dynapro ATM tires?, I have a set of those on my 92 Toyota pickup, they are great tires and didn't break the bank either, I would definitely recommend checking them out.

Any suggestions for replacements for my stock 245 75-16 stock Firestone Destinations on my 2017 Tacoma SR5?? I will be using the stock alloys and orig. size.

Stephen Maurer 235/85/16. You get more weight per square inch of footprint which translates to better traction, also less rolling resistance for better mileage and will track well. It’s all about physics. If most of your Offroad is in deep sand you would want a wider tire. I’ve run both DuraTracs and KO2s, both great tires and about the same for road noice. They were both quitter than the stock tires that came on my Tacoma.

@@TearDropTravels Thanks for the reply! I wondered about a sightly different size?? I was thinking of General Grabber HTS.... "all-season" truck tire since I this truck is my daily driver and I tow a bass boat a few times in the summer. If I do any "off-road" driving... mostly level logging roads on Pennsylvania game lands during deer season.

I also tow a small 14 ft RV trailer and find the Load range E tires perform great with the stiffer sidewalls for towing.
