The poles can also be purchased separately this Friday at 1pm for 43.99. This will not be as deep on the dome with Surplus ponchos. Space blankets alone will not work as they do not stretch. Thank you for your support and views.

In 2019 I did a video with tent poles for this alpha tent concept "The Alpha Tent Poncho in heavy rain". The pole length you are looking for is 8% longer than your longest diagonal. I wasn’t the first with the alpha tent idea using tent poles but as far as I know I was the first to quantify the length needed. This 8% (8.4% to be super exact) can be applied to any size poncho/tarp/etc. I did the same thing using the USMC tarp which is larger (and heavier) using a longer set of poles. Same 8% greater length, worked perfect.

I don't see a huge benefit for the 'poncho poles' but the 'treeless' bipod technique for a ridgeline is awesome. I'll be looking for just the right poles that breakdown to set that up. There aren't a lot of trees in the desert and the bipod ridgeline is a great adaptation!

It’s a good idea. However, I’ve learned the hard way when I relied solely on a poncho as a shelter and poncho in heavy rains. I carry a poncho and a tarp. However, as an emergency shelter, it’s a great idea.

Thanks Dave. I had the privilege to be at the 2012 Gathering and to learn hands on the things your videos had taught me. If it's not possible to build a winter fire for some reason, the space blanket will reflect body heat somewhat - while reflecting the cold out - when the shelter is fully down. I'm supposing people will also block the openings as much as possible. If I wasn't an old lady now I'd get one for myself. However, I will be getting one for my nephew who came to Ohio to keep me "out of trouble" at the event 😂

Wow! Thats a good deal for all that stuff! The jewel of adding the space blanket is that the shape of the shelter is going to focus the energy from a fire or just body-heat. I used to work as a lighting tech for music/concert and corporate/convention event's back in the 1990's & 2000's our main fixture was the "1000 Watt PAR-Can" (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector), I can attest that the Parabolic effect is very good at heating thing's up!

Wow you guys at Pathfinder are killing it! So far this year I've spent the night out under my Pathfinder survival blankets at nearly single digit temps, last weekend used my skillet, alcohol burner, PM40, and Scout Canteen. Now do I cobble together my own set up in an attempt to make this, or simply give Dave more of my money? I think I can see where this is going...😁

Dave, another great learning session. Why not put the non-reusable mylar sheet on the ponch before you put the poles in and tape a couple ends? Wouldnt it be easier and also less risk of tearing the mylar? Still great video. You ought to redo in a very slow fashion your Rapid Deploy Ridge Line making kit. All the vids I've seen are done way to fast...

Good golly Dave! There's your million dollar invention right there! Every soldier, marine, and sailor is gonna want one of these. You will probably get a military contract for these bad boys. This is way more compact and ultralight than the current tents being used in the military right now. If you have any high ranking friends who like your gear, you might pitch this product to them as a cheaper, more functional option to the current tents they use.

Very cool! I remember finding the concept of the Alpha Tent and wondering why nobody every bothered to produce a kit, but probably because there's just enough variation in poncho's it's not worth it. But some sort of cut-to-length pole system, or as he described in an update to the article, somebody sent him what appeared to be a titanium set of poles that he'd been 'issued'. I think offering it up along with the proper poncho is a great idea, and the offset to the cross in the poles was a great idea for the additional headroom!

this is a brilliant implementation. unfortunately, as a 6'3' dude, my dome and feet are going to hang out. and since i am in the polar wastes of Canada, this puts my two primary body parts outside the shelter, which are two things i kinda want to keep from freezing the most (ignoring the obvious heart). poop. but there are, as they say, ways and means of procuring other solutions to scale up this idea. thanks for sharing. i was looking for something to replace my super shelter only because that thing, while great, is a noisy bastard...
