Clay, I am a carpet cleaner and know the value vacuuming a carpet before cleaning in order to remove the maximum dry soil before wetting the carpet. This is an informative video, well done. Great consumer education.

Rubicon Outdoors yes you can make a great living cleaning carpets if you are fair and provide good service! Carpet cleaner here in New Jersey. Educations, equipment, chemistry, and good customer service and you will be golden. There are a lot of splash and dash carpet “cleaners” that give us a bad name.

Bought a Kirby years ago because it was worth the extra money to get a METAL one. Awhile later while vaccuming, it sucked up a small flat-head screw which got stuck by the metal fan and broke off a fin. Machine didn't work. Took it to a Kirby dealer, 3 weeks later still waiting on parts. I finally got it back at the end of the 4th week and to my surprise it wasn't covered under the lifetime warranty and the replacement fan was now plastic because so many fans had to be replaced for this reason. The salesman sold me a lifetime warranty but it was a sales pitch only. Learned my lesson. Never a Kirby or Royal again. I'll stick to Dyson or Shark.

This is very good and infomercial video. Biggest flaw in those vacuums with the hose is the inlet. It is like what they were thinking designing it that way. Also airflow have to go through the long narrow hose doesn't help things either. Inlet in the center, smooth large air channel to the center and chevron brush roll to guide everything to the center would help alot. My Miele powerhead has all these things what help it perform better than those with the flawed design. And yes I know that it can't compete with the Royal or any other direct air vacuum.

We do exist and we offer high quality and better cleaning vacuums than you can buy at your local Mega Mart. We also can service the vacuums we sell. All too often the major brands spend all of their money on advertising and skimp on the quality and performance. We like to call those Mcvacuuums. While its true that McDonalds sells more hamburgers than anyone else, it's certainly arguable that they don't make the best Burger. Chances are the Bar & Grill down the street have a much better burger and better service. Just because it's well known and conveniently located doesn't mean it's the best product on the market. Most Vacuums today are disposable 3-5 year vacuums that don't clean all that well and just wind up in a landfill. Thank you for your compliments on our video and next time your in the market for a long term, good quality and better cleaning vacuum, check out your local dealer.

Remember, there are varying degrees of commercial vacuums on the market. This is a great video about how vacuums work. Sort of reminds me of the difference between my older Eureka ESP and my mom's ten year old Oreck. The Oreck is direct air like my Eureka but it doesn't have nearly the agitation since mine has the Vibra Groomer II metal beater bar vs a wooden roller brush. The Eureka also seems to have better airflow from it's design and it has a lot more suction from it's 7 amp motor. Orecks are about 4 amps. I like the bypass demo in this video, that's a huge difference. Shame Eureka doesn't stick to their roots, their old vacuums were some of the best out there.

They think the cheap $40 plastic vacuums are great because they can pick them up with their pinky but in the end the landfills are full of them because they just don't last like the heavier built to last vacuums LOL. I keep my eyes out for a Kirby or Royal as I'd like to get another one. My grandmother's 1961 Kirby finally died last year, the motor finally gave up.

great demo, would be interesting to see a video where the royal is compared to a modern Dyson such as the DC40(2015), they are far better than the 1 in the video. Agitation on the dc40(2015) is superb, it bounces all the dirt and draws it into the head like the royal was doing in the video, also when you recline the Dc40(2015), the airflow goes straight into the cleaner head rather than going through a hose. The older Dyson's wasn't half as good as the modern ones are. Don't know what the Dyson dc40(2015) is like in the usa but here in the UK its brilliant.

Bought a Royal metal with brush stiffener & attachment kit in 1992. It's used weekly in a 1800 sf home. I wax it once a year, lubricate it every few years and it still looks and works like new. When pulling up the old wool/horsehair carpet there was no dust in the air. The Royal cleans below the surface. Only vac I've used that pulls sand from carpet and picks up kleenex, store receipts, luan ply chips, fluorescent lamp glass and moist plaster flakes (!) effortlessly. Pet hair? No problem.

