from Tree Limb to Handle
Tools I used in the video
Makita Hand Planer: amzn.to/3kudDLg
Dewalt Die Grinder: amzn.to/41sCHCL
Dewalt 3" cutoff saw: amzn.to/3SxMZO1
Dewalt Jig Saw: amzn.to/41tOKA0
Dewalt Palm sander: amzn.to/3F1bMET
Tung Oil: amzn.to/3ISx0Hg
4pc Pry bar set I replaced the handle on: amzn.to/3IVuboT
After Thoughts about the Video: I lost my voice last week and was procrastinating doing a video. I planned on just doing it silent and by the time I did the video my voice was mostly back, but still decided to give it a go. My original plans was to push the bar all the way through the handle to give a striking surface but it wasn't happening. The little chunk of rebar will take the blows and probably better than striking the hardened bar.

Nothing like taking a break from the countless frustrations of building a production machine out of wood, metal, and nylon to watch others in the same boat. I made handles for a post hole digger out of twisted 1.5" diameter iron wood and now it opens wider than than those straight expensive ones in the store.

Great video and "Handle-ing!" Was Ginger thinking about attacking that chainsaw? My boy Taz sure would try if you didn't watch him close. He'd attack anything that made noise close to me. He tried to attack the riding mower once and got his nose ran over by the back tire and bloodied. After a quick trip to the vet to be sure nothing was broken, he never tried that machine again, but everything else was still fair game. If I were going to cut up some lumber I'd have to put him in the shop to keep him from attacking the Skil Saw.

Ginger knows to keep a distance and has been around chainsaws all her life. She will bite at the exhaust gases of things like mowers/etc. She trained herself when I signal/tell her to stay back and not bite to grab anything in her mouth and hold it. You can see her holding a random twig.

Just goes to show that you can save some cash by using your head, most people would just buy a handle or a new tool but they would not have a handmade one that looks as nice. Just curious Moe, you think dipping the handle or spraying it with bed liner would add extra grip and comfort? I use it sometimes on my speaker cabinet builds and it seems to adhere well on MDF.

Interesting though. I guess it personal preference and can see doing this on metal handles or possibly MDF. I'm pretty partial to wood or non-rubberized plastic/acetate handles myself. But I know a lot of people like cushion grip screwdrivers etc.

Thanks. Had a neighbor give me that saw because he figured it was old and he just needed a newer one. I have used that little thing so much for limbing. I try to run all my saws every few months but this one has been sitting since May of last year so it took a few pulls to get fuel pumped through. Yesterday though fired right off on the middle of the third pull.
@simonilett998
@simonilett998 Жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford Yep, mine also takes a little while to start when it hasn't been run for a while, and that is generally at least a year or two each time for me. I always empty the unused fuel and run it dry before storage, but that is the best practice, and why she takes a while on each re-awakening. I've never had to clean or rebuild the carb in over 10 years I've owned it, which would be unheard of with new equipment, however we also don't have to contend with ethanol in fuel, but it is available in 10% and maybe 15% for automotive use if required. One issue I did experience with the 015 when my sister borrowed it years ago (and almost it's demise) was the screws that retain the throttle butterfly came loose, and one ended up getting sucked down into the lower crankcase😣 Luckily my sis stopped using it when it would no longer rev up, and thankfully no damage to the engine internals, just an engine strip down to inspect and retrieve the mangled up screw, found a suitable replacement screw, reassembled, and loctite + peened the threads of the throttle butterfly screws so that will never happen again🤣👍🇦🇺

I miss hearing your thoughts and why you do what you do or about the tools you’re choosing which i’m assuming come from past experience. Until today I had never heard of Tung Oil and have no idea why you chose it over boiled linseed. Did you just grab any old hunk of wood or do you store certain species: Cherry, oak, alder, walnut, etc. I really enjoy watching your channel because hearing your practical take with a focus on using what’s readily available or can be sourced cheaply really aligns with my own views so if you catch a cold/sore throat and can’t speak I’ll get it but I think your channel was built from your own personal version of DIY and you as a person with a likable personality. Leave the Silent films for those who simply want to see restoration as an art and not learn from someone else’s experience.

I lost my voice last week and kept postponing doing a video, so I planned to just do it silent. By the time I did the video my voice was back but it was still nice just to work and not talk out loud to myself. I used Honey Locust; because it's a hardwood and what I had. Tung oil is harder and not yellow like linseed oil. It's a superior product to linseed.

👏 Another great video. I do have a question. Is there a reason for the short piece of rebar? I've never made a handle & would assume to just have the end of the handle be flush with end of pry bar but 🤷‍♂️. I'm thinking what you did with grinder at end of the bar was to catch/grip the rebar but again 🤷‍♂️. Thanks

Where did you LEARN this STUFF?! I would NOT have thought to grind that shape into the back end of the shaft.

The wordless workshop. Do your remember those cartoons from the old Popular Mechanics Magazine back in the day? Might be before your time.

Nice work. that wood handle will be more comfy than the plastic anyway. Might have to consider smashing my plastic handles on purpose just to give this a try. My dog leaves her toys all over the house, hard as I try to get her to pick up stuff, she never does. Maybe I need to bribe her with a chicken sandwich?

I probably would have glued up that first wood handle. I don't want to waste the time and material invested. How much time do you have invested? I need to do this for a miter saw, a wind storm knocked it over and busted the handle.

It took probably an hour and a half total. I did the other 3 in the set(so they match) today and it took an hour total for all 3 of those.

I am the furthest thing from a safety Sally but those hoodie strings made me nervous. I had mine get caught in a grinder once and ended up grinding my belly. It could have been way worse too.

I got mine with a drill, pulled the string out of the hood and wound it up like spaghetti on the bit in about a nanosecond... I just stood there looking stupid.

Huh. Did you guys not remember all the safety videos from woodshop, metalshop, small gas engines, etc in Junior & Senior High school?!? No sleeves past the elbow, no jewelry or watches, no long hair hanging down, no drawstrings, no scarves or loose clothing of any kind? Gloves only when appropriate? Hmmm... - Max Giganteum
