When he says the torque figures are exageratted due to the torque converter, he is not describing it accurately. The torque figures at the wheel are accurate and real at the wheels. The torque converter actually does increase the useable torque at the wheels, which is what actually matters. It may give confising results if you're trying to compare flywheel torque by measuring wheel torque, but when you're driving, wheel torque is all that matters.

only reason why big tyres speed things up is tread. reality you have less torque. more revs at the tyre and less on the motor overall. stock tyres have less revs and more torque as more revs from the motor. whole reason why people lower gear 4wds to get the torque curve etc better offroad, especially low down on bigger tyres. my point is that yeah bigger tyres will have something better in the end of the rev range going downhill. but getting up and go will suffer with larger tyres and stock gearing.

As someone from the US, I have to say those two trucks look mighty sharp and if I were able, wouldn't mind either one. Though the turbo 4 might be more of the work truck than the weekender for me, but there is something about a nice v8 that gives that ample power without really needing to strain hard that delivers surprisingly excellent mileage.
@MadRS7 ай бұрын
Sorry Jocko but I do have to pull you guys up on something. It's about the down hill decent in a manual. Firstly you should never be using the clutch on a hill decent, Tommy probably just got things confused there. Secondly putting larger tyres on will increase the speed of down hill decents as the rolling diameter is larger thus you will travel a longer distance per revolution of the hub. I'd love to see the 2.8 with an Auto Chiller installed.
@cyclemoto87447 ай бұрын
I too was confused about their comments at that point of the video. I thought they may have been referring to the auto when stating that 1st gear was too fast and larger tires are better to go slower. I only have 33 on my 76 manual and the ratio is still slower than any vehicle I've owned.

There are thousands upon thousands of very high mileage 1GD Hilux and Hiace out there in Asia in particular, also Aus. The motor is proven FFS, its not as if this is a new experiment now that its turned up in the Cruiser! Jeez, its even used in the Hino 200 trucks and Coaster buses! All this talk about how the 4-cyl will wear out blah blah, its just baloney. Toyota know what they’re doing, they’re not gonna go and screw the Land Cruiser reputation just for kicks. There was a time when the roar of a V8 engine was more than just noise-it was a symphony, a heartbeat, a thrill that coursed through every vein. Every time you turned the key, there was a rush, a deep rumble that seemed to echo through your soul. It wasn't just about speed; it was about freedom, about the open road stretching out before you like an endless promise. But time has a way of changing things, of softening the edges of what once was. The world started talking about efficiency, about the future, and the once-mighty V8 was quietly replaced by something more sensible, more economical-a 4-cylinder that, while reliable, never quite filled the void. At first, it seemed like a wise decision. The fuel gauge moved slower, the emissions were lower, and the world seemed a little more in tune with progress. But as the years slipped by, something else happened. The memories of that V8 started to creep back, not in loud, boisterous ways, but in soft whispers of nostalgia. You'd hear it in the faint rumble of a passing car, or in the way the wind whistled through the trees on a quiet evening. It was there in the smell of gasoline, in the sight of an open road on a summer day. And each time, it tugged at something deep inside, something that the 4-cylinder could never quite touch. The 4-cylinder was practical, yes, but it lacked the soul, the character, the raw, unfiltered joy that the V8 had brought. The memories of that V8 became like snapshots from a childhood long past-moments of pure, unadulterated happiness that could never be recaptured, only remembered. And so, as time went on, you found yourself missing that V8, not just for what it was, but for what it represented-a time when life was simpler, when the world felt bigger, and when every drive was an adventure. It became a bittersweet longing, a reminder that some things, once gone, can never be replaced. The V8 was more than just an engine-it was a piece of your heart, left behind on the open road.

Something I’d like to hear the Aussie perspective on, in the US the trend is the same. Toyota and all manufacturers are ditching the big naturally aspirated V8s and everything is smaller displacement twin turbo V6 and turbo 4cyl. There’s no doubt they make more power and tow better. But the big concern is longevity. How long will these smaller engines last with much higher compression and cramming a lot of boost through them? We all know the naturally aspirated V8s last a lifetime with minimal maintenance.
@dunxy7 ай бұрын
They don't care as long as most outlive warranty period. Its bs emission's requirements as well, not just the manufacturers fault. The old 4.2 six was better again, but emission's killed it...

