In my opinion older Pajeros for the sub 5k mark are amazing, I bought a gen 2 Paj from 2000 for 3.5 thousand and its taken me all the way from the bottom of Taz to the Daintree and back without missing a beat. Couldn't recommend them more! She now has 435,000km on the clock too.

@dirtydenzal545 funny that. No rot on mine. Chassis is kept treated. It's basic 4wd maintenance. Only land rovers are so bad that they actually have a market for half chassis, quarter chassis, 5/8 chassis, 9/32 chassis and actually abundantly available new boot floors and bulkheads. 😂😂😂. Done enough welding for mates with all kinds of 4x4. The majority on discoveries.

Picked up my first 4WD about 6 weeks ago, a 2011 NT Pajero RX for $19k with 210000km. The thing in immaculate, I'm the 3rd owner, never been offroad, FULL service history and basically very well looked after. It's my weekender and have done over 1200km in that 6 weeks. It's now got some Maxxis RAZR AT811's and bash plates fitted. I have a diff breather kit to fit soon as well as a rear bash plate to protect the rear bar. Once I sell my VN SS I plan on a 2" lift, roof rack and a rear locker. It'll tow a small tinny perfectly when I get one as well. I've done some wicked stuff and been to some cool places in it that I wouldn't have been able to without a 4WD. There's a lot more wheeling, camping and fishing in my future. Thanks for the great content as I have learnt a lot from you guys. Keep up the great work lads 👌👌👌

I joined eBay plus which gave me a $180. Discount so paid $820 for it. I fitted and now have done over 38000klms and so far it has not missed a beat. IF cash at hand, say $20-30k, id buy an 4th gen 4runner or tacoma, possibly a late 70's to early 80's ford/chevy truck. Get something that isn't rusty and looks to have been ised lightly. After searching for weeks and weeks and looking at heaps. I went above my 30 k budget, spent 34 k on a 2021 Triton auto, one owner, 75000 k's, full log book service history, perfect paint and panel, no signs of off road use. Couldn't afford a D-Max or Hilux in similar condition, at least 7 to 10+ grand more expensive respectively and lots more k's on them.

Yeah it was thirsty but man was that thing comfortable, very capable offroad and just an amazing looking car. I’d definitely recommend one for new 4wd owners.

There’s just a stigma around European vehicles, as an Amarok owner myself I think they’re also a great car. But the 4 cylinder tdi is known for eating serpentine belts and killing the motor, this was rectified in the later ones with a guard for the timing belt. Also both V6 and 4 cylinder are known for dpf issues. But frankly if they’re maintained and actually not just driven to the shops and back, they tend to not be problematic. I’ve owned both the 4 cylinder and now currently own the V6.

I bought 2 Dodge Dakotas (separate times) one for around $1k USD and for the most part it has been a great ute. I had some issues with it from the previous owner, from that point it was down for about 2 years. So I had to have a vehicle to get around in therefore my second ute came into play. Both are the same make and model just 5 years difference. My '92 is now needing a new front 4WD unit. My '97 is running just fine, I have not had any issues with it. Both have the same drive line in them. A V6 petrol engine, a 5 speed manual. The '92 had a really rough life with the previous owner but that doesn't mean it's a bad ute. Right now its just about the finances to get the '92 running like it should.

All IMHO A well maintained early Discovery 2 Td5 (1999-2002)sub 10k late disco 2 Td5 (2002-2004) sub $20k. Stay away from the Discovery 2 V8. Comfort, capable in standard form, cheap to run with more creature/4x4 comforts than a Landcruiser or Patrol of the same era, speaking from experience as I’ve had 3 X LC 80’s, a couple of Patrols and a Pajero. You get a diesel 100 with 300k for 30k+ that costs a fortune to run and is gutless. The Pajero petrol is very capable but expensive to run. The diesel is the better option for economy but not as reliable. The patrol diesel options not great, certainly capable, but I think the LC is over priced for what you get and if I was going to one of those it would be the V8 petrol. Personally I have a Disco 3 V8 reliable as hell mechanically but expensive to run and expensive to maintain, but kills anything on the market IMHO on road for comfort as well as a very capable 4x4 in std form and ultra modern looking vehicle without spending crazy money. And now currently building a Discovery 4 TD V8 after I retired my Discovery 3 TDV6 which was also an amazing vehicle for comfort and off road ability. Yes I am a LR nut also and have a workshop dealing in them in Melbourne.

Whenever anyone mentions the 100 series, they always fail to mention the petrol V8 2UZ-FE powered model. Most of the time, it's half the price of the 1HD-FTE models with less KMs. They're cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, loads of power and sound awesome. Plus, if you find a nice LX470, it's literally the same car with a nicer interior, for even LESS money because it doesn't have a Toyota badge. The US market only got the 2UZ LC100 and LX470, and it's a very highly regarded platform over there even still today. The iron block v8 goes forever.

For under 10k, the 2004 - 2010 Volkswagen Touareg is easily the best bang for your buck. With a decent set of tyres, you'd be surprised at how far you can push one off road. Engine options in this price range include ; VR32/VR36 petrol, i5 diesel (only engine option ever offered with a factory manual transmission in these), V6 TDI. For under 20k, again, 2004 - 2010 Volkswagen Touareg. For this price range, you will find some models with factory air suspension, and if you are lucky, a very rare model with a factory locking rear differential. Engine options in this range include all from the previous price range, plus a V8 petrol and diesel, V10 TDI.
