RS magazine is one of most shittiest & bullshits magazine that human kind has ever created.... Comparing Clapton with the extraterrestrial Mark Knopfler, is like saying that Justin shitty Biaber, is better vocally than Elvis Presley .... MK is so bloody obviously some thousands light years ahead any biological creature that has walked, walks and shall walk for the next 1999 years, as far as all the musical components are concerned; lyrics of masterpiece level, an anthology of English language itself, only the Telegraph Road, is more than enough to verify this, the virtuosity in music writing and guitar playing are simply unrivaled by no human, and the band's career... it looks so ridiculous to compare The Cream (EC band) with Dire Straits and their impact's size in the infinite Empire of the art form called music. Full stop.
@Itzsfo04 жыл бұрын
Eh prefer Dylan's acoustic version is more haunting Lol at comparing guitarists lt doesn't matter your opinion is just an opinion. Mark is just another guitarist and I could careless about virtuosity douchebags who idolize guitarists use that word to show their fanboy Music is personal opinion no need to type some long winded fanboy worship of some dude who is just another guitarist. Electric guitar doesnt do this track justice, and his writing isnt all that spectacular I've heard better.

Summer of 1976, Binghamton NY, the opening act for Bob Dylan and the backup band were some guys called the Knopfler Brothers. The Brothers opened for about 45 minutes. Then Dylan came out and joined them for about an hour. Dylan never plays very long. After Dylan did his encore "Hurricane Carter." The Knopfler brothers came back out and said we would like to play a little longer. They played till f'ing 2:00 am the next day and closed with "Knocking on Heavens Door." The second time that night and the better version. The first of few times I got to see what became Dire Straits. Man that song will be stuck in my head. Go watch the Grateful Dead's version. They too were a Dylan back up band about that time.

Many thanks to the person who posted this version - I discovered Sir Mark Knopfler, OBE, through this posting. I was young adult living in San Francisco during the Hippie/Rock Music era but never listened to Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" - knew they were a top selling rock group, but never knew anything about the members of the group or their big hit. Now love listening to the original version and Mark and Emmy Lou Harris's duets. Hard to believe he wasn't more well known in the US then - think the Beatles and the Rolling Stones got the most attention then.

Mr. Benton hit the nail on the head! I think the correct way to put what makes MK so unique and in a whole different class and makes his playing so supirior to anyone else is not the technique (althogh the sultan's solo was clearly groung breaking) but rather that Mark makes his guitar sing!! Clapton paved the way but MK takes it to a whole new level... Throughout all the DS songs his guitar is singing a gorgeous second voice to him that often is a whole new seperate tune that meshes in so perfectly....(very pronounced on communique) and the solos are a duet to his singing - Maybe being a true musician is what makes the magic and sets him apart from all other guitarist who are just that. He turns the guitar from a guitar (that many play so incredibly well) into a real musical instrument that produces amazing music..... Similar to what Steve Gadd can do with a drum kit... Did anyone say best guitarist ever.....?
