With a young family camped n lived out of it for 6 weeks doing a Kimberley trip, we camp and live out of it towing the 4.5m polcraft boat to the NT billabongs over the last 5 years. Bought it for 10k have now spent 5k doing suspension, exhaust and wheel upgrades. Could sell for 20k every day up here. Only had 210k on it when I bought it now about 250k. I love my girl. Will upload pics once I fit my flares. New upgraded touch screen headunit and sound system!

Earlier this year I was at the auctions in Perth bidding on a Ford Everest that ended up way out of my price range. I saw an ex Metronet 2019 Holden Colorado LT with canopy, drawers and canvas seat covers. 130,000km and never been offroad. Picked it up for $22,500 and have never looked back. Great car on and off the road, and left me some $ for a few choice upgrades.

For a bargin, i picked up a GU Series 4 ZD30 wagon with a fresh paint job for 7k. The engine died a few months after buying it, so i bought a written off cracked chassis TD42TI ute for 5k with 140,000km on it, i swapped the TD into the wagon over a weekend with some mayes. I now have a TD42TI GU Wagon with mint paint and nice interior for $13,000. Probably one of the cheapest TD Wagons getting around.

Don't overlook a well set up td42 GU. They can be had now for sub 30-20k and the td42 (well maintained) will push well over 700 thou km.. Don't buy into the kettle drama. It's no where near as common as people make it out to be. I went from a stock td42 GU to one with bigger turbo and pump (without pushing too hard) and it drives like a dream - literally as comfortable as any newer 4wd and pulls like a train but with the added advantage of being easy to work on, sounds awesome and will go anywhere.

I could buy anything right now like a 200/79/300 etc, but this will cost me around $6-8K all up, and will get me and boat etc from A to B, for a fraction of cost of new vehicle. Sure once it has done it's life, I will sell etc.....but it is a great vehicle for everything except tohe most extreme tracks!

It had dangerously NO power on the test drive, been keyed down one side so I don't need to be shy off road and a couple the usual wear and tear items need doing like wheel alignment and front rotors. No blow by at the oil cap and mostly good overall otherwise. I cleaned the MAF sensor and all the power came back. $12500 was a bargain for me. They're out there if you want to find them.

A bit of a pinch about the Ranger however those are fair reasons for why to avoid. Really it comes down to which PX model you want and the application in mind. You wouldn’t try and get a PX3 and flog it on tracks, or has over 300ks on the clock, but also you don’t want to get a PX1 that’s done less than 300ks. I got my PX2 late ‘16 manufactured (DPF) for around 38k during Covid, but if you can find a earlier PX2 (early ‘15 to early ‘16 manufacturing) that’s done about that 250-300ks for around $18-22k it’s a sweet spot as by then they sorted the engine issue to a decent reliability, and as long as the owners have replaced the injectors and most major recalls and seals, you got yourself a pretty good deal of a daily tourer/daily weekender.

In that case, you blew up the single most reliable thing landrover ever built. Blowing up an LT230 is entirely on you/previous owners who have neglected it. US offroad racers love to divorce them and put them behind cummins/LT/LS etc, they're extremely reliable and will easily take what a TD5 would output. The rest of the D2 is a bit of a tub of lard tho imo

But wondering if anyone in the comments would know to keep the tb42 as is rn it has 520k km so I don’t slap a turbo on it if it’s tired or will it take the boost fine if it’s low psi? Or do I keep stock engine wise and save until I can afford a td42 turbo setup?
@markthomas87662 сағат бұрын
A custom set of extractors is MUCH better value that a turbo! Go to 3 inch and let it breath! 3 inch all the way through. If it has a lot of rust either turn it into a space cab an put a tray on the back (coil trays are awesome); needs engineering. Do ALL the proper services and replace the injectors , all filters, all oils. Replace and service all bearings and diffs. The GU and GQ were built for MILITARY applications. Just ask the UN. After the 4.2 was no longer available, the UN went back to Toyota. Their second choice.