I've tested both vehicles and read extensively on the topic. With an engineering degree, practical skills, and over 10 years of professional driving experience, my choice was the V8. The V8 is designed for enthusiasts and pro who prioritise performance. It's suited for those who appreciate the nuances of manual driving, including gear shifting and clutch usage, rather than just comfort. If comfort and ease of use are your main criteria, perhaps a Hilux would be more suitable. For those seeking a durable, reliable off-road vehicle, the V8 is unmatched. Do you need more power and torque? It's as easy as $1.5-2k and you get almost doubled over 4 cyl. As for the popularity of the 2.8, I'm puzzled.

Remember one thing , the v8 runs on 0.8 psi boost , the 2.8 gd6 runs at 27psi boost , the stress levels on these motors are very different , remember , you can build a 1000 hp on the rear wheels chevy LS 6 v8 but how long will it last but you can buy a std Chevy LS6 v8 that puts out 289 hp on the rear wheels , the difference is the 1000 hp motor may last 10000 miles before needing a rebuild but proberably a lot sooner , a LS6 stock motor will last a minimum of 300000 miles but as much as 600000 miles in a chev corvette , a sports car that is going to work hard for its money , the gd6 is a lot more like the 1000hp motor than the v8 which I know of examples that have over 1500000 kms on the clock , I have yet to see a gd6 with much more than 450000km on it .

Ronny Dahl has already tested his worked V8 against a factory 2.8. 2.8 smashed it. 2.8 used less diesel towing a big van than the V8 used not towing. V8 could only hold 80kph up steep hill. 2.8 held 100 up same hill.

Cmon guys if you are going to tow a decent size van make sure the bloody thing is level you have always said towing requires the damn things are level to be safe that van is fairly front heavy and the front wheels on that dual axle are taking a fair bit of weight as for the rest of it not bad

I’d want the v8, but I live in the USA and cannot have a diesel v8 Toyota because Toyota is mean it it’s biggest client. My 1gr-Fe 4 runner has 343,000 miles with no problems just maintenance so I cannot really complain. I’m going to buy a v8 Tundra in the next couple of weeks but keep the 2005 4Runner and turn it into a modest weekend overlander for here in North Carolina, thanks for the video it was very informative.

I sold my 2.8 hilux for the glx 23 V8 much better truck At bit more noise, a lot tuffer, tows easy, slower yes, but at least i dont get the embracing plums of smoke from the DPF every other day Lot easier to mod and customise Better suspension YES! i love hearing the complaints about the gaurds. That system has been in cars since around 2010ish. The tall soft brackets are designed to cushion the initial impact to a pedestrian should they be unfortunate enough to land on the car in the event of an accident.

Great testing , best so far A few questions 1.Where does tuning leave the oem warranty 2.Does it still meet emissions, i would of thought this would be regarded as tampering as you are changing the calibration from the OEM 3. Wouldn't you look at increasing the line pressure in the auto to help cope with the additional power

Thanks for the video. The four is a good engine. Although. One would need two of those screaming four cylinder jobs on each wheel to equal a V8. The reverse side of the coin is 3 - 4 litres of fuel better off per 100km. Also. Where the going gets tough. A manual are oceans ahead in reliability. Each one has their own application.
@Tk-ou9ec7 ай бұрын
I read that the 4 bangers get around 14 litres per 100 kilometres! So still quite thirsty. I wonder how thirsty the V8 model is?

I can comment re 2024 V8 78 series. Was about 11L/100km on the highway drive home from the dealer. Sits just over 12 now with bar, spots, roof platform and some awnings up there plus weight from drawers in the back. Just over 13 pretty loaded up (and roof space utilised) for a 2 week road trip.

Jocko - bigger tires will not help gears that are too tall. If you need a lot of clutch because you are struggling for torque you need smaller tires or shorter gears (or more power). Taller tires will have that clutch working even harder buddy!

First time I’ve heard a complaint the gearing is too tall in low range 1st gear for the V8 and had too over work the clutch? I think it was driver not familiar enough to trust it. And bigger tyres would make it worse not better lads. The 2.8 if you want to drive it stock. (That’s me) Turning that up higher than factory is asking for trouble . The V8 if you don’t mind paying + 6k to Toyota and another 10k+ to the aftermarket for clutch, exhaust and tunes.
@marktonner97137 ай бұрын
They should keep both the v8 & 4cyl. Different models for different uses. What I would like to see is Toyota put a solid axle front-end back in the hilux, coil sprung all round this time, make it a specialized 4x4 model(get rid of the rogue/rugged), keep the ifs model for those who use it more on road.
