I'm a fairly new prepper. On a tight budget. Thank you for this video, it looks like I've found a solid compass to invest in, within my budget. I love your channel, it's down to earth, straight forward and serious prepping advice.

Just ordered the suunto clip on after watching this. I got a job as a land surveyor 6 months ago and I want something to make life a little easier for finding my bearing real quick or running the gps units. Thanks for a good review and I can’t wait to test it out I had no idea what to look for until I saw this.

black scout resco watch is a really nice watch. You see people all the time flossing with their tag heuer watches the omega speedmaster rolex watches, if you got the money to buy an expansive watch then it's refreshing to see someone choose a black scout resco instead. Absolutely understated nobody would mistake it for a $2,000 watch unless you know the brand. As for me I am more of a casio watch kind of guy.

Brunton does as well but Amazon reviews indicate QA problems. Gerber / BG also but theirs looks to be a cheapie plugged into a plastic holder. Numerous others but greater than 1" diameter.

If your watch is made of any magnetic metal it will affect the compass (some metals are not magnetic).

Ironically enough, people put a compass next to their automatic watch to see if it's magnetized.

Do you ever carry a lensatic compass like the Cammenga H3. I took an Orienteering course and the instructor told me it wasn’t good for land navigation which made no sense to me.

Please tell me how your Suunto has made it this long. I bought one from REI and after about two hours of playing with the bezel, half of it would freely spin. No positive clicks. Really bummed and want to give it a second shot. It'd be great if they made a beefier version. But the biggest thing is how much my stainless steel Swiss Army watch affects it. How do people wear these on watch bands?

I have one of the Wazoo Survival Gear clam shell compasses. It's just a basic compass but the inside of the lid illuminates at a surprizing level from 30 seconds of flashlight beam. It also has a reflective panel on the underside for signaling. I think it was $20. I am seriously considering getting ine of the Suunto clip ons. I put it on my Amazon wish list. I like that I could slide that on to a hatband or the bill of a ball cap.

I really like the Prometheus design werx compass. I like the suunto too, but I've had the directional ring fall off and have the compass fall out. I just throw the suunto on a pack now since it sees less daily wear and use the PDW on my watch band.

I was on the verge of buying a genuine Sunnto button watch compass on Amazon for $28.00 Cad, but then I read the multiple reviews of how many people loss the compass, while leaving the clip housing still in place, apparently the epoxy thet keeps the compass fastened to the holder lets go around the six month mark. What are your views on this? This is bad news for me as I would be using this compass in very cold weather, I do a lot of remote frozen lake, exploratory ice fishing with my snowmobile, miles away from any help, and wanted a quality back up compass..... If only quality manufacturers like Sunnto and other survival gear companies could stop making their products in China, that would be nice, quality control there is a joke, even if the company is ISO certified.

Great review (y). Button compasses are under-rated and good ones are hard to find. And you're right to carry at least two. Sometimes they flip direction and you need another to verify. Maybe you should carry three?
@COYG18867 жыл бұрын
Geoff Lee CountyComm has a few. No issues with them so far.
@bossybill74377 жыл бұрын
No worries. I'm not sure how the poles flip but 'they' say not to store your compass near any other strong magnets, like speakers. Another thing to watch out for, when reading a compass, are strong 'magnetic anomalies'. Typically magnetite or similar high iron concentration, mineralized patches and areas of ground. The effect is similar to standing too close to a vehicle. If uncertain, move a few 10s of meters away or until the ground/soil type changes. And... if sighting, when holding the compass up close to your face, watch out for your spectacles. Often these effects are minimal but it is always best to verify any reading against the sun, landmarks, your instincts, etc. Here in Australia, I've experienced compass readings 15-20 degrees off due to ground mineralization.

I think after watching this that each of these compasses have their pros and cons the main thing is that as long as they work it doesn't; matter how much they cost it's what your comfortable paying, like the watch very much if I bought one I would be heading for the divorce court.

As to your slur of calling a girly boy all I can say is that your lack of good manners is preceded only by your dim wit. It’s always easy to insult someone you’re not standing toe-to-toe with. My comment was meant purely as a joke directed to the videographer, not to you. I enjoy this KZbin channel tremendously and a little levity isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