its so nice to see people talking about airflow finally thank god here in the uk there is a now a ban on over powered vacuums no more 2000 watt vacuums i just wish people would realise that the 2000 watt vacuums dont pick up any more really than an old 600 watt vacuum people went mad buying up the really high power vacuums before the ban came in i mean come on look at how much dirt a kirby can pull up compared to a 2000 watt miele i agree with you about direct air vacuums the good old fashioned british hoover junior sucks up all the pet hair and carpet freshner in my house ( we have 6 cats and a dog and i vacuum 3 or 4 times a day) i really wish the royal uprights were more available in this country i had one many many years ago and gave it to someone who was rebuilding their house because of the brick dust she used to kil a vacuumevery 3 months she went through many hoover turbopower uprights and many panasonics before i gave the royal to her the royal lasted her many years and coped really well with the brick dust

True "old-school" uprights like these (Royal/Kirby) have always been the best performers, as were Hoover Convertibles of the 50's/60's. The problem was the use of above-floor attachments; they were either hard to convert to or they had poor suction. Hence the crappy vacuums of today with the on-board hoses.

I used to sell Kirby's and with their sales training I learned how to sell ice to eskimos. I didn't like the shady sales tactics and I didn't feel like I was giving people a good value for their money, so I quit that job. Kirby vac's used to be built like tanks, but it seems that with every new model that it has less metal parts swapped out with plastic. For them it appears profit is more important than quality.

Great video Clay! I learned a lot. I desperately need to get a new vacuum that works well on dog hair- specifically straight dog hair that is between 1-2" long. It tends to work its way into carpet and furniture fibers more than wavy dog hair. I also have 2 teens. My floors are a mix of hardwood, a large 8'x11' rug, and carpet (stairs, bedrooms). I have a Miele upright which works well on the hardwood but it pulls up too much on the rug making it is too difficult to move around. I also need something with attachments to vacuum my furniture and stairs. I'd also prefer one vacuum for all, if possible, and not to switch between the Miele for hardwood and another for rugs/carpet. On a local community FB page I put the request out for recommendations from pet owners for favored vacuums. The most recommended was the Shark Pro and then one person said they had and loved the Sanitaire, which I had not heard of, but I've since looked up. I see you referred to the Royal which my parents had when I was growing up. Sounds like the Sanitaire ranks up there with the Royal, agree? Thoughts on the Shark Rotator? Thoughts on finding a Royal quality vacuum with attachments?

My parents used to have both an Electrolux canister and an Upright Kirby. I know that Royal is one of the best, but so are Electrolux and Kirby. My parent's Electrolux--back in the 60's, could suck up a sock with the greatest of ease, and it was built like a tank. I would never buy a plastic vacuum cleaner. I would buy any of the three I mentioned above--as long as they are made of metal.

I have owned Kirby and Royal but preferred my 20 year old Electrolux "Lux4000" for the convenience of board tools used with the detachable hose. The direct air (Kirby/Royal) required occasionally replacing a rubber drive belt for the agitator which could be difficult. The hose on the Lux4000 allows easy edge cleaning and can get into small spaces and above floor as well. Though a hose (and sling) could be attached to the others, it was just not convenient and required much more time and effort. I have used baggless vacuums like Dyson but prefer the bagged models which are much less messy. I am shopping for my first vacuum after 20 years because the LUX4000 no longer turns on. I see Proteam makes something similar but am not certain if it will have the same quality as my Electrolux. Hose models need to have few bends and be easy to clear if clogged. Also a separate motor for the beater with the switch located on the handle.

electrolux lad LOL, same goes for the dirt you dump in the garbage out of a baggless system, or throw a bag in the trash from a bagged vacuum. I'd rather dump the water out, not to mention the Rainbow's system is far superior to any other HEPA system out there. The rainbow traps all allergens in the water so they cannot remain airborne.
@NickWilkes5166
@NickWilkes5166 9 жыл бұрын
electrolux lad Actually that makes it very useful because "Wet dirt can't fly". Once the dust and debris is in the water, it can't escape. And if for some odd reason that dust does escape the newer rainbows have HEPA filters. William Todd the newer Rainbows do have powered brush rolls :)

With the hose you have some restriction in suction due to the hose designs, but its not as bad as having the suction on one side of the nozzle or the other like many of the new vacuum designs have. I think a lot of it has to do with cost cutting to make the vacuums cheaper so they just do what is cheapest and throw the hose on the side and call it a day LOL.

It uses the AH20065 belt. The vacuums typically don't come with extra belts. We have them in stock.

Can't speak to the new Royal Vacs but my mother has both a Royal upright and a Royal Canister, Circa 1975. I've tested them out and blow away all the new vacuums. Not only that, they STILL WORK at that level! Just ran a search, because I'm tired of the absolute GARBAGE being sold for vacuum cleaners.

I have three questions. First, how does the Royal Everlast series compare in both airflow and agitation to the Tristar (let's go with MG3 for specifics)? Secondly, I know that too much agitation can eventually start tearing out carpet fibers--how does the Royal perform in that respect (I heard that Riccars can definitely start tearing up carpets). Thirdly, do you know if the new LG Kompressor series (upright or canister) have good agitation?

I guarantee that people won't buy that Royal over the Dyson because of the way it looks. It doesn't look 'sleek and futuristic" it looks "old and heavy." Unfortunately, that's what our society has become. We care far more about how things look or sound over how they actually work. People today are just stupid. That Dyson could never stand up to any type of commercial use that most of those Royal, Kirby, Sanitaires, etc. can. Even though the store sells Dyson, there's no way they could deny that.

I agree with you. People do care about how their vacuums look. I don't really like how the new vacuums look.I like how the older vacuums look and how Kirby,sanitaire, and royal are the only one that still make the older design of vacuums.
@mhtube01

+Russell Low Yeah I don't like the look of new vacuums either, they all look cheap and overly complicated. You're right, those are the only companies who still make the tried and true direct air design. Some other companies make direct air vacs but the motors are smaller and they just don't work as well. Vacuums shouldn't be complicated machines, the old design is simple but works extremely well.

+mhtube01 yup I have all three brand Kirby,sanitaire, and Royal vacuums and the are amazing. My aunt owns one of those shark lift away vacuum but had to take it to the repair shop once and I let her use my sanitaire and she loved it and now she might buy one. Riccar make direct air systems too and I heard that they are really good vacuums but I don't own one so I don't really know.
@mhtube01

Yeah I hear good things about Riccar too. The Radiance is a nice vacuum and has a direct air motor and a bypass motor in one vacuum which is cool so it works well on carpets and has tools. It's an expensive vacuum but looks like it's good quality. People even say the Supralites are great for how light they are and have more power than Orecks do and much better agitation.

+mhtube01 that's cool I look up radiance right now and they are cool. I believe that they call that kind of a system tandem air. I might go down to my vacuum shop and check one out.

You forgot to tell people that that "agitation" by the Royal bounces dirt and dust particles into the air and that the heavy brush action that causes that agitation also wears out and damages their carpets a lot faster. There's also the continuous cost of buying bags and the loss of suction and airflow from the instant you start vacuuming and the inside of the bag is coated with minute dust particles. Bagged vacuums are just ancient technology that never worked very well from the very beginning. How old was that Dyson? Was it packed full of hair and lint? I know my DC17 Animal Dyson would pick that up with minimal effort just like the Royal AND I still have the detachable hose to use in places and on things you can't reach with the Royal. Thanks for the video, but no thanks, I'll keep my Dyson.

Trojan Horse 86 lol even with a full bag on a royal it will out clean your empty Dyson and that powerful agitation is what saves your carpet by pulling the sand out that actually grinds away at the carpet, and the bouncing allergies into the air is not true, the airflow is so strong on my royals that it will pull dirt into the vac that isn't even near the head of the vacuum

Respect from a Kirby guy. Kirby is the whole home care system with the best airflow/agitation/suction but you can’t sell the new from your store, and royal is the next best. Although it has not shampooing ability or canister attachments that I know of, it is the next best and you could sell other machines at a better margin, but you obviously care more about quality. Thank you sir.

I feel like you are probably making a huge generalization about bypass cleaners. There are probably many bypass type cleaners that have the hose either connect directly to the center of the suction section, or they have the air flow routed to the center. Is this not true? If it is true, then the suction would as uniform as the direct type, correct?
@fentonsewnvac

kirby is a direct air vacuum and cleans very well. The differance is that the Royal is lighter and less expensive. The Royal is also better quality, more metal parts like the fan, switch and cord release just to name a few.
